Blackadderness
Yesterday I got a slightly later start than I wanted--since Dan beat me to the shower, I ended up getting a ride into the office with Mom. I then realized I wasn't sure what to work on. Heidi was gone at the Winter Weekend in Louisington (courtesy of Graham) and I hadn't yet made contact with Brian, so I ended up watching a whole bunch of Blackadder, catching me up with Dan. I fit in nine (full) half-hour episodes, I think, to complete the first two serieseses. And I ended up with the theme song absolutely stuck in my head for the rest of the day. I even found a string quartet arrangement and the first page of the piano solo version online. I really must have the sheet music so I can sing it--wouldn't it be hilarious if I listed it on my jury sheet next semester?? I think I like it a bit too much--particularly how the baritone sings it for the first series end credits.
Dan and I ended up fixing chili for dinner, which I quite liked, though I'm not sure my dad is quite comfortable with having such radical spices as cinnamon in his chili (I wanted to put cocoa powder in, but Dan wasn't terribly keen on the idea, though both my parents were surprisingly comfortable with that idea).
Then we did some chores. Dan painted the tops of the steps to the basement while I did some touching up elsewhere. When we were done, much to my dismay, Dad told us we shouldn't wait for Sunday to do some chores, but rather make a practice of grabbing something to eat after returning from work and then getting on some painting for an hour or so. Just what I need--more mundane labor every day. It looks like 27 chores are left, if you count each location of the same action as a different one.
We all finally relaxed to some Blackadder (Dan hooked up his computer to the TV and got a better-than-TV picture--spiffy!) and Jack & Coke.
This morning, I beat Dan to the shower, but--alas! I delayed our departure, as I didn't start early enough. I then realized we have two showers...intriguing...
When I started work today, I could barely remember how to do what I was supposed to be doing. I think I eventually figured out half of it by the time I quit today. Let me tell you, modifying META-tags, wading knee-deep in html, is no treat.
Well,
crazyspinto tagged me, so here goes nothing:
Four people currently living most likely to produce an interesting & stageable brand new opera plot & libretto (ie, you would go to see it!):
1. Joss Whedon
2. Bruce Springsteen [If he still feels like writing--his songs read like poetry (I can't stand his music, actually)]
3. Jeffrey McDaniel [Poet of hilarity who would never be dull]
4. Fran Walsh [She can write screenplays and lyrics wonderfully]
Four books you could buy at a regular bookseller's like Borders, Barnes & Noble or on Amazon, that, if re-worked, would be most likely to produce an interesting & stageable opera libretto, (ie, you would go to see it):
1. Tess of the d'Urbervilles (by Thomas Hardy) [Have you read that? It's practically a libretto made (entirely!) novelworthy!]
2. Frankenstein (by Mary Shelley) [Already being done, I believe, but...I still came up with it]
3. Sphere (by Michael Crichton) [I think it would be essentially stageable, if a few elements pose problems--squid, all the water, some of the writing, etc.]
4. The Hobbit (by J.R.R. Tolkien) [I couldn't think of anything else--I really need to read more books...]
I'm tagging
funandfolly,
nachemdeb,
oracular_echo, and mezzogregory (if he's reading this).
So, can you believe there's going to be a LOTR musical?! I'm serious! I really don't know what to think...
I'll post edits if anything interesting happens later (not bloody likely). Tschau!
Edit: Well, I do have a few things to report, after all! Who knew?
First, the dinner left behind while the 'rents were at Bible Study was cilantro-infused, yet, after I heated a plate up, it was edible! Miraculous!
Dan blasted the first song of a Dave Matthews Band concert, and then I went downstairs and blasted Elektra's opening monologue from my DVD with Rysanek and Varnay.
("Was she making out with a statue?"
"Yup. Pretty much."
"She must have issues..."
"Yes--she suffers from the eponymous Elektra complex.")
I then went on to play some excerpts of Varnay's Brünnhilde (from the 1953 Bayreuth Ring with Krauss), but I was interrupted with a prompt to paint. Dan attempted to paint the baseboards, and I couldn't figure out anything I could do, as he had the paint for any project worth spending time on that night without being overwhelmingly large. However, the brush and baseboards were not cooperating, and so we looked at the mantle, and were unable to figure out which color paint to use for a while (it has been painted over several times and is now half-gray-half-off-white). We gave up and watched two episodes of Family Guy from the first season, but they weren't the greatest. So, we failed miserably in the chore department tonight. A slovenly disgrace!!!
I ended up playing my cello--it's been a while. Yay for (some) Haydn, Bruch, and Bach! I seem to be getting more sound out of it / digging in more than I used to. I'd practice more, but I'd have to get a locker in Humanities and have the time and will to on top of studies and voice practice. Nyeh.
I forgot to mention the mark I left on pop culture earlier today--I edited a Wikipedia entry. The Spinto page suggested a singer of the fach is just a pushed lyric, which is not what is supposed to be involved in the associated repertoire. I made changes to my satisfaction. (Are they to yours, CrazyS? I didn't touch anything beyond the first paragraph--repertoire is sooo subjective!)
