Die, Old Adam! Die!
Philip Melanchthon, Apology to the Augsburg Confession, Article V:17

"We are freed from this error when God shows to our hearts our uncleanness and the heinousness of sin. Then, for the first time, we see that we are far from fulfilling the Law. Then we learn to know how flesh, in security and indifference, does not fear God, and is not fully certain that we are regarded by God, but imagines that men are born and die by chance. Then we experience that we do not believe that God forgives and hears us. But when, on hearing the Gospel and the remission of sins, we are consoled by faith, we receive the Holy Ghost so that now we are able to think aright concerning God, and to fear and believe God, etc."

I know that the famous quarterback who can't properly pronounce his own name has been in the news a lot lately, but the story broke when I was on my honeymoon.  Can one of the cheesehead readers give me the lowdown?  I'm lost.

Jul. 19th, 2008 @ 05:47 pm Pentecost 10 (LW 3 year series)

Rev. Charles Lehmann + Matthew 13:44-52 + Pentecost 10

In the Name of + Jesus.  Amen.

The world loves to listen to Jesus' parables because it hears in them some sort of basic worldly wisdom instead of what the Lord is really teaching.  Since the world does not believe the Word of God, it is able to find in the parables a Jesus who is just a good moral teacher.  The world wants Jesus to be a first century Oprah or Dr. Phil.  The world wants him to give advice on relationships and make them feel good about themselves.  The world might even listen to Jesus for some basic financial advice, but it doesn't want God in the flesh.

The world doesn't want God to come into our sinful world to redeem us from what eternally separates us from Him.  The world doesn't want to learn about the kingdom of heaven.  The world wants Aesop or the brothers Grimm.

Jul. 18th, 2008 @ 11:31 am Printing pictures
Do any of my readers know of a place where I can have my digital photos printed but make the cropping choices myself?  I was able to do this at Costco, but we don't have one here.

I know there are online options as well, but I want something local (and as cheap as online) if possible.

I'm in the most wonderful place in the universe:

     With my wife.

And if being with my wife wasn't enough to make a place the most wonderful in the universe, I'm on Mackinac Island.  Many pictures will follow, but here are a few moments worth mentioning:

Dinner in Frankenmuth at Zehnders, buying a Saint Nicholas Figurine (with a mitre) at the largest Christmas store in the world, going to a museum and learning about one of Loehe's colonies, surviving a thunderstorm on the way to Mackinac City, staying in a beautiful bed and breakfast, the sound of horse drawn carriages late at night and early in the morning, fudge smells wafting from the many shops, the sound of gulls and the waters of Lake Huron, a horse drawn carriage tour of the island, learning military drill at Fort Mackinac, really good food, lunch at the Grand Hotel (during which Jen and I were without doubt the best looking couple), walking along the shore, reading on the patio.

Tomorrow my friends Todd Wilken and Jeff Schwarz are back.  Read about Issues, Etc. and subscribe to the podcast here.

I called the studio tonight and had the joy of hearing Jeff answer the phone, "LPR." That is to say, "Lutheran Public Radio."

There's not even one little thing I don't LOVE about that.

Here's me with Jeff the last time I got to see him.

Yeah, he's a Mizzou fan, but we have to just forgive him that.  He does have the excuse of having gone there.

I am about to go to bed.  Tomorrow I will get up at 4:30 to fly to Denver and see the most beautiful woman who has ever drawn breath.  Next Saturday I will marry her.  Yup, I'm that blessed by God.  I know you're jealous, but I can't say I feel sorry for you. ;-)

Jun. 28th, 2008 @ 06:59 pm Sermon for Pentecost 7
Rev. Charles Lehmann + Matthew 11:25-30 + Pentecost 7

In the Name of + Jesus. Amen.

Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.”

Our Lord delights in children. He welcomes them into His arms. He places His hands on them and blesses them. When little newborn sinners are brought to the waters of Holy Baptism, our God and Father washes them clean, forgives them all their sins, and makes them His own children.

Jun. 25th, 2008 @ 02:29 pm Andy in his new home
Here are a few pictures of Andy enjoying his new home in Maryland in the days before he got sick.

The top two pictures are in the study. Andy enjoyed sitting on top of my printer as I worked on sermons giving me sage theological advice. He also liked to sit across from the desk in the recliner and found all sorts of comfortable positions to lie in. The third picture is by the front door. Andy liked to watch the cars go by and to make sure no birds swooped too close.

Jun. 25th, 2008 @ 09:15 am Andy is gone for awhile
I just found out that my dear friend Andy the cat has passed away. Luther once comforted his son by reminding him of the new creation and said that he would see his dog in heaven. I think there is strong biblical warrant for this hope. No discussion to the contrary will be tolerated on this blog.

I didn't know Andy as well as Jen did, but I loved him. I am happy beyond words that I got to have the last two weeks with him. Please pray for Jen and I as we mourn our friend's loss. We will always love Andy.

Jun. 24th, 2008 @ 08:55 pm Please pray for Andy the Cat

Our cat Andy is very sick. He has blood clots that are making it hard for him to move and are sapping his energy. He's in the animal hospital and is being treated there. Hopefully the medication will clear up the clots and he'll be okay.

His heart has been checked out and it's okay. This means that if the clots can be taken care of that Andy will probably be okay long term.

Jun. 22nd, 2008 @ 07:06 pm 6th Sunday after Pentecost; LW 3 yr series; Matthew 10:34-42

Rev. Charles Lehmann + Matthew 10:34-42 + Pentecost 6

In the Name of + Jesus.  Amen.

“The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself.”

When Saint Paul wrote those words to Timothy, he may have had today's Gospel lesson in mind.  Jesus tells us today that if we do not take up our cross and follow him that we are not worthy of Him.

This doesn't come as a surprise.  We know we're not worthy of Him.  We know that we are, as Paul says, faithless.  We live our lives as if God does not exist.  If we truly believed that God exists and is the sort of God He says He is, we would never for a moment wonder what to do in a moment of trouble.  We would pray.  We would remind God of His promise to provide us with daily bread.  We would know with absolute unfailing certainty that whatever was happening, no matter how evil, God was working it for our good.  We would know that because we would always have in mind that God loves us.

But too often, that's not the way we live.  Too often we allow our fears to rule us.  We become afraid that God isn't who He claims to be and that He won't do for us what He has promised to do.  In those times, we look to the world and our sinful flesh for what we need in life.  It is in times like this that the saying “God helps those who help themselves” starts to make sense.  We become impatient.  We want God to work on our timeline instead of His.  But more than that, the saying “God helps those who help themselves” says that God's word is worthless.  It doesn't matter what He's promised, it's still all up to you.  But we've all heard the saying.  It's so popular that a lot of people think it comes from the Scriptures.

Jun. 22nd, 2008 @ 01:32 pm Good words
These words of Saint John Chrysostom are in my heart today:
If any have toiled from the first hour,
let them receive their due reward;
If any have come after the third hour,
let him with gratitude join in the Feast!
And he that arrived after the sixth hour,
let him not doubt; for he too shall sustain no loss.
And if any delayed until the ninth hour,
let him not hesitate; but let him come too.
And he who arrived only at the eleventh hour,
let him not be afraid by reason of his delay.

For the Lord is gracious and receives the last even as the first.
He gives rest to him that comes at the eleventh hour,
as well as to him that toiled from the first.
To this one He gives, and upon another He bestows.
He accepts the works as He greets the endeavor.
The deed He honors and the intention He commends.

Let us all enter into the joy of the Lord!
First and last alike receive your reward;
rich and poor, rejoice together!
Sober and slothful, celebrate the day!
