11:04 am - Cyclist killed on Swanston st
http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/comments/0,22023,24364277-661,00.html

I'm sure most have heard about the incident itself, what I find most fascinating are the readers comments, it shows the Herald Sun has a lot of readers with extreme and contradictory views, some worrying, some good. I am a keen cyclist, but EVERY road user needs to learn to respect each other and the rules of the road.

02:19 pm - JPod
JPod
Douglas Coupland
www.jpod.info

Perhaps the closest reference point to Douglas Coupland for those of you unfamiliar with his work is Kurt Vonnegut, a reference point that I’m sure Douglas Coupland hears frequently. If you’re unfamiliar with either’s work then I guess the best description would be, “different” or maybe “hyper real”, characters sort of shamble through in a state of confusion that no one else suffers from with odd occurrences happening to them that no one else considers odd. JPod is a book about and aimed at Geeks, there are a lot of references in the text to computers, Geek culture and attitudes that may be lost on those unfamiliar with them, whilst this wont detract from the plot, Jokes will certainly be missed. JPod also makes a habit of inserting lots of random pages into the book, some relevant, some a complete waste of tree, for example over 60 pages filled with numbers involved in games that the characters play with each other whilst at work, a nice character building device, but a waste of paper.
A funny and easy read (this took me a week and I don’t have a lot of time to read in my life) full of accurate and amusing observations, but one that will be lost on many people.

02:04 pm - Rome & Jerusalem, The Clash of ancient Civilisations
Martin Goodman
Buy from Readings

This book took me a very long time to read, months in fact, the topic is a weighty one, not hard to understand or absorb, just one that can only be digested in short sittings. It deals with the long running conflict between Rome and Jerusalem, dating back to the latter years of BC and effectively (through recurring anti Semitism) running until now. However this book deals with events primarily up to 4th Century AD and the collapse of the Roman Empire in the West, including the fascinating reign of Constantine who took the Roman Empire from abusing Christians, to spreading their word and simultaneously alienating even more in the Jewish world.
A fascinating read, but not for the faint hearted or those expecting to learn more on the subject any time soon.

01:48 pm - The Zombie State, Union Theatre, Melbourne University
The Zombie State
17 - 27 September 8pm
Location: Union Theatre, ground floor, Union House, The University of Melbourne
Tickets: Full $25/Concession $15/Union Members $12
union.unimelb.edu.au/tickets

The Zombie State’s tagline is “Melbourne finds itself in the grip of the vengeful dead. Who will stand and fight?” not wanting to give too much away, this is somewhat misleading and doesn’t quite allude to what the play is really ‘about’. For student theatre this is a big budget production, a high quality nightmare corridor with two plastic booths stage front form the set for most of the production, with many door ways providing ample opportunity for the cast to appear from in a disconcerting way.
Technically the production is ambitious. When action is taking place in either of the booths the sound quality takes on a shrill, claustrophobic character. Some scenes also happen backstage with video cameras streaming footage onto two large screens at the front of the stage, an interesting and novel method that causes a few (apparent) technical problems with microphones malfunctioning causing sections of dialogue to be inaudible.
There is no real ‘star’ in the production, the cast including a Prime Minister called ‘Kevin’, his four secretaries (all dressed identically), a Dentist, a Doctor, a Nurse, a Teacher, a Cleaner / International Student, a Taxi driver and a bar tender. Locations include the Casino, a retail outlet, the 2021 big ideas conference, a nightclub and a pier. Are you starting to get the idea? Perhaps if I casually mention that the ‘zombies’ in question may not be quite what you initially expect (though they are ‘traditionally’ made up) and that the ‘brains’ they crave may not quite involve ripping off someone’s skull.
It’s a sceptical production, the humour veering wildly between being too subtle and nepotistic to being so starkly obvious a cringe may tremor on your face. It’s a very contemporary and topical script, The program mentions that it’s conception began around 2004/5, there must have been a certain amount of updating in recent months as unless the Fortune Teller character’s powers were real some elements of the script calls upon events that have occurred very recently.
A bold and adventurous project and worth a visit, just don’t expect a stage version of Night of the Living Dead, well, not the zombified kind anyway…

08:17 pm - Two lessons learned today
So, I've learnt two important lessons in the past 24 hours...

