Invincible
Dearka knows he's not the best Gundam pilot in the Klueze squad. He's not bad, definitely or else he would never have been granted the red uniform but he knows instinctively that he's not meant to be the star of the show. That's more Athrun or Yzak's style though in the case of Yzak, Dearka suspects it's attention-seeking behaviour more than anything else.
But Dearka's not like them, he's not meant to be the leading man. He's more the back-up, the unassuming reliable guy. A good man to have guarding your back. He's cool with the idea though. Every good hero needs a sidekick and he's got no issues about being a sidekick. Besides, if you've watched enough movies, the hero always gets into trouble and has a perpetually eventful life - be it discovering your enemy was in actual fact your long-lost childhood friend or having the love of your life dump you or just general angst they expect a hero to go through. Character-building, they call it. Athrun's the sucker for that kind of thing.
He wants none of that melodrama, thank you very much. The regular life will do for him, he's just cruising along having fun. Well, of course, his life was tad more exciting than the average PLANT citizen, being a Gundam pilot and all. He had his brushes with death but he survived, didn't he?
Otherwise, life was quite good for Dearka Elthman. Nichol's death was a dark point he didn't care to think about but he rallied around. It spurred him on to be more aggressive, just so he could pay back the bastard who killed Nichol. The plan was going fine till Athrun self-destructed along with the pilot of Strike and he got captured by the enemy. His Gundam was still operational but the odds were clearly against him and he had no interest in dragging out a battle that he was definitely going to lose. It was a strategic defeat.
His life got thrown for a spin then, especially after that girl appeared. Millie. All the drama that he had been missing in his young life came back with a vengeance. She fucking tried to kill him. Granted, he provoked it but jeez, couldn't a lady take a joke? And in a bizarre twist of fate, she saved him from a second murder attempt. Right after she tried to stab him herself. Later he found out exactly why she tried to kill him in the first place and he felt really low.
So he tried to apologise in an indirect way. Really. She was too sad for somebody so young. Having said that, not many people had their boyfriends blown out of the sky in front of their eyes. So Dearka resolved to get her to laugh. Theoretically, he should be able to do it. After all, he was the only pilot who was able to get Yzak out of his moods so he already had some practice at cheering people up.
They had to be on talking terms for his plan to work so he had to do things in steps. First, he asked her name, then he tried to get her to stay longer so they could communicate more. She was really cute when she finally smiled, with her green eyes crinkling at the corners. It wasn't a piece of cake and Dearka wracked his brain frantically for something funny to say before each meal but she was definitely more amenable to his cheesy jokes than Yzak ever was.
Dearka will never forget the first time he finally heard the rich sound of Millie's unbridled laughter. It echoed through the cold walls of the brig, warming his heart. She was serving him his meal as usual and he made some wise ass crack that he can't even remember now. Something changed inside him then and he realised that he wanted to hear that voice, that laugh, always for as long as possible.
Besides the more entertaining idea of getting Millie to like him, he was also contemplating defection. Strangely though, Millie wasn't the prime reason why he chose to change sides. She played a large part but Millie alone was not enough to get him to reject his previous life.
It was a culmination of a few weeks of pondering and dissecting his upbringing and beliefs. All that time in prison alone gave him time to think that perhaps, what he had been taught all along was wrong. That the reason ZAFT gave for continuing such a war was not quite what it seemed. And he began to despise the idea of having been used for such morally dubious purposes. Still he dithered from taking that final step. Old habits died hard after all.
Then they tossed him off the ship. Dearka knew it was hardly personal but it hurt to know that it was Millie who kindly showed him the way out of the ship. First he thought of just finding a way to get back to ZAFT but but the majestic sight of Archangel engaging all those ships in battle despite such unfavourable odds shamed him into action.
The moment when he helped in Archangel's defence was the first time he actually felt like he was doing something right. Something resonated deep within him, this gut feeling that this was the real reason for him being a soldier and being granted the privilege of being a Gundam pilot. A soldier was supposed to defend the weak.
Perversely enough, he was proud of his decision to defect from ZAFT. The act of defecting itself was not something he was happy about - he knew just how well traitors were trusted but he had thought matters through and was confident the reasons behind his defection were sound.
It was one of the first few times he demonstrated independent thinking and was not just parroting propaganda drilled into him from young. He found it rather refreshing, really. His father was going to throw a hissy fit but Dearka was done being a glorified pawn in an elaborate chess game that he had no control over. The fact that Millie was inordinately pleased with him joining the Archangel crew was a also huge bonus.
She warmed up to him more then, there was no mistake about that. But she was still hesitant. Dearka couldn't blame her. Not when the memory of Tolle's death was still fresh in her mind but he didn't mind waiting. Some things were worth the time invested and Millie's love was definitely one of them. He sensed that slow, subtle patience was going to win the race for him, not blatant displays of affection that would only pressurise Millie and turn her away from him.
"Don't go, then," with that admonishment, Millie abruptly turned off the screen.
"What?!" Hope flared in Dearka, against all his expectations. "Oy!" He pressed his hands against the screen of his Gundam desperately, as if that would bring Millie back.
Light flashed and she reappeared. "Sorry. Just kidding," Millie turned away, refusing to meet his eyes.
Dearka relaxed. He understood the huge concession on her part. It was only a small hint but it was enough to know that he perhaps stood a chance. "Aaa. Thank you." He tried his best to inject as much warmth into his voice as he could across the communications channel. Meanwhile, there was a battle to be fought.
"Dearka Elthman. Buster, launching!"
He may not be the best Gundam pilot around but at that point in time, Dearka sure felt invincible.
Note: This is the first half of a pair of fics meant for theme #16 (invincible; unrivaled). This is Dearka's half. Millie's half will come later.
