missing Twitter posts!

us being silly
I just realized that LoudTwitter didn't post any of my tweets for like a whole week. D'oh! And here I was thinking "I don't need to post about that on LJ because they'll see my tweets."

Well, I won't copy them all in, but I'll paste in some high points:
July 17th:
9:52 am: Yesterday, tried letting bread rise in fridge all day. It didn't rise. Baked it anyway. Came out like Pratchett dwarf bread. Edible though!
12:09 pm: Just got email from the Boston Globe requesting permission to print my letter re Miss Conduct and breast-feeding. cool.
(note: asking permission to print it doesn't necessarily mean they'll print it. It wasn't in this past Sunday's magazine, but there tends to be a bit of lead time so we'll see what happens day after tomorrow.)
11:23 pm: Isaac still intermittently claiming to feel ill, but acts fine most of the time. I think he's just tired. But what do I know anyway?

July 18th:
Guess Isaac is feeling better. He ate FIVE slices of pizza. More than half a small pie! O.O
(note: he ate the remaining three pieces the next day!)

July 19th:
Isaac: (putting doll's hand on her face) Look mama! Me: Oh, is Baby Betty sucking her thumb? Isaac: No, she's picking her nose! Me: *facepalm*

July 20th:
9:05 am: Downloading windows xp sp2 so I can download itunes so I can download Dr Horrible. Because I am so Joss Whedon's bitch.
9:29 am: Changed my mind. Turns out I don't love Joss enough to risk completely fubaring my computer. :(
3:30 pm: Rain coming down in sheets, thunder and lightning like whoa...and the sun shining. weather is awesome.
3:45 pm: Big thunderstorm. Power just went out. And we didn't nap today - groan! (note, I posted this by txt around 3:45 but it didn't actually show up on Twitter until after 9pm.)

July 22nd:
10:13 am: I am wearing a dress today. I like it. Do I have feminist guilt over the way it makes me feel? hmm...not so much. I can be girly sometimes.
11:50 am: Isaac yesterday at pickup: "I totally took a nap today!" Also this morning he spelled FUAK w/fridge magnets and said "look, I spelled fuck!"
1:23 pm: Meant to add that I don't get to wear dresses much because they don't allow boob access. Changing at the office is my current solution.

...And I was going to say more here, but the day got away from me and now I gotta get going to the RED SOX GAME! :)

before I forget

  • Jul. 23rd, 2008 at 12:29 PM
cool dude
Isaac had his 5-year checkup this morning with the nurse-practitioner. He weighed in at 42 pounds and 43 inches plus a little bit. He didn't need any shots, but did need blood drawn for a lead test, CBC, and vitamin D. He didn't enjoy that at all. :( I had called yesterday to find out whether he would need shots, and they told me he wouldn't, but I was skeptical so I hedged my bets by telling him I wasn't sure.

So he was pleased to not get shots but very anxious about the blood draw. In retrospect, maybe it was a bad idea to have that conversation with the NP at the very beginning of the checkup -- but I thought it would help him to know what was coming. Sigh, always a guessing game.

Anyway, so he was so busy worrying about the blood draw that he wasn't his usual chatty self with the NP, flat-out refusing to answer many of her questions -- though he did warm up after a while. He wasn't crazy about the regular exam either but tolerated it okay. I asked the NP to watch him run since our old dr had expressed concern about his running style, and he really enjoyed running up and down the hallway for her ;) and she said it looked fine to her. I also asked her about allergies since he coughs and clears his throat a LOT. She suggested trying children's Claritin which I think we will give a try.

Then we went into the lab room for the blood draw, about which the less said the better, except that it's all behind us now. And afterward we went to Dunkin' Donuts for a consolation donut, plus an extra free munchkin that the woman behind the counter gave him -- he ALWAYS seems to score free munchkins, lol. (Me: "It was nice of her to give you a free munchkin." Isaac: "Yeah, an extra munchkin." Me: "Yeah, it must be because you're so cute." Isaac: "No, I'm too old to be cute." As if!)

Anyway, just glad that's all behind us now! As usual, Isaac bounced back a lot faster than I did from the trauma. heh.

