Random declaration of love Jul. 26th, 2008 @ 08:37 am
You know that your fiance understands your gaming when she comes back from Poland and brings you a six sided dice made out of amber :)

I love her lots and I just wanted that to go on record.

Musicals and the best of dreams... Jul. 17th, 2008 @ 09:24 am
I finally got around to watching Dr Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog and holy hell it's *awesome*. If you haven't seen it being a late adopter like me, it was a web show created by Joss Whedon during the writers strike starring Dr Horrible and his attempt to get the girl and incidentally get into the Evil League of Evil and oh yeah rule the world. Unfortunately he's constantly frustrated by Nathan Fillion playing an asshole super-hero Hammer Man.

Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog of awesomeness!
The final part is up on Friday - go watch!

The other part of this entry is the best of dreams, I saved this for the second part of the entry so that you could read about Dr Horrible and then bugger off if you wanted to, I'm good like that. Now the dream may seem like any ordinary dream but how often is it that you wake up grinning?

I'd dreamt I was in an old hospital with my work colleague X (X looks like a doctor type and is a nice guy), we where frantically going around this hospital trying to find where we where meant to be going as we had an emergency surgical consult and hell we couldn't find the patient. It being a dream of course the hospital was truly bizarre borrowing elements from every victorian building I ever visited, the numerous abandoned buildings I've stood in in the course of work, a shopping mall and my mums old nursery. Anyway we eventually track down the patient (who really is in a victorian style ward) and she chats with us. X flashes her a smile as he talks about the operation he'll have to do (X has genuinely unnerving smiles at times...)and suggests that I find a pair of scrubs as I'll be observing (I've been following him around as I'm new). He thinks that there's a pair in the Nursery (wtf?) so I go and look with a nurse who suggests that the 'red silk shorts and dressing gown top' will be fine. I don them reluctantly and head back to the patient at which point I mention that I look like Mike Tyson in this outfit and we laugh and then I wake up.

I actually woke up half grinning half giggling and for that reason alone it was the best dream ever. Looking at the structure of the dream I also think it's fairly positive as it's obvious that subconciously I see my self as a new professional (albeit a nervous embarrassed one) and that train of thought can only ultimately end in a good place.

Right I suppose I should get up, I have painting to do and a psychic hood to make...

Physio Jul. 10th, 2008 @ 09:42 am
Got back from my first physio appointment a short while ago which was interesting - turns out the main cause of my limp is due to my ankle not having been set correctly during surgery with the result that my foot is about 10 degrees out from where it should rest. It looks like I might well have this limp (to an extent) ad infinitum because of it but I'm feeling okay because I was convinced they hadn't set it correctly and now I'm proven right.

Graduation Day Jul. 7th, 2008 @ 08:37 pm
Last weekend was by any stretch of the imagination an exciting time, it started out with mum and dad meeting up with Lauren and myself before we headed off down to Reading. Now the trip to Reading was fine but driving around Reading is an absolute arse mostly due to a virtual complete lack of decent signage in the town although it must be said that the AA instructions I was using where also a bit rubbish. Eventually though we signed in at the Novotel Reading which is quite pleasant and then had a nice Chinese meal at the Chinese restaurant next to it (which strangely we could look into from our bedroom) before sloping back to the hotel drinking wine and eating crisps and then collapsing into bed.

The next morning saw us up early as we where headed out to the main event and the whole point why we where in Reading - my graduation from the College of Estate Management and my collecting my post-grad diploma in Surveying. We had a pretty hectic morning in the end with a lot of trials and tribulations before finally getting to the University (mum and I got there before it started, dad and lauren got there just afterwards). Still it was all worth it all and I had a nervous and exciting time, getting robed, collecting my diploma, chatting with the president of the RICS and having photos taken.

So there we are I'm glad I'm finished, it was hard and tiring and sometimes my course felt like it would never end. Have a picture to reward yourself for reading my dribble...

More pictures later...

Curse of the Vivid Imagination Jul. 4th, 2008 @ 09:52 am
I have a vivid imagination - usually I take this as an advantage but for those of us who do you'll know that it does mean that you can ave particularly nasty nightmares, last nigt was one such example.

