Wow. That is amazing. I can totally see an oversized, framed version of that on my wall. The b&w, lighting and closeness really emphasizes the great shapes of these petals. The blurred flower in the background really balances the piece and sets the mood nicely. Sweet work.

The show comes down this Friday. Reactions have been very good, thanks. I just submitted work for a digital art show in LA. I'll find out on Friday if I made it into that.

This is just gorgeous.
It has such lovely textures, the "don't touch or I shall be ruined" delicacy of the petals with the roughish texture of the stem poking through.
Have you tried flipping it left-to-right? There's something about the composition that makes my eyes try ot pull the in-focus flower to the right, or open up some space to the left of it.
Do you get this lovely depth of field just from using a macro lens, or are you consciously setting a wide-open f-stop? I have a problem getting a good DOF with the digital. I also miss the bokeh that my old hasselblad has, it's like sparkly cream.

Yeah I tried flipping it, the change it makes is you see the light instead of the plant (at least I do). The tendency is our (english-readers') eyes want to resolve from left to right so it feels weird and keeps pulling the eye back to the left.
The DOF is a result of working with the camera's software ... this is shot in low-light conditions and its default behaviour in that case is to increase the aperture. You can control it manually using aperture-priority but as I've said before I'll always go for the simplest solution.
Bokeh, what an interesting term. Every time you comment I learn something :)

The texture is amazing. The striation of the blooms and the fuzz of the stems make this picture one you can look at over and over, never catching the same detail at first glance twice. I don't know which make my mouth water more, your botanicals or nudes. Just keep posting both, please.

Hey you know plants pretty well, do they each have a meaning for you? Like when I see Calendula I see a pretty orange flower but also all the botanical info, ideas about radial symmetry, medical info, cultural info, the feeling of the place where the plant usually grows, and personal experiences with the plant ...

Yeah, I do the same with many plants. That's why I'm enjoying these pictures of yours. They're focused on the beauty of the plant/blooms structure for it's own sake. The abstraction from the real plant makes them new again to look at and rekindles some wonder.

I love the way flower petals echo certain aspects of human skin. It really shows much better in b&w than in color.