Dr. Horrible

Okay! Okay! After two dozen posts on my flist about it, I get the hint that this Dr. Horrible thing is, you know, maybe kind of a little bit cool and maybe I should think about checking it out. So the kids and I watched the first two parts.

I'll say more later (like when I don't have two kids yanking on my arms) but for now, just this: All you johnny-come-latelies who aren't watching "How I Met Your Mother" and are just now discovering that Neil Patrick Harris is teh awesome? I laugh in your general direction. I got on that train like two years ago. If the man weren't gay I'd quite possibly be stalking him (yeah, in my copious free time...).

Anyway, and for those who were surprised that he can sing? You must check out this YouTube video immediately: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhXsJjVdj1E

You're welcome.

Today I did something I hadn't done in months: bought a loaf of bread. Yeah, well I've really been enjoying making my own, but when it's 95 degrees outside, turning on the oven doesn't seem all that attractive. alas.

I am experiencing conflicted feelings about my financial situation. behind this cut I shall expand on that at length. )

So, the bottom line is that I have several good reasons to feel hopeful that things will start getting better soon...and yet, I don't feel hopeful. It just seems impossible to imagine ever digging myself out of all this debt. Maybe that's just my desire for instant gratification talking.

Somehow it will all work itself out, I guess. It's just discouraging to see how fast the money disappears. Each payday comes and I'm already planning out how I'll allocate everything to make it through to the next. And I can't get over feeling how wrong it is that things are this way given the salary I make! But don't get me started on How Our Society Conspires To Keep The Single Mom Down. We'll be here all night. ;P

Hey, sorry to make my first substantive post in ages such a downer of a one. Uh, have I mentioned lately that my kids are adorable? ...yeah, I got nothin'. Try again tomorrow.

another futile attempt to get caught up

Urgh, where to begin....

Friday, Ruthie was sick. the minutiae thereof )

Anyway, she seemed basically fine this morning so I took her off to daycare as usual and my fingers are crossed.

On Saturday we went out to the cottage with my mom again. [info]sandykidd and Baz were there, having slept over Friday night, so we played with them and had a cookout and then we all slept over. SK and Baz slept in a tent on the lawn, which they seem to have quite enjoyed (sooner them than me ;) ). Sunday, the kids woke up around 7:30. Or was it 8? I can't remember, because my mom took them outside and let me go back to sleep. Have I mentioned recently how great my mom is? ;) I slept till just about 10am. It was a gorgeous day and we spent the rest of it doing the usual cottage things. Isaac is getting much more confident in the water, splashing and floating on floats and all that kind of thing, which is great to see. Ruthie, of course, has been confident from the beginning. I swear that kid will be the death of me. She just walks right into the water up to her chin and would keep on going if someone didn't grab her! Oy!

Anyway, fun was had by all, and Ruthie and Baz at least were kind enough to take turns engaging in 2-year-old typical behavior, rather than doing it all at once. ;)

Then we packed up and came home, which is always sad. snif snif.

Last week I read The Road by Cormac McCarthy. I must say I was underwhelmed. I'd heard so much about it, but it failed to really affect me the way it obviously did many others. Not really sure why. But I'm still glad I read it, and looking forward to discussing it with bookclub starting tomorrow.

I started in on The Dreams Our Stuff Is Made Of, which has been sitting on my to-be-read pile for ages and the news that Tom Disch (the author) had committed suicide pushed me to grab it. But then at the cottage I felt a need for some fiction, so I also started on A College of Magics by Caroline Stevermer, and I'm about 3/4 through that now and really enjoying it despite the only-average-quality writing and the large number of fantasy cliches. I guess that didn't really sell it, eh? I think I shall actually reserve judgment until I finish the thing. But really, I am enjoying it and eager to see where the plot's going to go.

In other random news, we have decided to try calling our new kitty Grover instead of Chubby. It's hard to tell yet whether that's going to stick, since we're still in that phase where we mostly call him "Chu-I-mean-Grover." But he definitely needs a name other than Chubby, because he's really very svelte.

I think that's all the news that's fit to print for the moment...more to come, one hopes....
