Writer's Block: Being Another Creature Jul. 26th, 2008 @ 01:38 am

If you could be any creature, any mobile life form at all, which would it be and why?

I usually ignore these but I loved this one. I don't think I could pick just one lol...big cat (like panther or tiger),orca,horse,wolf...if I had to make one choice it'd be bald eagle, I've always wanted to fly. Or if extinct animals count, Quetzalcoatlus, like my icon.

If I had my preference I'd be an Animorph, like in the book series. I know it's classed as a kids' series but I'm addicted lol. It's about five teens who get the power to morph into different animals and wind up fighting a war against a race of alien slugs that are taking over people's bodies. Anyway then I could morph and morph back and do different animals at different times.

Comcast and appeals Sep. 10th, 2007 @ 03:33 pm
I hope my net is fixed for good, it started acting up last night but was fixed when I got home from work. I hope it was Comcast and not the computers themselves.

Friday is my bus hearing; it was supposed to be last week but there was a ride mix up. I wouldn't be so anxious to keep the paratransit if the regular bus went to Lynwood but it doesn't, and I'm really uncertain how I'd do with bus schedules. I've taken one leg trips but not complex multileg transfer trips.

Also mad at the state government for not giving more funding grrrrr!

I don't know if I talked about my birthday, which was Aug 23, or not. I got to go see the CSI exhibit...it was nice though I wish there had been a way to do all three crime scenes. Afterward we were going to go out to eat but a nasty storm started partway to Red Lobster and we had to turn back. The area was pounded with hurricane force winds that night and we saw a transformer blow and the grass catch fire. Apparently downed lines and such were quite common although our power only flickered. A building had part of its roof torn off and the lady who does my eyebrows got a pole dropped on her car while at the salon though she drove it home after the pole was removed. I know they call Chicago the windy city but that's icky even for us.

Power musings Jul. 31st, 2007 @ 03:44 pm
Anyone else think people in the developed world have gone soft in a way? Our ancestors did fine with no electricity for a long time, and now a little power outage makes us-me included-nuts. We had a small one last night that brought on these thoughts lol Now I'm tired cause the noise of things going off woke me up, I went back to sleep for a while and then got woke up when things came on again.

Even just computers; as long as they work fine you're okay, but when they go down you're screwed big time. Happened last week at the library; checkout could be done by hand and I could shelve and straighten and stuff but nothing else computer related really worked properly :(

I think we're gonna be in a heap of trouble if something ever takes out our electrictity and all our tech gadgets no longer work lol

Lately I've been looking around and never realized just how many blogs and networks and whatever are out there. I have a GreatestJournal and a JournalFen (which I need to update) besides my LJ, and MySpace and FaceBook...plus lately some niche ones like some pet sites and religious sites.

Maybe I just have a groups addiction, it's those I often like the most. I'm in them at most every place I'm at lol...plus my Yahoogroups. And no i don't keep up with them all, I really can't. I visit many of them a few times a month maybe rather than every day.

waaaaah I liked the cool weather and now it's hot again :(

Carnival... Jul. 8th, 2007 @ 11:48 pm
The village here had a carnival this weekend...not sure why they were celebrating the stone quarry or what about but it was called QuarryBlast and was right on the rim of the quarry...well just outside the fencing that keeps people from falling in and all that obviously. They had good weather for it but it was sure darn hot. I'm glad I went yesterday because it was even hotter today.

I love riding the rides but those games are money suckers lol...to win the big prizes you either have to be really good at them or play more than one round and they are so out to get as much money off you as they can. I got a few small prizes

I think my favorite ride was CliffHanger, which is designed to give the impression of hang gliding even though it does take you in a circle like the others. Arabian Nights, which had a long bench seat with roller coaster restraints and went around in an up and down circle, was also fun. Those two I rode three times lol. Zero G should be called Several G...did not go on it again because it flattened me too much and it wasn't easy to breathe. The mini-coaster (Dragon Coaster I think)was okay but I got banged around and now have a bruise, despite the operator wrapping and positioning a big towel to try and help me out. The scrambler was pretty fun too. Most of the rest were kiddie rides and a carousel...did that once.

I loved the petting zoo though I kinda felt bad for the animals in the heat. They did have lots of water and spray bottles to mist them down though, and two shelters for them to go under. There were two llamas, a calf, sheep, goats, two baby potbelly pigs, chickens, ducks and a rabbit. And those goats are relentless if you get a food cup lol...feed them and they mob you and keep following you for more. I even had one with front hooves up on my belly at one point.

Anyway when I finally got home I was exhausted from walking over and then walking around, but fortunately my sunburn is only mild. I forgot to ask where the sunblock was :( It's not painful though and it's only lightly red.