I dreamt that I had 3 thick stemmed plants growing out of my left leg around my ankle, they extended to a length of about 10 cm and ended in something like a big ugly dandelion flower. Understandably horrified I tore one out and was rewarded with about 20 cm of roots which I had felt dragging through the veins and arteries in my leg as it came out, I remember screaming all the time and then I woke up.

In the cold light of day it's obvious what's going on, I'm still trying to get my head around the metal implants in my leg (the number of plants relates closely to the pins and screws) which hold my leg together. I know that's true actually because in my conscious mind I've been struggling a bit - it's all odd, my ankle isn't the same ankle it used to be, they had to take some of the bone away and so the shape has changes and if I run my fingers over it I can feel the metal work.

Still makes me glad I hadn't ever had a boob job, I don't know how I'd have coped with the nightmares about that!

Mentioned in my earlier entry this is the Roman Legionary I've been working on regrettably the terrible Technika camera doesn't do the painting justice at all.

From the front...

From the rear...

And for fun a catgirl I painted a while ago - if you compare her to Jay the Cat you'll find she looks suprisingly similar (minus enormous catgirl norks...)

» On painting
This weekend was fun and if you read Loopback0's LJ you'll know we where watching films for a lot of it as to the rest of the weekend I did a bit of painting.

It occurred to me that one of the things I never show people is my hobby - for a long time I was pretty embarrassed that I would sit down and paint small lead miniatures to relax and well for a long time that was probably okay since I wasn't that great - I mean I was OK but nothing special. Recently at the risk of blowing my own trumpet however I've gotten fairly good at painting so I might post the occasional piccy in the lj in the future. As to what I'm painting at the moment - little diddy 25mm Roman Legionary which is going to be a gift for mum and dad. It's been a fun paint even if it's been a chuffing swine to paint the shield design freehand as it's very complicated.

Otherwise next Saturday I'll be in Reading receiving my Post Grad Diploma which I'm nervous and excited about. The only thing I really have to watch out for is my mum popping with pride...
» Fate and a wee update
I think fate has been keeping an eye on me - yesterday I was wondering around sainsburys with Lauren doing a bit of shopping (as we are both at home atm) and all was going well, the shopping experience was okay and I was in a happy tunefull mood until *twang* - something in my ankle went 'twang' and I screamed. I think that what had happened is tht my seized ankle had unseized a bit but it hurt like heck.

Otherwise though all is going well - I've been playing a lot of Bioshock recently which is an awesomely good awesomely scary game. It's been made even better by the fact I've had lauren acting as co-pilot as she's enjoying the storyline. Otherwise I finally ordered the photographs for my graduation which completes the holy trinity of hotel/gown/photos - I'm looking forwards to the graduation - it's been a long slog to become a surveyor and I really feel I achieved something with it. Now I just need a surveying job, well that's something for later...

» Of Films and Time Travel
Now before I get started I should point out that I am a huge Donnie Darko fan, I remember feeling two things having watched the film, firstly a sort of WTF? feeling and secondly that it was a breath of fresh air with it's intelligent take on time travel, discussion of religion and of course the all important Smirfs conversation. Last night then it was with a quiet hope that I sat down with Lauren and watched Southland Tales, the follow up production to Donnie Darko.

I was a bit nervous about this one as it had had terrible reviews from the critics (although this often means that I'll enjoy the film) and from the public in general with a very small screening in cinemas. And the verdict? Well it wasn't as good as Donnie Darko and I don't think it was as intelligent either - it felt like major parts of it had been dumbed down slightly for the American audience who had previously struggled* to grapple with the themes of Donnie Darko. On the other hand the cinematography was beautiful, the special effects fantastic (theres a scene where on of the characters is standing in front of a mirror and there's a delay in his reflection) and it left me thinking which is what I like in a film. The Rock was suprisingly good as a middle aged man having a mid-life crisis and Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy) was good as a Porn-Star. The film was also very very funny in places (if like me you appreciate a dark humour) and had probably the best soundtrack I've run across in any film for a long time.

