| | content | ] | News, folks!
In February 2009, Malice will be published. And you can win a proof edition, signed and so on if you participate in a competition held on the Crooked Lanes-forum. Chris will ask a "sneeky question" concerning one of his books which you have to answer correctly and on time. The first posters who answer correctly win. :) Link to the Malice-thread: http://orokos.proboards55.com/index.cgi?board=oldies&action=display&thread=293
Good luck, everyone!
"Malice is a book about a comic. A dreadful comic, the subject of many playground rumours, which everyone has heard of but few can claim to have seen. Malice is a comic about a terrifying netherworld ruled over by the sinister Tall Jake. A place where all kinds of horrors wait. A place where children are the prey.
But there's something very strange about Malice. Kids are disappearing, all over England; and they're turning up in the pages of the comic.
Rumour has it, if you call on Tall Jake, if you do the ritual and say the right things, he'll come and take you away. He'll take you to Malice. Once there, you won't get out.
But it's just a rumour, right? Seth and Kady think so. Until their friend Luke starts talking about a strange comic he's reading, and disappears the next day. Now they're forced to follow the trail and find out what happened to their friend. To find out if Malice is real..." (taken from http://www.chriswooding.com) |

The books that will be released 2009 and 2010 will be called
"A Dog of the Union: A Tale of the Ketty Jay" June 2009 "The Ace of Skulls" 2010 (???)
Amazon.co.uk already has a synopsis for Tales of the Ketty Jay:
Frey is the leader of a small and highly dysfunctional band of smugglers, occasional pirates and sometime fraudsters. An inveterate womaniser and rogue, he and his gang make a living on the wrong side of the law, existing on the fringes of the empire, avoiding the attention of the Union Navy. With two ragged fighter craft and a small cargo ship on the verge of falling apart, he and his gang run contraband, rob ships and generally make a nuisance of themselves. So a hot tip on a cargo barque loaded with valuables seems like a great prospect for an easy heist and a fast buck ...right up until, on their opening salvo, the whole thing explodes. Suddenly Frey isn't a nuisance anymore - he's public enemy number 1 with the Union on his tail and contractors hired to take him down. Including his oldest and dealiest rival, Frey's ex-wife. But something about the explosion doesn't make sense. The barque must have been rigged to blow, and Frey's been framed to take the fall. But if he wants to prove it, he's going to have to catch the real culprit - and that means heading into the heart of the Union, and following a trail through the criminal underworld that could ultimately lead to the very top.
It's going to take all his criminal talents to prove he's not a criminal ...
A very promising read. I for one cannot wait a whole year. Uh, whatever are we going to do the whole year 2008?! D: |

Taken from the forum "The Crooked Lanes":
Yes! Finally my new book has a title! Unless it gets changed later. But for the moment at least, the newie adult book is called The Ace Of Skulls, and the series is called Tales of The Ketty Jay. And if that sounds a little more, well, piraty than my usual fare, then you're possibly on the right track... or possibly not
*disappears in a mysterious cloud of sparkling dust*
The original post can be found HERE.
I am really curious about the stories. D: Especially the "Tales of the Ketty Jay" sound so "not like him" that I really want to know what it´s like... XD |

Hello there!
Just a news-like post for those of you who know German or are German:
Poison has been translated into German. It still has the original name and I dunno what quality the translation´s like but let´s just hope that given it is not Bastei Lübbe it´s a good one.

Looks good. :> |

[Jul. 12th, 2007|02:12 pm] |
I was wondering if anybody had a scan or anything of the back cover of this version of The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray?
I would scan it myself but i own the old version of the book (the one with the painting of London and the Chackh'morg) so i don't have it. I'm actually looking for it for fanart puposes, so i have a reference, and for possible icon making purposes. |