One : When somebody hits you and your bike with a car door and they offer you their details in case there's anymore damage, even if everything looks fine, take those details!

Which leads nicely to...

Two : Sometimes if you can't seem to fix something despite many attempts, it's not because your incompetent, it's because there is something wrong!

Basically, to summarise, after thinking my bike was absolutely fine after our collision, I finally noticed that there is something more seriously wrong (subtly) with it, something that may get worse and may be expensive to fit, or may be manageable...

09:01 am - Another bike accident...
Hmm, last night someone opened their car door right into me on Brunswick st, sending me flying about two metres...

Considering the speed, impact and whatnot, I've come out of it surprisingly well, everyone was very helpful, the person in question gave me a lift to my destination and gave me some money to cover damages...

But why after (a cumulative) ten odd years cycling in London did I only have one accident, unyet here in less than two years, I've had three!

I have been cycling more, and there are no tram tracks in London, or maybe it's just the more careless drivers in Melbourne...

Anyway, myself and George (that's my bike!) are OK, just a bit shaken up and mildly annoyed...

10:51 am - 'Anyone Can...' Zine Launch
The ‘Anyone Can…’ zine Launch

After an incredibly successful three months of workshops, meetings and biscuit eating the City Library’s Street Press group finally releases the first issue of the collaborative zine, ‘Anyone Can…’ on the 6th September.

The workshops set up to give anyone interested in any aspect of Street Press an opportunity to meet, talk and create is embarking upon it’s first printed venture, a zine about… Zine making!

Issue one will also feature the CBD section of our handy fold out zineseters guide to Melbourne Google Map. We will also be welcoming ideas for issue two’s theme, all suggestions being entered into a magical hat and picked randomly to set the issue’s theme.

The plan for the day :

Starting at 1pm at Sticky, 10 Campbell Arcade
The best starting point for every keen zine maker in Melbourne, come and pick up your copy of ‘Anyone Can…’ for a paltry $4, enjoy some nibbles and browse the rest of Sticky’s extensive collection.

Then at 2.30pm join us at City Library, 253 Flinders Lane
Where we shall colour in and decorate the covers of ‘Anyone Can…’, take the opportunity to see the facilities at City Library and of course, enjoy some more nibbles.

We hope to see you there!

08:04 am - Acting your age
When I was younger I always used to hang out with people several years older than me, I got on better with them, found them more mature, being the overly serious teenager (early twenties) young man I was...

After a year or two of 'finding myself' I now find myself frequently hanging out with people several years younger than me, because they're not so serious, aren't settled, are more up for fun and increasingly, don't have children...

Funny, it's like I'm now reliving the years that I missed out on the first time round and proving the fact that you are only ever as old as you feel and it's never too late and you are never too old to do whatever you feel like, and be accepted.

Ace!

We're having a clearout at home in Brunswick and have a few items that
we want to get rid of, most are broken or incomplete, but we wanted to
see if anyone had any use for them instead of just throwing them into
landfill waste...

They are :

2 large yellow leather (or immitation )chairs
A wooden rabbit hutch
2 lengths of garden hose
plastic pet carrier
wood slats from an Ikea bed
metal clothes horse

08:36 am - Hypocritical knobs
One of the places I work for has embarked on a massive project to supply free computers and training to over 800 residents of a local housing estate.

Tuesday was the project's official launch, full of various local dignitaries and politicians who spent 45 minutes congratulating each other. After they feasted on the free nibbles and it was time to present certificates and celebrate the residents (those they were supposedly so dedicated to) they’d all pissed off. Damn rude and damn hypocritical.