This afternoon me,my little cousins and the neighbor girl who's the same age as the older one, five, went in the neighbor's pool...it's not a big fancy one, just one of those smallish ones with the inflatable top but at least it's filtered and not a wading pool lol. Though I don't know how good that filter is, I still had stuff all over afterward...had to jump in the shower to clean off lol But it was still kinda fun and easy to stay cool. We're going to get one of our own sometime soon. The dogs should stay away because despite being half lab they aren't terribly fond of water and they have their own wading pool to splash in. Maybe that'll keep them from trying to use teeth or claws on it lol

» It's way too late to be up as it is
I'm on my own computer now, it's not brand new, like 9yrs old actually but runs acceptablly with XP installed...though not with two programs going at once, that slows it down terribly. It *is* better not having to compete for the other one. But are all older models this noisy? lol

I think I got that norovirus or norwalk or whatever's going around on Sunday...felt awful Sunday night but was better Mon morning and today.

it's darn COLD!!! been snowing a lot the past few days and the temps are dropping. Ick.
» The machines are revolting
This week has been interesting at work. Wednesday the computers, or rather the internet connections, both the patron ones and the library's systems were speeding up, slowing down, stopping...we think the lines were wet. The printer was also acting up, printing gibberish. The copier jammed for a bit as well. We copy the covers of some magazines and put the actual items behind teh counter; the patrons having to ask for them is supposed to cut back on stealing. Anyway, I and another lady were trying to get the copier working right and even though the paper appeared in right, it jammed anyway. And the unjamming process-mostly opening lots of doors-is complicated.

Things are mostly fixed now except the card catalog; it's going to need a whole new PC.

On the stealing subject, I think it's getting worse. They try to watch the kids they know steal books and after a while there's some process for banning them I think, but still it's hard to catch them. And some have been swiping magazines still in the binders we put them in. It's mostly the Young Adult ones too, the kids again...other than Star and possibly Sports Illustrated going missing a couple of times in adult. We're going to have to get a security system to go along with the new security guard....expensive but unfortuantely a necessity. The books aren't actually stolen as often as the magazines...a couple of the kids swipe the ones their parents don't want them checking out...there's this "urban fiction" genre that's definately adult stuff for one...it's kinda hiphop and the hood and homies and all that and they have a lot of sex...obviously the parents don't want the kids reading them, and the kids steal them so they can read them anyway. The magazines are what really irks me because it keeps happening all the time.

They have managed to cut down on the loud talking on the computers...enforcing the "one kid per PC" rule and changing the way computers are reserved has helped a lot.

Christmas party's tommorow, or really, tonight. Nothing fancy, just a potluck and a grab bag.
» Media journal
I decided to start another journal for all my show reviews, book thoughts, fanfic, ect....anyone who's a fandom friend can friend it as well as this one. http://www.ba23reviews.livejournal.com.

I'll be very glad when the new library's built, this one leaks. The books are usually okay but the carpet gets wet in a lot of places. And papers have to be watched lol.

Man it's COLD out here!
» Murphy's Law
I think work today was an example of Murphy's Law in action. Everyhting was broken in the morning. The check in/check out system...the patron computers were being updated so they weren't really broke. The kids' read-a-long system is down, the computer card catalog computer is down...briefly there was a problem with the patron printer. The check-in/out thing was fixed by just after I clocked in, and the patron computers were done updating pretty much. But the kids thing and card catalog are still out. Last week the public copier broke but it's fixed, I think.

I hope tomorrow's better.
» Yay
My boss at the library told me today I'll be starting to work there five days a week instead of just three. I'll quit JoAnn now...will kinda miss it, but the library job is what I've wanted all along. I'm happy about it :)

*hopes powercycling ComCast modem solved the reset problems it's been having last night and today*
» Stuff
Am I the only one who doesn't actually post much in their journal itself? I just prefer to post opinions and such in the groups made for the topics because I have a wide array of friends here and there's no way we're all going to share the same viewpoints.

I do like that we can all get along despite differences and just have fun chatting about whatever it is I have in common...usually TV show fandoms lol. I think it's like message boards, it's better when they have a place to post possibly controversial topics into so those of us who choose not to get involved with them can avoid it.

Anyway, I'm still working two jobs; the other library page hasn't left yet-not sure what's up with that, possibly she didn't get into school where she wanted or something. But whatever it is, my boss'll let me know when they're ready to up my hours. And I did get an award at JoAnn, most employees eventually get them; they're called silver scissors and go on our button-shaped nametags lol. Get enough silver scissors and you get a gold scissors.

I have a cat again; I've missed having one around the house lol. She's a 7 to 9mo old tortishell persian or persian mix that was dubbed Chloe after a lot of discussion about names...no long hair yet; I know it's gonna be a nightmare if it grows longer later; she'd rather play with the brush than let herself be brushed lol. The dogs are fascinated by her even though they're seperated by a gate...they have staring contests with the cat lol. She *does* have a tendancy to demand to play when we're trying to sleep, but at least it's not every night lol.

I hope we don't get a lot more rain tonight, it's flooded enough around here already. The forest is swamped in many places. And people had home damage in other places between the winds and rain. It's supposed to storm more toward morning...yuck.

I can't believe it's October already...the furnace even got prepared today. We have a repairman neighbor who's nice enough to help us nurse this old thing along...it's gonna cost a bundle when it gives out and needs replacing.

I gotta get going now; I'm always up too late anyway. Or at least longer than I should be up.