Wednesday, January 17, 2007 Let me spin thee a tale. A tale of a group of fierce web-warriors with names like Anna and Vik who, long ago, ran a small forum dedicated to BROKEN SKY. Yea, long did it survive against mighty odds, in the wintry cold of cyberspace, but eventually they ran out of questions about the Dominions to which even I didn't know the answer, and what became of that forum, I know not. Yet now a new seed hath been sown. A new generation hath gathered. There is now a place where thou mayest slag me the hell off to thy heart's content. At present, 'tis small, likely because thou can'tst find it unless thou knowest where to look. So hearken thee, and hie to The Crooked Lanes! *waves at Maliris* ((end cod-medieval accent)) Right, seriously, there's a forum over there. I have lurked and observed with Cthulu-like interest for a while now, but the time has come to try and direct a bit of traffic their way. Anything you wanna say, or if you just want to meet a bunch of people with a common interest in faintly nihilistic books about things that keep trying to eat your face, head over. I can't promise I'll be posting on it much, since I'm never on the Net (well, I am, but then I'm working, and I am IMMUNE TO TEH DISTRAKSHUNS), but I'll do what I can. There was a time in the past when I was quite active on the net. Then lots of psychos started mailing me. So please, if you're a psycho, don't bother, ok? In other news, I've started writing MALICE, about which I am tres excited. And I'm also writing a movie called BEHIND YOU, which is the project I hinted at last post (but now I've, like, got the job and stuff, so I can talk about it a bit). It's a horror movie, with a raaather unusual twist which I of course shan't tell you. Heheh. I also still want to do another pass over THE FADE before I'm done, but it's really getting into shape now. All this over the next six months, and that's not mentioning various other film/tv type projects that are slinking about. I'm not gonna be short of work this Spring, THAT'S for sure. posted by Chris at 5:01 PM

| Update! |
[Dec. 6th, 2006|05:51 pm] |
|
Tuesday, December 05, 2006 Sooooooo, I finished my edits on THE FADE which took about a month longer than I thought they would, have now bounced it back to Editorius Prime with large sweeping changes. Why, oh why don't I just write a flawless diamond of a first draft every time? It really would be more economical in the long run. *dramatic sigh* Am settling into Madrid nicely, though my Spanish is still somewhat akin to the sound badgers make when they're trying to bark up a porcupine. Whatever; I'm becoming an expert mime artist, anyway. And my vaguely 1/36th Italian blood means that Spaniards keep mistaking me for one of them, asking me directions and then ending up lost forever in the labyrinth of Madrid back alleys following my badly explained instructions. Next up I'm doing more script work for a cool little project run by some producers out of England, but as always I have to be cagey about it as professionalism dictates that I don't splurge every little detail all over the web. But, well, put it this way, I wouldn't be spending all this time training myself up as a scriptwriter (and neglecting my books...) if I didn't think something was gonna come of it eventually. Watch this space! After that, it's on to MALICE. Can't wait. If I don't blog before Christmas (a very real possibility, since I suck) then have a good one! posted by Chris at 6:40 PM
Dubi dub! He´s alive! I´m SO looking forward to Malice, and of course our beloved The Fade. A nice title if ye ask me. It´s creepy and somewhat more interesting than Halflight. So yay!
But... just imagine you meet Chris in the middle of Madrid. Bwaj! <3 |

Thursday, October 19, 2006 Hola, que tal, como estas, yadda yadda. So here I am in Madrid and it rocks. I get to loaf in cafes and bars looking thoughtful with a notepad and a laptop, pretending to be Hemingway (who as we all know was a BIG fan of laptops) but coming off more like the fat guy from Cheers. My crap Spanish is steadily improving and I'm still in that wonderful stage where I spend all my time marvelling at how cheap everything is compared to London. London can be likened to an enormous greasy leech that attaches itself to your wallet and causes you to haemorrhage currency in a shiny trail behind you wherever you go. As you can probably tell, I miss it terribly. Right, so what've I been doing? Well, Halflight finally got the name revamp I was going for. Now it's called THE FADE. Am still editing it (I know, but I only really got onto it recently, cos of other stuff I was working on) but it's all going very well and is still very much on track for Oct '07. Man, that's a year away. Depressing... Malice has already been bought up in the US so hopefully we will get a simultaneous US/UK release for that puppy. Planned for Autumn/Fall '08 with the next one in the sequence (yes, it will be a sequence) the following year. Still waiting for final contract guff to get done but it's all pretty much in the bag now so I'll get on that next. Have finished my near-fi SF movie, delivered it into the jaws of the industry, so we'll see. There's a bunch of movie and TV stuff afoot, but as I've said a bazillion times there's no point talking about it until it's all firmed up and contracts have been signed, so will keep you advised when something solid is set down. Which should be very soon, at least for one of the projects... Also, Storm Thief came out last month in the US, and just about to be released in the UK is the THE BRAIDED PATH anthology... all three books in the trilogy combined in a deliciously sensual trade paperback edition, heavy enough to crush small children with. In fact, the liner notes encourage it. So if you haven't got them already, now's the time! posted by Chris at 12:26 PM
I started to giggle while reading it. I love this "Heavy enough to crush small children with. In fact, the liner notes encourage it." Bwehehehehehe ~

