firstly, my commercial is playing now, mostly during big ten basketball games. tonight illinois plays ohio state on espn. it will prolly air @ halftime. its in black-and-white. i'm the and-white.
i have my 14th annual top ten party today thru saturday night w/my buddies jim, harish and gene. gene is hosting in michigonein60seconds! we play our favorite songs for each other and talk about the most squiddly diddly flicks while getting riotously drunk. here's my bestests.
Songs (Title-Artist-witty barbs) 1. DANCE-Justice (incredible fun and jawdropping video to boot. too bad theys lame frenchies who were dicks when i met em. sully got me into their show, thanks pegleg) 2. In our bedroom after the war-Stars (makes me sad cuz of people who die before their time. stars put on an amazing show this november. they threw roses into the crowd yalls! only thing missing from their show was my fiance) 3. Hospital Beds-Cold War Kids (they knocked me the fuck out @ the metro. this song has many a level. thanks derrick. eat a bag stafford) 4. The way i live-baby boy da prince (my student veencent put this on an extra credit disk. the bassline is headbobbsical. beth and i love this track.) 5. Atlas-Battles (Sinister and clever. the words are obscured. when i found out the lyrics, it held up. "the singer is a crook". this is my brother's nod) 6. Ocean-The Format (my student alyssa put this on her x-cred cd. beth and i mash play on this joint in the car and smile wide as can be, especially @ the oh-way-ohhs.) 7. Ghost in my house-Band of horses (this video makes the song. its simple but really powerful) 8. Our life is not a movie or maybe-Okkervil river (j told me about the line "its just a life story so there's no climax". the emotion swells perfectly) 9. Fake Empire-The National (i actually like the last national album more, but this song is super well constructed. some of my favorite poetry.) 10. Rehab-Amy Winehouse (Shit i didn't want to like this track, but it is too catchy and the most self-reflective irony i've ever heard)
Honorable mentionment -friends-ween (umm, a fake techno cheese ween production is always welcome. the "friends ep" is all gravy) -myth takes-!!! (the wild west atmosphere is shakin' me down good) -devil's arcade-bruce springsteen (thanks for making me cry the boss. you will rue the day you became my hero.) -plaster casts of everything-liars (liars stormed back w/a rawkin' hammer toss of an album. this song says it all!) -black mirror-arcade fire (wasn't too into the Neon Bible album, but this song has a really nice tempo change and the strings make it rise)
Movies 1. No Country for Old Men (Javier Bardem is in my brain. he controls my fate. thanks for being brilliant again Coen brothers!) 2. Once (it was the exact right length and was so tender for me and me ginger snap) 3. Juno (better than i thought. the first 5 minutes had me puking Napoleon Dynamite extract, then it got its own legs and charmed me to squeeze my lady) 4. Paris Je'Taime (the "Le Marais" and the African scene were my favorite. the quick takes between stories set me on hyperthought.) 5. Planet Terror/Grindhouse (Robert Rodriguez kicked Tarantino's ass in Grindhouse. His movie was kickin' the shit out of my senses. i also love the trailer for "Machete") 6. Superbad (Knocked Up wasn't anywhere close to as much fun. Michael Cera is so unique and very Joel Chmara-esque in his inept awkwardness in the high school spazz mold.) 7. Lars and the Real Girl (Well casted and way sweeter than i thought it'd be. the movie could have been a joke) 8. Darjeeling Limited (i expected more, but they captured India so well and i was stimulated in a-non sexual way the whole time. who'd have thought that was possible?) 9. Pan's Labyrinth (it counts as this year for us. i wanted it to be creepier, but the movie was very imaginative and heart-tugging) 10. Hot Fuzz (the last half-hour is among the most entertaining i've ever experienced. before then, it dragged me through typical brit humor. hey, did you know they drink beer?)
I must also honor my mentionables! -Sweeny Todd (ehh, Nightmare before Scissorhands?) -I am Legend (better than i thought. the fresh prince has the cutest ears) -300 (too much mindless fun) -Bourne Ultimatum (i love this shit) -The Namesake (very beautiful moments)
WORST MOVIES 1. Transformers (fuck this noise. i walked out during the climax. michael bay was handed the most freakin' awesome cartoon and gave us Pearl Harbor Robots. i hope he never makes a Heckle and Jeckle movie) 2. Because i Said so (Diane Keaton sets women back 32 years. i saw this on a plane. i rooted for turbulence) 3. Music and Lyrics (Why does United show only movies w/lines like "no she didn't?" and "i'm so terribly bad @ this, but what i'm trying to say is... umm, err, i like you?")
it should be noted that i no longer seek out bad movies. there were years when i watched "Joe's Apartment" and "Baby's Day Out" cuz i knew they were shit that wouldn't be easily scraped from my cross-trainers. otherwise, i imagine that the enraging "Underdog" movie or "Bratz" or "Who's yr caddy" would have been treated to a snarky tubthumping. i know i would have HATED UNDERDOG since, upon seeing the trailer, i almost threw myself out the window of my 3rd floor apartment.

