AU meme, and Phantom [Sep. 22nd, 2008|08:57 am]
[Tags|, , , ]

Phantom of the Opera season opener was on Saturday. The Phantom has clearly been working out, which means he's now of the proper Phantom shape, but leaves his trousers hanging like sacks over his legs :> The Amazing Vampire Raoul got carnations with a card with vampire fangs drawn on it, which he promptly displayed to the rest of the cast. Ooops. Should have drawn a smaller card ;)

I'm also trying very, very hard to kickstart my [info]x2009 story. I hope this meme helps me get my creativity on, if I have any takers *bats eyelashes*

The Hypothetical AU Meme: Take any one of the fandoms you know I write in (or think I should), and give me a type of AU (space opera AU, pirate AU, superhero AU, Ancient Rome, etc). I will then explain what story from your chosen fandom I would write for your chosen type of AU.

Last Phantoms of the summer [Jul. 21st, 2008|09:17 am]
[Tags|, , , ]

Despite having already seen it a few times, I'm not that fond of the Warsaw production of Phantom of the Opera. It's simply the only decent show in town at the moment, and I am fond of some of the actors. And the sets, because they're gorgeous; as [info]moe_almanthea recently remarked, they're really built for a stronger cast than the one we have.

Still, this weekend I had two opportunities:

- to finally see someone other than Damian Aleksander as Phantom

- to see the final summer show, in a theatre with a long tradition of making a fine mess of final shows

I went to see Phantom of the Opera again on Tuesday. What can I say? It's the only decent show in town :P Thankfully I don't have any more tickets until July 19th, and in the meantime I'll have Beauty and the Beast in Gdynia and too much Tanz and Elisabeth in Budapest. And this time around, I got to see the one Christine I had not seen yet.

I need more Phantom icons [Apr. 15th, 2008|07:41 pm]

Apparently there was a promotional event for the Warsaw Phantom of the Opera recently. This would be the lovely Raoul, with the third Christine (the one I saw the second time).

Phantom of the Opera, Roma theatre, take two [Apr. 11th, 2008|08:33 am]
[Tags|, , ]

On Wednesday, I found myself in the possession of someone else's media passes to Phantom. It would have been somewhat foolish not to go, even though it was Damian on again as Erik. Mind you, the rest of the cast was entirely different - I think only Madame Giry was the same one I saw the first time.

Huh. They got better. )

I have my next set of tickets for the 23rd. Don't know if I'll go yet, waiting for the cast to come up. Wanna 'nother Phantom.

Phantom of the Opera - Warsaw Roma theatre [Mar. 29th, 2008|10:58 am]
[Tags|, , ]

Obligatory pre-review disclosure: I like Phantom of the Opera, a lot. I adored the small stage version put up by the Palladium Stage theatre (clips available here), and after the first two rounds of auditions for the full Roma theatre non-replica production, I was overjoyed to hear that my favourites were also the judges' favourites for Erik and Raoul. Then they were abruptly cut, due to in one case "not enough acting ability" and in the other, current engagements keeping him from attending the audition. On top of that, I heard a lot of rumours that the musical's main sponsor fancies himself a director and meddled immensely in both casting and directing.

I saw the show yesterday. Verdict: Very good show. Can someone put the first Phantom out of his misery?

Plans of the musical variety [Nov. 23rd, 2007|09:02 am]
[Tags|, , , , ]
[Mood | happy]

Ohdear. They'll be playing Elisabeth in Berlin from April onwards, so I kind of think I'll be there with bells on sometime in May :> Depending on the cast, I guess - my favourite would be Jan Ammann for Death and Jakub Wocial for Rudolf and second Death, but generally, I like most of the possibles. Except Haldor Laegreid.

So that'll be thrice I'll be seeing Elisabeth next year - got two sets of tickets for Budapest already. (And possible plans for... more far-off regions in the autumn, but those are nowhere near being finalised.) And Tanz der Vampire at least once, Budapest again.

Phantom of the Opera in Warsaw, I'm sorry to say, fizzled out completely. My firm favourites were cut down - one for being unable to attend an audition, fair enough, but the other for "lack of acting ability". Which he does have, on top of an operatic baritone that leaves everyone in the dust.

On the other hand, that does leave him free for Beauty and the Beast in Gdynia (also in the spring), which has the potential for being gorgeous if they finally get their act together - they're a decent theatre, but no magic to it so far. I hope it'll end up being something interesting.

And on top of it all I should probably finally drag my carcass to London for Phantom, Les Mis and anything else that happens to be on. And I still haven't seen some of my must-see people live - currently Stanley Burleson tops that list, followed closely by Pia Douwes and Ethan Freeman.

Say what you want about this hobby, you're never out of places to travel to.

Phantom of the Opera - Warsaw Palladium Stage [Sep. 19th, 2006|09:17 am]
[Tags|, , ]

Tanz der Vampire only opens on Friday, but I've attended my first show of the season yesterday. I've mentioned Jakub Wocial here before (also see: Herbert, squee, recitals, photos, squee), and since I'm a fan of the Phantom of the Opera, I had to catch his small-stage version. His "Palladium Stage" theatre is just a rented room at a community centre, but what he did with such limited means is amazing.

And I don't just mean the voice, either )

[FIC] Only the Music (Phantom of the Opera, PG, gen) [Sep. 11th, 2006|06:58 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

The final part of the Songs in My Head series, which comprises Singing Songs in My Head and A Cry To Heaven, and should definitely be read in order. Disclaimers in the first chapter.