Basically if you are prepared to sit through the initial 'what the heck?' of the film and enjoyed Donnie Darko and can follow a convoluted plot then you'll enjoy the film.

*It probably sounds like I have a downer on America and it's populace. That's true in as much as I dislike America as a whole but I know some individually fantastic Yanks (you know who you are), regardless however there are a lot of examples available of media being dumbed down for the American audience whether rightly or wrongly.
» Them thar crutches are breeding!
Today has been a 'busy' day. I say busy because I can't think of the correct word to describe a day that starts with me being woken up by my girlfriend screaming in pain before sojourning to a visit to A&E before reaching this point several hours later where she is dozing upstairs in bed having been sent home.

The crux of the issue is that this morning whilst excitedly getting ready to go to Duxford, Lauren slipped over in the bathroom and came down heavily on her hip which struck the edge of the bath before she finally came to a halt on the floor. She screamed, I woke up, I dialled 999. The first responder got here very quickly before a short while later the ambulance crew arrived (funny thing one of them was the same chap who had responded to my injury). Lauren got a trip in the ambulance, some x-rays and a sort-of diagnosis. The good thing was that she hadn't broken anything - the bad news that she had probably pulled a muscle and just done a bunch of soft tissue damage. Eventually she got released (with her own set of crutches!) and we came home in a taxi which ripped me off...

I'm glad she's home now but I have to wonder, I've been in A&E, Laurens been in A&E and Pyoor's been in A&E. So who's next this year?

» Engagementy news of a sort
This morning I am just shattered, thankfully the cause of my fatigue was a worthy one as yesterday Lauren and I went out hunting engagement rings in Cambridge. We had a fantastic time and saw some beautiful (and expensive!) rings but nothing that really cried out to Lauren 'wear me' unfortunately. I meanwhile found a few but didn't manage to take it further as I was walking around on my crutches and, well, I probably no actually definitely overdid it. We ended up having to stop about 6 times around the course of the trip because I was tired, actually so tired that I thought I might pass out at one point.

Still all in all it was a great day and it is only a matter of time now before we find the rings we want :)

Yesterday was a jolly good day.

I did in no particular order:

Got a refund on the broken wireless adapter for the xbox.
Replaced the magazine I already had with a magazine I didn't have.
Watched the shockingly bad Eurovision Song Contest.
Chatted with Rennie (one of laurens friends who came to visit)
Bought a Belkin Wireless G Gaming Adapater
Got my xbox online!
Got some grips for my crutches so they don't hurt as much.
Drank alcohol and ate curry.

I think personally the big news for me was that I finally managed to get my xbox working online, I even managed to play some games of halo 3 and GTA IV on it today. Curiously of the two Halo IV was *way* more fun and I would recommend the multiplayer side of that game to anyone. So yes give us a shout if you want a game on the xbox, my gamertag is 'Love the Lash' :)

Today I intend to make a sunday dinner. Life is good in a kind of broken leg way.
» Now thats what I call snoring!
Now thats cute :)

As I sit here I have a bunch of tiny snores eminating from Jay. If ever you needed an excuse to get a cat listen to one snore...
» The Agony of the Xbox
So today I finally decided to buy the wireless gaming adapter for the xbox - we've been talking about getting the xbox online for a while and I figured that while I was at home it would be a good time to do it. Having decided to buy the official adapter for xbox and brought it home I eagerly opened it up and plugged it in - to find it didn't work. We tinkered for a while and eventually took it back to the game store who apologised and gave me a new one.

So I took that one home and bloody hell would you believe it that doesn't work either. We tinkered again, lauren read lots of webpages about it and we tinkered some more. Finally frustrated we phoned the support line who eventually pronounced a verdict of 'it's broken'. So now we have to take that one back as well and see if the third one works...

I'm pretty brassed off about this - how difficult can it be to make a piece of (not inexpensive) equipment that actually works!