it's good to be back chicago! i missed my shorty. it's really hard to get engaged and then be away. i was so sad when i left her place for the last time before slam nats. i woke up bummed every morning in austin. i can't wait share a place w/my ginger snap. we're looking in lincoln square right now. we're gonna go see "butch and sundance" in the park tonight. we had an awesome quiet dinner @ my place yesterday. things are good on the homestead. if you wanna know more about my undying love and won't yack on yr laptop, shoot me an e-mail and i'll gladly gush more.
SLAM NATIONALS was cold medina! austin really knows how to throw a party. i saw so many good friends and got inspired @ times. highlights included robb making it to indy finals (chevy cavalier on tuesday was a sight to behold)-seeing mcgee and anise in the legends showcase (i love my mythical friends)-every time i got to hang out w/krystal (including 2 nights of birthday bashing)-the berkeley team on the 1st night (they brought the pain)-mental g representing both nights (proud to wave the chicago flag)-shappy doing his homespun lawyer piece and a 10 minute version of butterfly (he could make me shake a baby)-quality times w/andy buck (i got thrown out trying to steal 3rd)-madison's group piece about love (hell yeah cheesetown)-rachel mckibbons on finals night (you don't need more than 2 minutes to awe a crowd)-omaha on finals night (spooky and breathtaking)-6 is 9 (shit kid!)-roger's 3 man party on thursday (ummmmm)-sully's hats-stafford's pecs-sonya renee as a sac poet-"trigger" from austin-shiner bock-ego's-denver slam nuba's last poem-the nerd slam-chanting "USA"-the two snoos crackin' my ass up-lunch w/jeremy richards-alvin's breakdancing poem-my team being wonderful. i'm missing a load of stuff for sure cuz my memory gets foggy. i didn't see enough of buddy, mcgee or rachel mckibbons.
though the week was great, there were 2 terrible situations. first, derrick had an episode that left him temorarily paralyzed and he came close to dying. he's ok now, but it was really scary. i knew very little and don't keep in contact w/any of his friends. there were 4 days of major concern and they're still not sure what's what. then robb's step-dad passed away. it came right after we won our bout. the bottom dropped out of what would've been nothing but celebration. robb's family was back home going thru some rough stuff and he was in austin trying to hold it together. he did a great job on all ends, but if you know robb, you can help him and his family right now.
school's gonna start next week. we have meetings and stuff right now. i am very excited about the speech season. our team is incredible. i can't wait to see them. i'm reading a ton of speech material this week.
time to jam on the jelly. please don't remind me of how terrible i was in the nerd slam quiz. i'm brushing up on season one of buffy right now and paying more attention to detail. i paused "the pack" to write this. anyone remember the nerd on the show who almost got kissed by the mummy, almost killed himself in the watch tower and claimed to simply slip when the bad eggs got him. i need to know stuff like this if i ever show my face @ another nerd slam!

beth got me a ticket for lollapalooza today cuz i love DAFT PUNK. i almost started crying when i wrote her about how excited i am to see them. they are the stuff of legend y'alls. i've never seen robots making music live. my mind is set to explode.
ok, i bag on myspace sometimes, but this morning i sampled music from every band scheduled today and now am antsy in my pantsies to see austin's Ghostland Observatory and badassoldman Charlie Musselwhite. local kids Chin up Chin up should be the funzone too. the oddball moment may be when LCD Soundsystem plays "Daft Punk is playing @ my house".
in other news, i did present beth w/a ring that makes her all mine. being engaged feels really strange. i love saying fiancee. i feel regal... and loved. my life feels so together right now. when i was younger, it was so frustrating that i'd walk around knowing that i could control most of the problems i had, but finding the right woman was beyond my fanaglement. when i met beth, all that changed. now that i am to be wed, i am @ a peace i never thought i'd reach. will that change once we get married and beth is all in my face like the dad in "we're not gonna take it"?
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Gs37NSLy3z4
lots of awesome stuff happened this summer. i'll have to recap soon. i now wanna be back on livejournal more. i miss folks and have that connection to livejournal like it's the nintendo to myspace and facebook's less charming but better teched sega and turbo grafx-16.
ps-sorry katherine, i couldn't resist the video.

