I drew many of the next few strips when Pewfell first ran as daily strip on the web way way back in the halcyon days of webcomics (2002). This one is kind of simple and not all that well drawn, but I still like it in a goofy kind of way.
Ah Bish, ya gotta love him, always up to some crackpot activity or another. He's my favorite character to write, as he pretty much always seems to just write himself. He's also based on a friend of mine from the same village in England, Ol West, who later went on to become brand manager for Budweiser in the UK. Again, it's more just the look of him, rather than anything to do with his personality, although Ol does have something of Bish's noble spirit about him. At the end of the day, I have found that all the characters in my comic, though frequently based on other people at the outset, end up really just being different aspects of my own personality. Make of that what you will...
By the way, bonus points if you spotted that the fourth panel of this strip is after Rogier van der Weyden's "St. George and the Dragon" c. 1432 in The National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, USA. I always though those dragons in the classical St. George paintings were rather too puny, and flet that they must have larger relatives lurking around somewhere.

Did I mention that Tina the Warrior Princess is based on my wife Tina? I used to think it was a bit strange that I was writing a comic strip about my wife being married to someone who looks like my friend, but now that Adam Prosser does all the writing I hardly lie awake worrying about it at all anymore.

Another Pewfell strip from the way-way back machine. It's kind of weird running these old ones, when my style and sense of what makes a good strip have evolved so much over the years. Still, I think they are necessary to properly introduce the characters, and they hold up well enough in their own right. They are the first little shoots that the later strip developed out of and they are best read in that context.

Another entry in the series of verrry early Pewfelll Strips, appearing on the web for the very first time. Originally drawn in 1995. This strip and the next one were actually written for me by my friend Guy Parker. Guy is now 'Director of Copy Advice' at the Advertising Standards Authority in London. So if you don't like his copy, you know where to send the advice.
Guy actually came up with the name Pewfell Porfingles for a wizard character he played in a D&D game we played together, so I've really been ripping him off all these years. He keeps threatening to come after me for royalties, but I hope he's not counting on that for his retirement fund!

In this strip I thought I'd try to address why Bish speaks the way he does. The real reason is because I think it's fun to write that way, although it does take up a lot of space and I can't make every speech balloon this big.
In case you were wondering I was born and raised in Basingstoke, England and speak with a very English accent. Pewfell speaks with what I usually call a mid-Atlantic sort of accent. Now I think about it, I guess that might mean he's Canadian?! My co-writer Adam Prosser is, in fact, Canadian so I guess that proves it. I never thought about that before. I've never been to Canada, perhaps now I should. |

I would like to point out that this is only a semi-autobiographical comic strip. As a self-employed artist I make a somewhat better living than Pewfell does -- mostly because I'm not quite as lazy as he is (though I would like to be!). My wife is in fact called Tina -- she's not a warrior princess, but she is a Viking and has been known to wear a horned helmet on occasion (though never to work).

Pewfell the wizard and his wife Tina the Warrior Princess have had their Satyrday morning lie-in disturbed by a string of unwanted intrusions, culminating in the destruction of their bed by a libidinous demon.
This cross-section of Pewfell house was a lot of fun to do. Someone in Eastern Europe once called me up to ask if he could build a life-sized version of the house, based on the plans I have posted here:

This first story was conceived and written quite recently by Adam Prosser, my erstwhile co-conspirator on the project. Adam didn’t actually get on board until somewhere early on in Volume 4, but he has contributed many strips to this newly revised version of Volume 1.

Pewfell, the epic fantasy sitcom, begins its new run TODAY, with the REDUX edition of Volume 1. If you've not followed the series before, this would be the ideal time to jump in. If you have, then get ready because this new version is greatly expanded and re-edited with tons of brand-new, never-before seen and restored material, all in full color.
This revised edition of Pewfell Volume 1 is a project I've wanted to work on for a long time, because I've increasingly felt that the series didn't have had the introduction it deserved. I've been drawing Pewfell on and off for around 15 years now. Early on, the strip had several false starts as I experimented with form and format. I drew the first Pewfell material in the days before the interweb, and put it out in black & white photocopied 'zines. When the web came along I tried out various different layouts and update schedules before becoming a full daily strip in 2002. Back then, I was just making it up as I went along, with not much of a clue about what I was doing. The beginning never really reflected what the strip eventually developed into. Over time I tried to rectify this by pruning stuff away and lopping off limbs, but this left the series with no real start and no organic introduction to the characters. Most notably, in 2003, Wingnut Games published a 64 page black and white print volume, which required me to drastically cut and reshape the early material, and that has been the ‘official’ Volume 1 ever since.
This ultimate edition restores most of what was lost, as well as adding back in a lot of my earliest material, which never made it onto the web at all. Also, my co-writer, Adam Prosser, and I, with the help of colorist Carla Costa, have created over 20 pages of brand-new strips including this opening story. Volume 1 is now almost twice the length of the earlier print edition and forms the definitive introduction to the series that readers have been asking for.
The strip will be updating 5 days a week and, as often as I can manage, I'll be posting them right here on LiveJournal, along with commentary. Otherwise, visit Pewfell.com to read the full archives for free. Alternatively, Volume 1 will be available as a series of 4 eBooks, each with a brand-new cover, downloadable from DriveThruComics.com. OK, so I've been away for LiveJournal for way too long. Been busy working on a ton of projects. one which has been an upgrade to the first volume of the Pewfell Archive. My co-writer, Adam Prosser, and I have been hard at work writing several new stories, I've ressurected some long retired material from the archives and with the help of colorist Carla Costa have colored it for the first time. We hope this new, expanded edition will provide the perfect entry point to the strip that the series had been lacking for a while now. Startign Monday, I'll be publishing updates 5 days a week for the next couple of months as the new stuff is released. you'll be able to see it all here. in the meantime here is the new cover for Volume 1 Book 1:

We'll as you may or may not have noiticed I've been on vacation for a bit -- just a couple of weeks R&R back in Blighty, but preparations and whatnot made life back in the trenches here all bit hectic, what. Though I have been updating the strip on time, I've not had a moment to post anything here in the jolly old journal for a while. Anyway, I've been playing catchup a bit this week, and have posted 3 delectable new Pewfell episodes for iPod download at http://www.clickwheel.net/features/show/23.
We're at #11 in the Clickwheel charts right now, so are making a push to crack the top10. Help us to go over the top by downloading them now. You'll also be assisting us in reaching our goal of 10,000 downloads before Christmas, which i'm sure all you all you base 10 fans out there will agree is an exciting milestone!