Any suggestions?
» Good News Everybody!
Good news indeed today for I have had the resin cast off my foot and been told that I can start to put full weight on it again. Huzzah this has been brilliant news as I was very fed up with the cast and had desperately wanted to get it off so I could have one of my luxuries back in life - the humble bath.

The only downside with this is that it's put a time-limit on completing GTA IV of about 2 months although in honesty I expect to have finished it within a week and a half now. It is very very good though even if it's very glitchy.

All in all I'm pretty happy though today :)
» Weekend of tiredness (and fun)
Man I'm tired...

Lauren and I had a busy weekend as it turned out in the end. We started out by going to see Doomsday on Friday at the cinema. I wish I could say it was a fantastically written piece of cinematic excellence that made me weep with joy but frankly I'd be lying. What it actually is is a film which escaped from the 80's and got made in the 00's, still it does star (in no particular order) Mohawks, Fast Cars, Castles, Bob Hoskins, Cute Chicks and Joy Division. I actually quite liked it although as I said to Lauren when I left the cinema I know I shouldn't have. So yes that was a late night on Friday.

Saturday saw us taking it easy apart from picking up a parcel and some magazines - it didn't mean an early night tho' because Good Morning Vietnam was on telly in the evening and I'd never seen it. It is a fantastic film and far better than I expected it to be so that was a pleasant suprise.

Finally yesterday we went to the airshow at Duxford. It was ok I guess, and I should explain why I thought the airshow was just ok. I lived in Mildenhall for a long time and would go to the airshow at RAF Mildenhall every year which was *huge* and completely spoiled me for other airshows. If I step back and ignore that though I would say it was a very good airshow, it's just I've seen better. Lauren as ever was very good in pushing my wheelchair for me when I needed her to although I felt guilty about asking her to. I did end up doing a lot of pushing myself around in the end and as it turned out rather too much since when I got home I could barely use my crutches because my muscles hurt so much. Still a good time was had and I got an Aussie Bush hat from the show which I'd been wanting for a while (no it's not a hat with corks tbh imagine a suede fedora and you get the idea).

So yes I'm very tired and as it transpires so is Jay who's curled up into a small sleepy ball on the sofa next to me. She's very cute :)
» Cat Musings
How bizarre...

Jay as many of you will know is the cat which I adopted from Nikki a while back, now also as many of you will know she usually surfaces pretty early so she can go eat, defecate and hunt (although not all at the same time). Today though bless her she's been extremely tired, Lauren was up and put by 8:30, I finally got up at 9:00 and Jay? Well Jay got up at about 11:50.

Bless her little paws I think she's getting a bit older...
» Cat Post
I don't often write about the smallest member of our family but bless her she's been having a tough time of it at the moment. I am of course writing about Jay the Cat who has unfortunately been the victim of bullying by a very boisterous black cat who lives near us. Now this black cat has a bit of a rep for bullying cats - he broke into a local cat owners house by dismantling their cat flap before terrorising the cat in it's own home (not to mention the humans in there)!

So yes Jay got into a fight with him the other morning and then yesterday evening the black cat wouldn't let Jay into the house at night (Lauren says she thinks the black cat bit Jay) so she's been having a hard time at the moment. So much so that she wouldn't go out this morning and has been sat here next to me having bad dreams.

So when you next see a cat, make a fuss of it and spare a thought for our little one...
» Badness
This morning has not been good. I woke up late because we'd had problems with Jay last night not wanting to come in when we called her and then when I hobbled downstairs I had a couple of unpleasent e-mails to attend to. One to the old boss to say 'no I haven't done that work your asking about' and one to the assessment centre to formally withdraw my job application as theres no way I can make it to southampton and work from 8am to 6pm in a weeks time, I've even received medical advice which boils down to 'don't be stupid'.

I'm also on top of it all feeling pretty low - it's been hard being at home and I think laurens finding it difficult as well at the moment.

*sighs* and contemplates digging out her anti-depressants.
» Broken Leg Viewing
Finally decided to start watching Skins and realise now what I've been missing. It's very god and also a little scary - I'd have to agree with wikipedia and say that the central character definitely shows signs of psychopathy.

Certainly interesting viewing anyway...