» DSL
I finally got DSL although I meant to post this a week ago. Apart from a couple of days where things were down and the fact that SBC doesn't seem to know what they're doing with phone lines, it didn't go too badly. I do love the faster Internet now. Way better than dialup.

I have no idea what's up for the holiday weekend, guess I'll just have to wait and see.
» Grrrrr!
I'm not having too hard a time at work (the craft/fabric store). I'm more at ease with customers than I'd feard I'd be although I'm still getting used to the store layout and oftne have to direct them to someone else.

But can they please just PUT THINGS BACK IN THE RIGHT SPOT??? The button section isn't *too* bad most of the time, but the thread and ribbon sectiosn are making me CRAZY!!! I know they often look alike and if someone's in a hurry, they're not going to look closely, but it's annoying having to spend so much time just straightening up so much before I can start stocking.

I have been told I'm good though and I'm getting good at finding things even before anyone's offically told me where they go. (And the handlheld scanner can often do it if I can't.)
» Job
I meant to write about it earlier but now I'll be working a couple days a week at JoAnn Fabrics, which is a sort of craft store for those who don't know. I really wanted the petstore job I applied for but at least I'll have money coming in. I have orientation today and something was said about starting tomorrow or Friday. I'm a little nervous after not having worked in a while but i'm sure I'll get used to it.
» (No Subject)
The SS hearing went okay, though I don't know yet whether it'll go full disability or stay SSI. The Best Buy thing might come into play later on, after the store opens...have I said that already or not?

I'm not happy because of possibly having to switch ADHD meds just because Medicare doesn't want to cover Strattera. Fortunately, if the new one doesn't work, we'll either pay cash or see if Lilly has a program to help, the way Merck does. At least though, I'm not sick anymore, the cold's about gone. Mom might've gotten it, it went into a respitory infection but she's getting better. Right now, my right arm hurts a little. I got the hemangioma removed and now I've taken off the bandaid. There's little chance anything bad will show on the biopsy (they called it "just in case") but I'll know in two weeks for sure.

I think by the time the state elections are held, I'm going to be soooo sick of the constant network political ads. Blech.

*cries* I want Bones back...boooooo Fox for yet another hiatus! I know I've got CSI:NY until them but still....lol.

*has lots of reading to do because so many books have come in now that the library system is fixed*
» (No Subject)
Lawyer visit went okay this morning, the hearing is next week...I'm happy with the current situation, having the SSI and looking for a job but others in the family think the full disability would be better. I suppose there's a chance it might stay the same too, just hard to say.

I'm just getting annoyed with everyone saying I can't work when they don't know at all what I can do becuase they've never seen me at a job. I did apply during high school and college but probably part of it was not putting my whole heart into it,combined with being busy studying and not having a parent that drove who could get me there(or having my own license...really should have taken driver's ed.)

Now, no one seems to get the fact that job hunting can be hard sometimes. Sure it's been almost a year but not everyone finds work right away. I can't look in a really wide area because of the license issue...the buses are there but it'd probably take me forever to figure out all the transfers and such.(I think I could if I wanted to bad enough, I'd just rather have a close workplace that I had several options on getting to.)Plus, mnny jobs these days require experience that I won't get until I can get back in school.

I know there probably are difficulties related to the ADHD and the high functioning autism thing but I don't see a need to just sit back and accept anything. You have problems, you work around them and find ways to solve them. I won't do anything to mess up the case because the money would be really helpful and I can still work part time as long as I don't make too much, but I wish they'd quit saying these things and just let me keep looking and find a job on my own. (well with the help I'm getting already that is)Then I'd be able to prove that I can work and that there's no problem at all with me supporting myself and having a job. Maybe not full time now, I'd rather start part time and try full time later on, when I've worked for a while and can know how it's going.

I know the issues are there and they have to be worked around but I refuse to accept that I can't do everything normal people do and I just wish someone would give me a chance to show that it's the truth.

The cold's a little better but it's not gone completely yet :( Still dealing with stuffy/runny nose and coughing.
» Colds and interviews
Best Buy wants to set up an interview with me, hopefully I'll find out when on Monday.

Right now though, I've got a cold :( The cough and stuffy nose are bearable I think but I hate this constant feeling of needing to sneeze! argh!

I'm alone at the moment, the rest of the family went to a cousin's 4th b-day party. So, just me and the dogs. I'm thinking of popping in a video but not sure which one. (the DVD player's in the kitchen, usually watch it while eating)

*goes off wondering if she can either find something to stop the sneeze feeling or if she'd just do it already*
» Another job possibility
the job developer called today and said that one of the libraries I applied at before might be looking for someone now-they'd said to call back in January, and the library person said after things were discussed that my application would be disussed at some kind of meeting...maybe they'll ask for an interview or something.

I know I've got to find a job sooner or later but after being unemployed for so long, getting back into being gone during the day (it'll only be part time, a few days a week but still)makes me a little nervous. Well that and hoping I do a good job.

'Course I'll have to cut the computer time back if I have to get up really early to start work but I stay up way too late at night anyway. I can't seem to get off this thing before 1am, ugh.