i finally dusted off the ole login button and made my way to LJ. so here's the scoop. i wrote a song that got played on espn radio 1000 and now will be in a contest on-line. it's a sequel to the super bowl shuffle called "The Super Bowl Rumble". Its on my myspace page under either joel chmara or Sackaford BeHaves. it will be up on www.kiss1035.com sometime later this week. please check it out and maybe give it many a vote!
gotta jam right now. my life is great on all fronts. school is wrapping up well. i hosted a speech tournament this weekend that went very well, despite the snow. trying to find time to write some new ideas i'm kickin' around. pissed around in an interview w/UR chicago and made stuff up about performance poetry. the usual.
spread the good news bears! vote joel later this week.

went to the normal slam last night. it was peaches and cream and all about saving pluto. i've now been to normal twice in the past 5 days. last year i visited once. i love what annie and rob have done w/the show. the crowd is really supportive. when i ran the show, there were a lot of my students there for extra credit and speech birds. now its more of a poetry community. i like that. seeing lil' banjo was all kinds of good times. jamie kilstein had a really good feature. set. robb and i got a lot of good chatting about speech and poetry on the way down. hooray beer... umm, poetry!
i have a show tomorrow called "bibliomix" that gerggers gillam is putting up. its a new show that features folks reading pieces greg picked out over music spun by a dj. sounds cool. the show is @ Locus, 2114 W. Grand. come out y'alls.
i haven't seen nearly enough of my girlfriend as of late. i need to fix that and spend QT on the DL w/my GF/BFF.
my speech team is adorable. i hope they commit and get amped! in my classes, speeches start today. i'm gaining energy through chewing coffee grounds.
our ensemble has a retreat/french maneuver this weekend. we's going to michigan to write and sing sufjan stevens songs. we recorded a cd last week that is the motts. y'all know what "the motts" is??? jamie kilstein didn't and it was really funny.

thank you to everyone who called and posted their thoughts about my god daughter. i haven't been able to respond individually yet cuz i've been so busy w/everything. the wake and funeral went well. so many people came and shared their emotions and got to deal w/what happened together.
my sister got married on sunday! that was incredible! i can't believe i'm not leading off w/that, but it was such a great weekend of rehearsal dinner and seeing my brother and brad. derrick and amanda came in and stayed w/us and there was plenty of good times. beth was such an awesome hostess and has so much of the mostest! there were concerts and sushi and pizza before the wedding. then on the big day, everything was sunny and fun. we danced, watched the bears and sang the superbowl shuffle as a family and brad made a mix of old electronic stuff that was underworld heavy. a beautiful sunday!
i'm regrouping now @ work. we have a workshop for forensics on friday and on saturday we're gonna check out the ISU tournament! i can't wait to see redbirds and show these new speech babies some stuff.
PLEASE COME TO THE LIP SHOW THIS THURSDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Blair is the out-of-town feature and emily rose is the local spotlight. i'm hosting w/mary fons. we need you rad poets to come!!! the space is so awesome w/drink specials and a wonderful staff. please support. its @ The Spot @ 4427 n. broadway. 8pm. $5. i'm on a poetry hiatus of sorts, so come and say hi.

its official. my god daughter just passed away less than an hour ago, just before i left school. she had been in pain lately and they let her go home 2 weeks ago as there was nothing more they could do.
i believe in some sort of god. i want to believe in an afterlife. she has to still exist in some way because she did not get to experience what she deserved. the whole "its not fair thing" is very true for a 7 year-old.
w/that off my chest, i seriously am dealing w/it pretty well. the lead up has lessen any sudden hit. i so hope that the family is able to pull together during this. they are handling everything so well. i'm leaving clc now and will head out to my parents' place and open up.

i want to thank the people who sent there best wishes and prayers out to my god daughter. when i was going through tough stuff, i got great response and support and appreciated it to no end. unfortunately, things have gotten really bad. my buddy steve behl broke the news that sammi is probably going to pass away in the next couple of months. i feel strange posting about it, but some of y'all may be wondering how things were going and i don't always like talking about it. she can't walk anymore and sleeps 18 hours or so. it's pretty bad. i was really happy that i got to see her on monday and she was awake most of the time there. beth came with me and i felt good that we got to add some levity to the kids and stuff. they're taking it really well.
because of it, when i was practicing the death show, i started getting really messed up and tried to decide whether to block it out when performing, or deal w/it while talking about the subject. in the end, i didn't get very emotional as i was mostly trying to remember lines. that's prolly a good thing. i sometimes have a hard time w/how performance can either be whoring out experiences and emotions or a true outlet to share what yr dealing with.
the show went well. i was upset that it wasn't highly attended. beth brought a ton of folx out who made me smile whenever i heard them laugh. i was proud of the show, though we need to tighten the way it ends.
the weekend was long, but wonderful. we had 2 weddings (they went really well), 3 bbq's (lots of driving involved), a show of beth's friend (dumont is a star) and got to see the weird sisters!
one very funny moment was going to beth's brother glen's wedding which was in a gazebo that was right next to a stage where a mexican dance troupe clogged very loudly when the wedding was spossed to start.

