I wrote most of this a long time ago, actually. Three, four years? Back when I first got the idea for King Catgirl (as opposed to King Ratboy) of Kou. Anyhow, Nat brought up "spunky girl kirin" in comments last night and I realized I never posted this, which is exactly what it says on the tin.

Territory by Emma Bull: SO GOOD
--Endearing protagonists, male and female
--Dialogue so punchy it'll punch you inna face
--Organically rooted in its setting (does for Tombstone, AZ what War for the Oaks did for Minneapolis, MN, without help from fairies this time)
--Historical verisimilitude
--Doesn't skirt race issues
--Just the right amount of romansu (lurve story is only one ingredient in the succotash, and doesn't overwhelm the rest but adds DELICIOUS FLAVOR mmm)
--Pacing A+
--Contains an awesome horse
Can't find anything about it that isn't awesome, actually, other than A.) it ends and B.) the sequel's still WIP.
Not really a spoiler: the big Fourth of July ball chapter filled me w/ deja vu for reasons I couldn't pinpoint until I remembered the shindig at whatsit park in War for the Oaks. I...I think even its position in the storyline is the same? LOL MIZ B, I C WHAT U DID THAR but it's still great. Far be it from me to argue with plot advancement thru dance parties.

Can't figure out why I never thought before to use the World Fantasy Award nominations as a reading list. Hum. (Time to give Kay another chance, maybe? Allergic reaction to Tigana was violent and painful, but that was like fifteen years ago.) Anyway, next up in the queue is Freedom & Necessity, I think. Poss. strategic segue into Brust.
p.s. Doctor Who PSA: if you get Sci-Fi, they're running an S2 mini-marathon tomorrow, starting bright and early in the a.m. Leaves out some of the good eps, but.

In light of the S4 finale I've been thinking about the "girl travels to another world, literally or figuratively" bildungsroman (+ love story) and its endings. This is a favorite story template of mine, both in contemporary iterations and in animal bridegroom fairytales like "East of the Sun and West of the Moon." It has a finite number of endings, but part of the fun is guessing which end a given version will take. ( Spoilers for Escaflowne, Inuyasha, Spirited Away, 12K, HDM, The Sharing Knife, and Rose's story arc in new Doctor Who; TEE ELL DEE ARR )

"Kouri. Will you not tell me what's troubling you?"
At Gyousou's question Taiki hastily shook his head. "It's nothing."
Gyousou set down the papers he'd been studying and lifted Taiki into his arms. "Do you miss Mount Hou so badly?"

"Kohri. Will you not tell me what it is that causes you such sorrow?"

For folks interested in reading the Twelve Kingdoms novels & short stories in translation, pengiesama has a helpful overview here.
Did 4 more pages of "Kizan." It's finally getting to the good part. I am reminded that although he is a dirty old manh0, Shouryuu is kind of hot. Why you gotta be hot, Shouryuu. Stop messing around with the prince of Sou and go home to your unicorn.
Also began laborious process of archiving old 12K fic to IJ. I edit compulsively while doing it, which slows things up, but I'm able to read most of it without wincing.
Speaking of 12K fic, someone should write:
--Rakushun is the new king of Kou lol (come on, someone who likes ratboy better than I do needs to accomplish this. Although I was trying to decide this morning whether Rakushun would go on shouzan or not. First instinct says no, second instinct says maybe for academic purposes. "I'm just tryin' to write a treatise, 'Pilgrimage to Mt. Hou as a Journey of Self-Discovery'...now why's this kirin kneelin' at me feet" ahaha.)
--Renrin returns to Ren feeling troubled after Operation Save Taiki (has heart-to-heart talk with farmboy, maybe they hold hands??? or not)
--Enki vs. Gyousou: "Treat the chibi nice," srs bznss remix (from basically anyone else this would cause Gyousou to get hella pissed off, but I think from Enki he would shut up and take it. How much do I love it when he talks keigo at Enki in Kaze no Umi? A lot.)
