Tunnel Vision
Yzak gritted his teeth in annoyance, trying his best to keep his volatile temper in check. It would not do to get angry in front of a visitor. Dearka and Millie were having an animated conversation as they slowly walked ahead of him. Both of them were now on medical leave after their hospitalisation. Instead of resting at home as any sensible person should be doing, Dearka was taking the opportunity to show that Natural from Archangel, Miriallia Haww around. Or as Dearka called her, Millie.
Her ship was docked in PLANT during the ceasefire in hostilities after the Battle of Yakin Due and she had shore leave. All the wounded from both sides had been treated on PLANT. Being Coordinators, both Yzak and Dearka healed fast and no longer needed hospital care though they still had a few more appointmemts to go before they could be completely discharged. Dearka's left arm for example, was still in a cast.
Yzak watched with sullen eyes as Dearka flirted shamelessly with Millie.
"Hey, Millie, look at that!" He pointed to the rose garden. "Wanna go there? Ya know what they say about roses being romantic."
Dearka wiggled his eyebrows in a lascivious fashion and puckered his lips, as if in preparation for a kiss. Millie punched him in the arm but she was laughing.
"You wish!"
"Aww, no kiss?" Dearka pretended to be hurt.
Millie played along and attempted to look thoughtful. It failed miserably, of course, as she kept bursting out in giggles. Yzak rolled his eyes. Girls.
"Gardenias. I like gardenias. If you show me gardenias, you just might get a kiss." She batted her eyelashes coyly at Dearka.
"That's all? You're on."
Dearka grabbed Millie's hand and they started running.
Yzak watched the departing couple coolly, trying his best to stop himself from being jealous. Millie, Millie, Millie. That was about the only word that rolled off Dearka's tongue these past few weeks. It was as if he had no one else in his line of sight, except for Millie.
"Hey, Yzak, think Millie will like this?"
"Cool, Millie will definitely want one to bring back to Earth!"
"Sorry, Yzak, I'd love to go but I promised Millie I'd go out with her today."
He had thought he could have used the time off to meet up with Dearka to discuss their future, especially Dearka's. Yzak's path was clear - he would return to ZAFT in whatever capacity he could, unless they specifically told him that his services were no longer required. Dearka's future in ZAFT, or indeed PLANT even, was a lot murkier. His absence and documented action as part of the crew of the renegade Archangel technically constituted desertion and treason. If he returned to ZAFT, a court martial would be the least of his worries. There was so much for them to talk about.
But no, instead of thinking about his future, Dearka wanted to bring Millie sightseeing. And he invited Yzak along for the ride. Not wanting to appear churlish, Yzak grudgingly agreed. So far, over the past one week, Yzak had followed Dearka on excursions to places he last visited as a child. They had been to various museums, the aquarium, whatever sections of the zoo that were still open and even Dearka's old school. Granted, there was a lot less to see now that PLANT was recovering from the war but Dearka was amazingly resourceful once he put his mind to a task.
They were now taking a walk in the national park. Dearka and Millie had disappeared, clearly in search of Millie's gardenias. Yzak snorted. Millie had been conned. The gardenia garden was one of the largest sections in the park. It was no big task to look for it, so he took his time.
Once he walked past the entrance, Yzak was assaulted with the sweet fragrance of the flowers. Dearka and Millie were standing in a corner of the park, kissing. Millie's hands were on Dearka's shoulders and Dearka's good hand was on her waist.
They looked like a young couple deeply in love.
Hot blinding anger blazed through Yzak then; anger directed at Millie. He despised this small chit of a girl who had taken his erstwhile best friend away from him. For one short spiteful second, he felt like calling out to Dearka, just to ruin the mood but he didn't have the heart to do so. Dearka would have his own troubles soon enough.
Yzak spun on his feet and walked away from the couple. Pride stopped him from saying what he desperately wanted to tell Dearka during all these past few weeks when he felt so neglected and abandoned.
"Look over here, Dearka. Look at me."
Note: This is how I perceive a post-Millie Dearka and Yzak relationship. Will Yzak mind that there's somebody else in Dearka's life besides him? Definitely yes. As to whether Dearka and Yzak's prior relationship was a romantic one, it's up to you to interpret it. But definitely, I don't see Yzak being happy about Millie in the early stages. Yzak is very possessive, IMO.