There are also two optional outtakes from this series - a mood-setting drabble called Hide Your Face and a slash detour Wine and Song. Neither is necessary to understand this story, and in fact I think you can read it both the gen and slash ways with equal validity.

As usual, everything is [info]fyrie's fault.

This is an outtake from the Songs in My Head series that may or not have happened in canon. Because I foolishly admitted to [info]fyrie that Erik and Raoul had the hots for each other, and she went "whee! smut!". Follows Singing Songs in My Head and A Cry To Heaven, set the next night after Cry.

[Mood | sleepy]

This was written for [info]fyrie, and because I have a strange combination of Phantom characters in my head at the moment - Erik from the Polish small-stage production and the original London Raoul. Erik in particular is a strange bird, mostly because the actor doesn't think twice about singing Raoul songs - or hell, Christine ones - during his recitals, while in the mask. A Phantom singing Twisted Every Way made an indelible impression on me.

Warnings: Heavy angst. And Erik is even more melodramatic than certain vampires.
Rating: PG

Summary: When it's over, Erik finds a place to think, but he's not expecting visitors.

[Mood | busy]

In between the thesis thing (which is slowly gaining momentum - I might actually get 10 pages done today), I'm browsing through YouTube, mostly looking at musical stuff, but not exclusively. My list of favourites is available here, but since it's cluttered, here are a few particularly worth watching:

A kickass and very well-vidded Van Helsing vid - from a now sadly defunct site, which is a pity, because I'd love to send feedback to the vidder.

La Fête des Fous - Bruno Pelletier in the musical Notre Dame de Paris. I like the way he moves.

Dracula - Nous sommes ce que nous sommes - worth watching, if only for Bruno Pelletier's outfit and makeup. My inner Draculea just about had a heart attack.

Gerard Butler auditioning for Dracula 2000 - OMG the hair is going to EET ME!

Elizabeth the musical, Japanese trailer - such pretty costumes, and the Death in this one is going to be von Krolock :D

John Owen-Jones, The Music of the Night - hands down my favourite Phantom. He has almost the exact same voice as Lukasz Dziedzic, too.

Tanz der Vampire - Unstillbare Gier. No words, none. If only Steve hadn't killed himself.

It's not like I've forgotten musicals... [Feb. 21st, 2006|07:29 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[Mood | happy]

Tanz der Vampire might be on hiatus, and I really need to go buy tickets for the shows in May, but that doesn't mean I'm not keeping on top of things.

The second-cast Krolock (due to whom I've already had to return two sets of tickets, since he's not who I want to see onstage!) was supposed to be now in Cats, but instead broke his leg badly while showing off for a few fans. Six weeks of having it in a cast, then physiotherapy - I'm feeling bad for him, but on the other hand, no more trying to peddle off tickets just because of argh, wrong Krolock :>

On the TdV fan forum, not only did I learn the name of the dancer who plays Krolock's shirtless dream-avatar, but also that he's commonly known as "the half-naked beefcake". Which is, you know, an accurate description. (This is also the guy who has sex on stage with both Sarah and Alfred's dream-avatars, and shares a lovely long kiss with Alfred's avatar...)

Also, Kuba Wocial finally has a proper site. And he'll be putting on the abridged Phantom Of The Opera again, and I'll be there in a flash. Also, there's a music section with samples of his voice - go listen to Music of the Night and you'll know why I want to send him flowers :D

[Mood | apathetic]

This is not one of my main Phantom of the Opera works, just a series of drabbles I dashed off to break a weird spell over the last week or so. Idle speculation abounds, style is lacking. Especially in the last drabble: between them Erik and Christine can outdo Anne Rice any time.

Don't think about the way things might have been... )

Creative woes [Jan. 30th, 2005|04:53 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[Mood | irritated]

Life continues to kick me. But I have other problems, too.

Opening line of current oeuvre:

"Paris was grey. The stones glistened in the rain like the bones of old gods, and chimney-smoke soiled the last survivors of the snowfields that had briefly bleached the city's face only weeks before. Water dripping from the edge of a roof to a balcony below rang out a funeral march."

I need to find a hammer and knock my new muse on the head ~_~ Erik, I know you're down and out and everything, but could you please try not to make me write like Anne bloody Rice?

EDIT

New version:

"Paris was grey. The stones glistened in the rain like frosted glass, and chimney-smoke soiled the last survivors of the snowfields that had briefly bleached the city only weeks before. Water dripping from the edge of a roof to a balcony below rang out a solo in three-eight time. Her companion was prone to translating everything into opera."

That's better. A bit.

If I see a very visual movie that at the same time is rife with quotable songs, the results are predictable. Source images from those were mostly lifted from GerardButler.Net and PhantomPhan.Net. The quotable quotes are, of course, from the musical itself. Take, comment, credit please?

First, in case any X people on my f-list missed it: Leareth posted an excerpt from the next chapter of X-Therapy ^_____^

In other news, Mike Carey needs to stop killing off people in Lucifer as soon as I get attatched to them. And Neil Gaiman's voice is lovely indeed.

I also saw Phantom of the Opera today. Gerard Butler? Was SO copying Antonio Banderas, especially in the Don Juan scene. He even did that little chin-bend Antonio does. And he pouted the same way. But unlike Antonio, he's not aware of the fact he can't sing. My poor ears :(