been gone for sometime. school started. my classes are precious. the speech team is formin' fine. there are plenty of administrative sources of stress, but this is a grand school and i have hope that conditions will improve.
so, the ensemble had a show this sunday and i did the nine inch nails soundin' SHIT GOT FUCKED UP piece (which is now on myspace for yr listenin' pleasure). if you don't know the piece/greatest idea ever, i use personal ads that i make fun of w/music underneath. after i finish the piece/rockin' jam session, this woman comes up to me. she asks me about one of the personal ads. turns out, she's the woman described by a dude who smitten by her. she's the nanny from smith park who has a hot pink bicycle. that blew my mind wide open. tyhe mill was fun. my favorite moment was when sully's mom said, "Joel, i haven't heard SHIT GOT FUCKED UP in a long time. (pause) It is the story of my life." thanks moms.
everything else is groovy and gravy. no shows this week. phew!

i am way excited about a piece i recorded. i'm uploading it on my new myspace music page. doorman j and i recorded it weds night. it's spossed to be called "The Personal Ads and This Time its Personal", but i'm gonna call "Shit Got Fucked UP" for the time being. J tweaked it out and added a bassline and it sounds very NIN after a while. i had a blast hanging out w/him. the dude cooks a mean curry.
last night's lip show was such a peculiar experience. The Spot is an awesome venue. the place is cozy and the staff is super sweet. the turnout was impressive. the problem was the open mic. we'd been blessed w/really quality poets, then last night, the mic struggled. Kurt Heintz was awesome and there were a coupla other solid folx, but most of the mic was rough and there weren't "go to" poets to bring the energy up. on top of that, i started the show by playing the new track i recorded and the levels sucked. the bass was heavy and it made the whole thing hard to hear. then some earth dude went on for 10 minutes and others went long, so lisa buscani didn't even perform. Mike Kadela and Dave Awl were both rad. Mike really impressed me cuz i ain't seen him feature before. i have high hopes for future Lip shows.
the ensemble is doing a show tomorrow that i would love to do, but i always have family and personal stuff to do on weekends. its the only time i can have QT w/my family and beth and i feel bad for being part-time when it comes to poetry, but i made a decision a while back that i'm not gonna be a full-time poet. its why i'm glad every show i'm a part of is only once a month.
my new place is slowly comin' along. i got electricity now.
umm, that's it.

the move yesterday left me really hurting. i have bruises on my thighs from leaning boxes against them when i took stairs. there were a few rough spots and it took way longer than i thought, but my stuff's finally in me new place. i get electric today and will unpack tomorrow maybe.
show's are comin' up tonight and thursday.
TONIGHT IS A DANDY SHOW W/THE SPEAK'EASY ENSEMBLE. we're doing a really awesome set @ Martyr's 3855 n. lincoln tonight @ 8pm. Iron Chef Poetry and goodtimes abound.
Thursday night is the next Lip Show. We moved to a place called The Spot (4437 N. Broadway) cuz Holiday Club sucked. DAVE AWL AND MIKE KADELA ARE THE FEATURES. dave's an original member of Too Much Light... and Mike Kadela was on a Green Mill team and is an incredible writer. Mary Fons and i host. 8pm. $5. please come to our new digs!

i got a call last night from my buddy behl. my god daughter had a setback. she had been progressing well and responding to chemo, but her MRI was pretty bad. i've been planning to take her and her sisters to the aquarium all summer, but i think there's gonna be a lot of tests and stuff now. i can't believe how cancer's like that. the bottom drops out all the time. i wish there was some way that the government could mandate that all scientists and other bright minds work on serious afflictions like cancer and AIDs before making things like dick juice and vanity treatments. i get this feeling that you make way more money developing cosmetic advancements and there are all these minds that could be helping solve real problems, but its not as profitable. i may be wrong.
until that call, things had been going super well. went to nashville last week w/beth. hung out w/my parents a bunch as of late. saw shanny and roy out in the suburbs, then supported the poetry slam up in palatine. recorded some stuff w/j last night. been writing consistently. and of course, tomorrow is pierogi fest.

