| Holy carp! This flickr set documents an experiment to send a cosmic radiation detector up into space. They sent a camera along for the ride and it took some great photos. | ||||||||

I was walking to the supermarket last night when I saw a dazed looking dude walking down the sidewalk. He asked me if he could use my phone and I noticed he had blood on his face. I asked him if he was alright and what had happened. He had been car jacked by some thugs who had pulled a gun on him and pistol whipped him. I called 911 and while I was on the phone to them another bleeding-faced kid walks up from the other direction, his buddy, who was also somehow involved. Apparently the second guy was trying to sell the thugs a bag of weed and they jacked him, then jacked his car from the first guy who was waiting in it. I waited around for the cops who took ages to arrive, then went on my way. It was kind of exciting, and although this armed grand theft auto happened a block from my house, it doesn't worry me too much. I'll just be careful who I try to sell pot too. Just kidding. The whole episode did, however, throw a spanner in the works of my plan to bake grugeres last night. It was too late by the time I got home. They will have to wait until tonight. Mmmmmmm grugeres. |

![]() The World Values Surveys were designed to provide a comprehensive measurement of all major areas of human concern, from religion to politics to economic and social life and two dimensions dominate the picture: (1) Traditional/ Secular-rational and (2) Survival/Self-expression values. These two dimensions explain more than 70 percent of the cross-national variance in a factor analysis of ten indicators-and each of these dimensions is strongly correlated with scores of other important orientations. |

Awesome weekend spent at Doe Bay with inlaws. Will definitely be returning for more sauna/spa relaxation, delicious wholesome food, fantastic views/environment and general pleasantness. What a fantastic place. |

Amid an seemingly endless string of illness, cancer, daycare drama and general S.A.D.ness, a couple of good things stand out: 1) Wire Tap. I literally LOLed while listening to this show on NPR last night. Mostly pretty amusing, with a decent sprinkling of hilarious. 2) The grugere from Columbia City Bakery. That's probably not the same recipe that they use, but however they make it, these little cheese puffs are heaven in three mouthfuls. |

Last week I was on 'manny' duty in London, and spent a lot of time taking Olivia around sightseeing and wandering the backstreets of SW1. This is her enjoying the Chelsea Physic Garden, a 400+ year old apothecarist's collection of medicinal plants from around the world. She'll be a botanist yet. Other highlights included lounging in Hyde Park, visiting the amazing Natural History museum, seeing friends and getting lost in Hampstead Heath. |

One of the best things about Mrs Butter-whip is that she has a cassette player. All my old mixes and mix tapes are on regular rotation. This morning, after dropping Olivia off at Mama Rain's I popped in the classic 'Sans Les Mot' b/w 'Avec Les Mot', and this gem came on: I screamed myself hoarse to one of the best pop love songs ever. Fitting too, for a special day. |

I'm looking forward to more days like Saturday in the coming months. We took Cinnamon and Nutmeg for a long walk down to Denny Blaine and then laid around outside in the sun. Olivia loved not being bundled up and was having a great time rolling around on the rug. |

If you live in Washington state, there's a good chance that your non-recyclable trash ends up here. Even if you live in Oregon, British Columbia or Alaska, your trash might end up here too. 300 rail cars of trash arrive here daily. Take a look at that scar in the landscape. But then zoom out on the map until you get some perspective for the size of it, compared to its watershed (trashshed?). Interesting. I need to read Underworld again. |

Yahoo reports that 'Obama wins Georgia primary' but fails to report what the estimated proportion of votes he received is. "The 87 delegates at stake in Georgia's primary were divided between the two candidates in rough proportion to the votes." Given that statement, wouldn't the margin of victory be somewhat more important to report than who 'won' or 'lost' that state? Am I missing something here, or is the media really this stupid (or thinks we're this stupid)? |

Rain I can hear you making small holes in the silence rain If I were deaf the pores of my skin would open to you and shut And I should know you by the lick of you if I were blind the something special smell of you when the sun cakes the ground the steady drum-roll sound you make when the wind drops But if I should not hear smell or feel or see you you would still define me disperse me wash over me rain Hone Tuwhare 1922-2008 |

Last night on my commute home I was the victim of a road-rage hate crime. Yes - hate crime. Let me explain. I was riding down McClellan from Beacon Hill towards Rainier Ave. I know this is kind of a crazy idea, especially at dusk, on wet roads, during rush hour (and after what happened I think it may have been the last time i ever do that). Just as I was approach the bottom of the hill, and therefore approaching my top speed, maybe 30 mph or so, a black SUV pulls out of the Schucks parking lot into my path. I pulled the brakes hard and went into a skid on the wet road. I also yelled really loudly, loud enough that the woman driving the truck heard me and stopped moving. I managed to keep control and passed in front of her, glaring. She then had the gall to lay on her horn and start yelling at me. It's bad enough when someone nearly kills you and then blasts their horn, but the real kicker in this case was what she was yelling - "You f%$*ing redneck!!!" over and over and over. I can't see where she would have got the idea that I was a redneck (have you ever met a redneck on a roadbike?) apart from the fact that my skin was a lot paler than hers. Crazy. At least I guess i'm lucky that I can laugh at being racially categorized and insulted. |

It's been a long time since I wrote anything here. Things have been pretty busy, but probably not that busy that I couldn't have updated. I guess my priorities have been shifted all around. Having a baby is pretty amazing. She kills me with all her cute, so much that even after I occasionally have to put her down and walk away if she's being a pill, I can't stay mad for more than a minute or two. Sleeping through the night, rolling over, getting chubby little thighs - it's true what they say, they grow up so quickly. It's kind of crazy to think it's already three months. My new job is really enjoyable. I'm working on such an important, challenging problem and have the weight of our company's name to allow me to pull in some of the best people from outside to work with us. We are assembling a team of 10-20 players to put together a proposal for government funding to demonstrate going from algae to jet fuel economically. What's amazing is that the funding body is the DoD! Meanwhile the Bush administration is trying to wedge coal-to-liquid fuels into the alternative energy section of the Energy Bill. Turning coal into gasoline puts seven times as much CO2 into the air than burning crude oil based gas. But that's another story. So somehow I've ended up in the shady world of defense contracting. Wierd. Happy times all round. The holidays are feeling like they'll be different this year, more significant for various reasons. We are off to Florida for more than a week, which is going to be AWESOME, apart from flying with O. We all could do with some vitamin D. |
