Questions: I was wondering when you guys paint with your mentrual blood do you water it down kind of like water colors or strait on? do you use brushes or fingers.
All these questions because i just became brave enough (I am scared of ripping out my iud with the suction of the cup) to use my menstrual cup and I thought i would mark that little milestone with a little painting.
Thanks! |

Two blood/ ink pictures, one from last month and one from a few days ago. ( Behind a cut because they are a bit large. )I've never tracked my periods on a calender. I've gotten the impression that this is something that most girls/ women do, but I just can't. I'm very unorganized I suppose, but I've never had a period sneak up on me. There is always some light pink spotting beforehand when I go to the bathroom, and I've never gotten it in the middle of the night and woken up unexpectedly in a pool of blood. It sort of bothers me, I feel like I should be tracking it somehow, but i don't see the point because it changes from month to month, especially if I've taken a large dose of vitamin C to ward off a cold or something like that. I made a Menstrual Art folder in my DA gallery so all my blood art pictures would be together. I thought I had done more, but there are only 8. The first one was posted over two years ago, I should have dozens by now. It seems like such a waste to me that so many periods went by without my doing something with them. I could have made art but I just flushed all that blood down the drain. It really is disappointing to me, but I'm hoping that having them all in one group where I can see them will inspire me to make more. |

more more more! Alright, thanks to your encouragement and support I have finished my second painting. This is a re-make of my original highlighter-drawing of myself being killed by a bear. I think it's better in some ways, but lacking in others. I absolutely suck at doing hands. Maybe I'll add more grass around them to hide them a little better. The blood looks great, especially in real life. Super gory! I changed the bear to a brown bear b/c I originally didn't have a brown highlighter and there aren't really polar bears in regular forests, though the white would've looked awesome with all that blood.. oh well. I have a lot of ideas for my third one, and so I'm thinking I just might have to go with this theme until it gets old or annoying. Right now it's still fun for me (though my roommate was really disgusted when he saw me use the blood and realized I wasn't lying about it!) I don't have any fresh blood so I'll have to do this last one quickly or wait until next month! Perhaps I'll just work on the painting(s?) then add the blood.. when it comes. ha ha. OH! I just realized I'm out of canvas.. so it'll have to wait I guess. Here are the two next to each other. Thanks for all the comments and support! I'll be sure to update here with any future attempts! what NOT to do on your period? Hello friends! I stumbled upon this community today as I was looking for information about using menstrual blood to paint with. It's an idea I've been interested in for a long time. I promised a friend of mine I'd make a painting for him with my period blood, and decided that today was the day! I decided to start a set of paintings about what not to do on your period. This idea basically started as a joke when I was invited to go camping but heard rumors that bears can smell the menstrual blood and attack (still not sure if this is true or not!) I was at work so I did a quick self portrait with highlighters and pens of myself being killed by a bear titled "Don't go camping on your period". I plan on reproducing it with paint (and menstrual blood of course!) and with more blood in the correct areas. :) (My sister actually had this posted in her office for months with many mixed responses!) I also plan a third self portrait which will probably be me being mauled by dinosaurs ("Don't time travel on your period") but I'm not quite decided yet. My second self portrait, but first painted one is titled "Don't go swimming in shark infested waters whilst on menstrual cycle" I know they're kind of gory, but they're supposed to be silly at the same time. (And please excuse the photo quality, all I have is my cell phone camera.) I've had some traumatic experiences associated with my menstrual cycle which I'll probably work on later, but these are meant to have a more cartoony/lively/color-book feel. I used menstrual blood mixed with a little bit of red paint (so it wouldn't be too brown when it dried) on all the parts with red- the sunset, the shark's mouth, and of course in the water around my bathingsuit. This is only my second real attempt at painting since high school (7 years!) and I'm pretty happy with it, but I'd love any comments/suggestions/critiques/ect! I bring life to this community! It's been a while since I posted here. I actually have some more menstrual art I did a while back to share. Vagina Flowers: Ah, for the sake of being more active on here, I'll go ahead and share a spontaneous period blood painting I did, too. (It's neat to see how the texture and movement of the blood comes out.) It's nothing special, but it was fun to make! I ought to start sharing regularly. :D I'll be sure to post next time. It's great to be in a supportive community that doesn't go "OH GOD YOU DID... WHAT? YOU'RE STRANGE." I enjoy menstrual art and I'm glad to be in a group of people that understands and appreciates it, too. Current Mood: artistic |

First attempt I've been wanting to do this for a while, and finally decided to do it. I collected my blood today, and this evening, I painted with it. It was really a special moment. Of course, I did it on the bathroom floor, and my Mom wondered what was taking me so long in there. Me: "Uh...I'm painting..." (I can't draw worth beans, so this is weird) Mom: "Painting what, yourself?" Me: "Noooo...no, um, I'll show you later." Mom: "Okay, whatever!" So I did. Me: "Hey, look what I did" Mom: "Oooh, that's pretty, what did you use?" Me: "Guess!!!" (I'd mentioned menstrual art once before) Mom: "NO! Oh my GOSH!" Me: "Hey, there's nothing wrong about it. It's normal." Mom: "I don't know...isn't that a little... weird?" HAHAHaahahahahahaa!!!!!!! ME? WEIRD? Hahahahahahaaaa!!! So this is what I did. I'm not perfectly happy with the middle bit, but whatever. Like I said, really, I can't draw, so this is quite out of the ordinary. :) Now I can fix things for next time. :D Take care, Christine |

Looking for menstrual art for a (free) magazine Hi, Please excuse this rather spammish post, but I'm trying to get together a menstrual online magazine, and would love to feature some menstrual art and articles on menstrual art in some of the issues (as well as for cover artwork). We're still in the planning stage, but we have a live journal community where we're discussing this, so if anyone is interested, please come over and check it out. http://community.livejournal.com/vermilion_mag :) Current Mood: hopeful |

Ink marker and blood and watercolor pencil. I've been trying to use more blood and less of other colorings (it seems more personal that way), but it seems blah with only brown. Next month, I will try to scan whatever picture I make before the blood is dried. Current Mood: tired |

hey girls I have never myself actually tried blood art but i do find it very fascinating and beautiful. I am doing a project for my anthropology class using still pictures, recorded sound, and video and the topic i have chosen is blood art. I am looking for someone to interview for my project. I am in California but if there is a way to do it over the phone or online that also may work even if it is just over a microphone and or webcamera. Please e-mail me (mcarll@ucsc.edu) if you are at all interested or have any questions about me or the project. i would be forever grateful. Thanks so much and hope to hear from you soon. --Megan Current Mood: hopeful |

henna paste & menstrual blood? I'm going to be painting henna designs on my hands soon and I was wondering if anyone in this community has ever tried mixing their blood with henna paste? I'm just curious to know if it would affect the mixture or outcome in any drastic way. |

menstrual calendars for 2008 A woman who lives in Barcelona messaged me through Myspace earlier and asked me if I would be interested in purchasing a menstrual calender that she had created. Not one to ignore subversive uterine art, I went to her website and found her designs (and her artist statement) to be quite refreshing. I think I might purchase one as an early Xmas present to myself, provided she doesn't drown me in shipping costs. Hooray for the steady, progressive elimination of taboos! Viva la menstruacion ! |
