He chugged a bottle of extra hot peri-peri sauce for our marketing presentation back in uni so I think it's safe to say he is crazy enough to follow through.

Hey everyone

My birthday is coming up this Friday and to celebrate I'm having dinner on Saturday (31-05-08) at Durty Nellys and then heading for drinks at Carnegies. Dinner is at 7pm and drinks will be about 8 30/9pm.

If your coming to dinner let me know so I can book enough spots. My mob is 0431821494, give me a message on the night if your coming to meet up after.

Cross posting is fun!

Hi Everyone

My name is Alistair McKie and I’m the volunteer coordinator for Contact – Swancon 2009. I was previously the volunteer coordinator for Swancon 2005 and have been helping out with various other Swancons as a volunteer.

A bit about me first. My hobbies are reading (mostly SF), cooking, watching cheesy T.V shows and long walks on the beach. I also spend a large amount of time hunched over computers making them work better (for varying values of better). You have probably seen me at Swancon running around setting up events and being very hung-over at the breakfast buffet.

My focus this year is to ensure that Swancon runs smoothly and delivers the con experience you have all come to expect. To do this I need you. More specifically I need you to volunteer to help prepare for and make Swancon happen. You can volunteer to help with things like setting up the con, fund raising events or with the pre-con organisation. That’s just the tip of the iceberg though and there are plenty of things that need doing that would suit you and your ability to help.

Volunteering for Swancon is fun and a great way to give back to the community. Right now I’m just after expressions of interests and any recommendations that people have. So if you want to help or know someone that does, please contact me at volunteers@swancon.com . Also feel free to approach me at any pre-con events and offer your help (I will make it quite obvious who I am at our events, like our upcoming Iron Man screening in may).

Thanks in advance,

Alistair

I've been bumming around on TED - Ideas Worth Spread for most of tonight and have come to the conclusion that it will now be my biggest time sink online now.

So far I've watched a presentation by a deaf musician, a tour of Saturn and how to hack a Wii remote into a virtual white board and 3D head set. I've skimmed through many others as well.

Also check out We Feel Fine. If you ever wanted to find out what the current feeling of the internet community is, check it out.

$2750 for a pair of 3ft copper speaker cables

Because you know expensive copper transmits music so much better then non-expensive copper.

A review of the cables:

"Highly Recommended.”

"In extended listening sessions, I found the cables' greatest strength to be its PRAT. Simply put these are very danceable cables. Music playing through them results in the proverbial foot-tapping scene with the need or desire to get up and move. Great swing and pace—these cables smack that right on the nose big time."

[music |MythTv - Doing things right for once]

I think I've finally managed to get Myth Tv to play nice.

It now displays on both the Tv and the monitor in the kitchen. And plays DVDs (all regions).

All that is left it avi play back.

Also I saw my customer from hell on the news today. I swore at him and walked off.

And I've managed to score a ticket to BDO! I'm going at about 4 since all the bands before that are shit house.

*is ridiculously excited about seeing Rage Against the Machine and Brand New*

...when you fall asleep on the couch while watching the second day of test cricket. This was also after I finished my lunch of pies and sausages.

Anyway, I'm currently house sitting with [info]srahski in Ellenbrook for most of summer. It is the second most well armed house I've ever been in (no prize for guessing first place). Besides that its a nice little house that is well air conditioned and has two strange cats that seem to like rolling around in engine grease. This is the first time I've lived away from home for any amount of time and I've now come to appreciate how much food bloody costs. I'm also incredibly grateful for all of my mothers teaching me how to cook, I also appreciate this beyond words *looks at the steak marinating in the fridge*

Now I'm off to the shops again to pick Sarah up a heat bag.

Side note:

X-mass haul
-Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles and Metroid Prime Corruption
-Bottle of Ballentines, Jameson and Jim Beam Small Batch (I've had nearly half the bottle already)
-Mobile Phone holder, home made cheese, socks, sponge (don't ask), esky, chair
-EB voucher for $150 (was supposed to be Guitar Hero 3 but it was sold out)
-Slow cooker (ok I actually got this for [info]agoodliedown but I plan to use it to do up lunches for the week
-More stuff I've probably forgotten about

*plans to update more often now*

Irony is bitching about how the work spam filter sucks and being shown how it works, then several hours later a co workers machine gets hijacked and turned into a zombie machine. Which proceeds to spam our internal network with penis enlargement spam. His PC was promptly formatted and rebuilt with Ubuntu.

Then my work PC fucking kicked it. As in froze up then didn't even POST when I hard reset it.

I'm taking my laptop into work tomorrow and using that. I also think they may be replacing my PC with a Mac. I hope not since I 85% of my support calls are XP based. Let see if I can convince them to give me both.....

[music |QOTSA - No One Knows]

I have a job!

A real one with sick leave and holidays and such!

I'm now working for Highway1, they are a business ISP as well as a "communications provider" and development house. So far it's been a nice place to work, I was over dressed today because jeans and a t-shirt is the dress code. I'm answering their help desk phone which today meant answering the phone about 5 times and forwarding calls.

They are also an open source shop so I get lots of shiny stuff to play with. When they showed me my PC today they apologised that it was running XP and said I could install what ever OS I wanted on it. I'll stick with XP for now pending a RAM upgrade the machine needs badly.

Overall it looks like an awesome place to be working at this point in my career. The pay isn't crash hot but the work environment and exposure to awesome tech more then makes up for it. Plus I think they have drinks on Fridays so I can't really complain now can I? :-)

[music |Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta]

Nearly interviewed for the same job twice today.

Note to agencies: When posting job adds please make it very clear what the job is so I don't take two vague job descriptions and fail to recognise they are in fact the same job.

Luckily I realised this half way through the first interview and cancelled the second one with a different agency as the first agency put me forward for the job.

In related news I may be working a 5 week temp contract for a major financial company. Stay tuned for more news.

[mood | apathetic]

Had a nice call from my agency today.

The contract I just left up has been put up for offer again for another six months. Now the reason my contract finished suddenly was cause I worked too much (amusing isn't it?) and they ran out of money. Apparently the new contract has a little work around to solve this problem.

They are offering the same position for less per hour.

Cause, you know, I like idea of working the same amount for less money.

I turned down my agency's offer to put me forward for the position again.

*gets sleep so he looks like he at least vaguely cares at another agency interview tomorrow*

[mood | tired]

So I don't have a job as of the end of tomorrow.

They have run out of money for my contract and I think they are rather embarrassed about the whole thing. Really, I don't care all that much because hey its a shitty job really that I was only doing to because they paid me lots and I needed the experience. Also my contract was supposed to be up June 30th, so I was already looking for other work.

But honestly, if you get your contractors to work more hours a week then the contract states (which I was cool with as I wanted the cash), it's a good idea to work out that you can't pay them till the end of contract more then 2 days before the money runs out.

Tomorrow I get to show them all the work I was half way through that is due Friday that won't be done and can't be done by anyone else due to other contractual reasons. God, I just realised how fucked they are by all this.

*shrugs*

Sucks to be them.

P.S. I should clarify that the people I work for and with are actually decent people and good at their jobs. The problem seems to be stupid government rules about contractors and the fact my job is a full time position they will only hire someone 24 hours a week to do.