i've been approved for my new place. its only 3 blocks away, but it is above a thai coffee house. hooray for joel!
i will not miss the car dealership next door to me. they don't have coffee or thai food and the way they find cars, is to hit the panic button. i've been woken up dozens of times as an alarm goes off for up to 2 minutes as they search out cars. they suck hard!
been biking a ton. on ravenswood, there's an ice cream truck that plays "come all ye faithful". seriously. i sang the "oh come let us adore him" part as i rode by. maybe the song is meant to create longtime customers who will be loyal to their truck over all others. i wonder if they call their "push-ups" "genuflects"?
last night, we went to a bar called the 4 treys. while playing pool, 2 dudes walked in to challenge us. their personalities were like when there's an alien/cyborg in the movie who tries to act human by saying outdated things and trying too hard. these guys were overly masculine and all about talking about how hard they wanted to party. at one point, my buddy tim bent over and here was the dialogue.
bro-culture: "don't bend over like that." tim: "flashback to prison days?" broculture: "where do you think i got all these bad ass tats?"
also got to hang out on beth's roof @ night. i've been wanting to check it out. it's a boss view. i love roofs!

somehow i pulled a muscle on my left shoulder. it hurts so much and i am now aware of how often i use my shoulder. who knew?
last night we had an awesome funky buddha show. the turnout was really impressive. the grudge match was really fun. there was a huge focus on humor. i got to see dan o'dwyer's viking piece. the minneapolis team had group pieces and were not slammy @ all. instead, they were funny and creative. mental graffiti had a new group piece that i dug. our rag tag all starz had so much fun and katherine did a poem for the first time in ages. i enjoyed dj'ing and co-hosting w/timmy stafford. i also love the heck outta el gringo loco!!! his poem was so rad.
after the show, i finally got to hang out w/my girlfriend. we were gonna stay @ buddha or go to weeds, but instead, ended up @ rainbow. most of the people who wanted to go there didn't show up and beth and i had to pay $20 to cab it home from a place we didn't want to go to. wish we stayed @ buddha. i wanted to see sully shake it in a conga line and wished aaron, shanny, roy and annie were able to stay. but alas, not all dreams come true.
i'ma check out some volleyball @ the gay games today. thursday beth and i head to nashville to visit derrick. i wanna see one of my clc speech kids mikee before he leaves for the navy. holy crap, pierogi fest is only a week away!

monday is the next funky buddha show. we're gonna have the annual grudge match. i don't know who from normal is coming, so i'm a bit worried and need to double check w/o'dwyer, annie, weightman and banjo. shanrock shake is a maybe. speaking of the new mrs. magnuson, she gave me this new icon. i sure did love monchichi when i was 5. that's when i used to play soccer w/all the stuffed animals. the monchichi was goalie. i remember an electric blue raccoon was my top striker. beth and i talked about rainbow bright last night, but i don't remember what she looked like.
FINALLY, EVERYONE HAS TO COME TO PIERRRRRRROGI FEST!!! it's july 28-30. on friday, we'z going to the polka parade!

this weekend was outsided. friday i hung w/sully @ the taste and played w/a shark torpedo ball!!! it was a blast. we got there before the crowds and watched street performers who reminded me of a readers theater. then i met w/beth and had the strongest margarita of my life. i haven't been drinking, so this lil' # shivered me timbers.
saturday we hung out @ beth's parents. i finally got to meet her nephew. i got soaked by water balloons and a sprinkler turned weapon of choice. we had dinner w/a grip of beth's friends and went to a party in bridgeport. my favorite moment was easily zip zap rappin' w/3 other people who knew every word of the superbowl shuffle.
my parents had folks over for the world cup yesterday. it was an underwhelming cup overall, but the final had some moments and more end to end action than i expected. i could care less about either country and their corresponding teams. both teams have players in the middle of the largest league scandal in the history of the sport. my sister, her friend james, beth, robbie q, the staffords (yeah, i called them that), luke and the neighbors were over. we played soccer in the sand after the game and now i am sore. robb and tim had blood drawn. it was so great that beth gets along so well w/my family and she loves the lord to death.
today i went into forensics high mode. i've been reading a lot of lit and brainstorming topics and have meeting w/students to get started on events. this is great to be motivated so early. (katie if yr reading this, hit me up.) just finished a book on subbing that i want to be done.
just got called by a prospective landlord. studio apartment go!