Tuesday, August 29, 2006 I have reverse-evolved into some sort of convalescent sloth-being over the past few months. Lot of speculative project work (ie chucking ideas at people and waiting weeks for them to reply with yes or no), lot of thinking through what I'll be working on next, lot of faffing around, and somewhere in there I decided I was moving to Madrid at the end of September. Erk. Well, what can I say? I got bored, and London's excuse for a summer didn't help. Right now I'm trying to sell all my possessions. I used to be able to live happily in an average sized bucket whereas now I seem to have accumulated tons of stuff. Downsize, downsize. Anyway, I might stay four weeks or four years, who knows? You? No, you don't. Workwise, after long consideration I finally came up with Teh Best Idea In Teh World Evah (which is how I always feel about my books at the start, and I end up cursing their name by the end) for my next YA/crossover/whatever book. It's called Malice. Obviously, it's a romance. Ahem. Or possibly not. Actually, the idea is that it will scare you into a small quivering blob. Still, I can say with a fair degree of confidence that you ain't seen anything like it before! Have yet to bash out details with Scholastic, but they love the idea, so I'll let you know when I know. Meanwhile, editing Halflight(which WILL get its name changed as soon as I think of one) and writing a near-future SF screenplay just for fun really. I like it a lot though so it may get converted into an adult-market book at some later stage. Everybody listen to the most ridiculously insane guitar solo of all time ever. For some reason whenever I hear this music I feel the urgent need to grab an axe and go riding over snowy wastes towards hordes of orcs or something... posted by Chris at 6:17 PM
Wow! Madrid?
I still like the name Halflight but if Demi already owns that name... sadly I cannot think of good names. I suck at names, really! XD

Update! Just returned from Belgium so I couldn´t update immediately. But whatever:
Friday, July 28, 2006 Hey. Still here. Halflighthas been delivered and is undergoing the cruel scrutiny of my editors now. I'll be changing the name, though I can't think of what I'll change it to yet. Pandemoniumhas been received with delirious praise from my editors in the US, which is nice, as it means you can pretty much expect more graphic novel action from me in the future. Aaand... well, that's about it, really. All of July has really been spent sitting in various parks and working out what I want to do next. Usually I just jump from one project straight into another but this time I decided to allow myself a bit of breathing space before I get going. It'll probably do me good. Oh, in very good news, Scholastic are at last re-releasing Broken Sky in the nice 3-volume format I've been hounding them about. So finally y'all will get to see Broken Sky in its orignially-intended format, and a whole new generation of kiddies who never got to read it first time around will be able to get their mitts on it. Yay! First one comes out Sept 2007-ish, with the other two to follow in 2008, and my newie probably arriving end of 2008. So, I'm writing away at a film at the moment, and also at a little project for New Line and a couple of other filmy things. Trouble is, film projects have a huge kill ratio so most of them will never see the light of day, but still, it's fun. After that, depending on how things pan out, I'll be doing the next in the Pandemonium sequence or my next YA book. We'll see... Oh, right, the website. Having some techno troubles with the updates at the moment, which is why you still don't see Storm Thief there. Will have it fixed up eventually! posted by Chris at 8:13 AM

Synopsis A subterranean world of vast caverns, underground seas, crystalline forests. A civilisation born of darkness, in darkness, protected by shadows. A city of merchants, whose eyes have turned upward to the surface, where the lethal light of day beats down on their world. A conspiracy so vast that it will swallow them all... A stunningly original fantasy from a multi-award winning author. With a beautiful baroque world, sharp characterisation and Chris Wooding's trademark insight into the fantasy genre, the dawning of Halflight is an event more than worth waiting for. Taken from amazon.de.

I know it´s not really happened much in the Crooked Lanes. But we can only change that if we use this forum as such. Everything started rather good and we all were hopeful that it would last. It would be nice if you could spend some time on the Crooked Lanes, discussing with each other about Wooding´s books or general things. We owe him that much, I think.
Apart from that, I´d like to hear your opinion how we can keep this place going. There are things I did wrong, I am sure. So please, tell me what´s in need of changing and re-doing. I guess one thing we need is advertisement.
See you all on our Crooked Lanes.
