"Most of the procedures are done in the private sector[...]"

Well, obviously! Oh, *that's* what you mean by "private sector"...

7:24 pm - Score!
We went to Powell's downtown today, after waiting half-an-hour for a table at Kenny & Zuke's (it was from the sidewalk out front that I took those last two photos) and having a filling lunch. Bought a Thomas Cook Turkish phrasebook for the November trip, and two Sotheby's catalogs with hundreds of cool black-and-white photos reproduced--some old, some famous, some quite erotic. These catalogs were $5 each, and we felt we were getting a bargain.

Then we went walking, and because we pressed on, though we were tired, all the way to the Park Blocks, we came upon the Portland Art Museum's book sale. The last day of the sale, and they were slashing prices. We got *sixteen* photograph auction catalogs, some from Christie's, some Sotheby's, some Grisebach's in Germany. Four for a dollar, so 4 bucks for the 16. Those first two catalogs went straight back to Hawthorne Powell's for a refund when we got home. Now we have all the inspiration we'll ever need for our photographic endeavors...

7:15 pm - Two more pics...
Hotel Joyce, Portland, Oregon

The Joyce is one of the remaining "residence hotels" in downtown Portland.
It's only a block from the famous Powell's City of Books.

[info]citygent mentioned that Lehman Brothers is now Lemming Brothers, which got me thinking...might AIG stand for All Insurance Gone? Guess we'll know in a day or two...

6:10 pm - "A new voice tries to reinvent the French left"

Perhaps only in France could a 34-year-old communist letter carrier have a 60% favorable rating. Olivier Besancenot. I'd never heard of him. Interesting article.
