The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils is praying for peace and harmony among all people of good will during the World Youth Day activities in Sydney.

President Ikebal Patel sent out a statement this week in which he extended "sincere greetings to the Catholic community of Australia on behalf of the Muslims of Australia."

He continued, "I take this opportunity on behalf of the Muslims of Australia to also extend our good wishes to all Australians of all faiths on this auspicious occasion of World Youth Day and pray for peace, harmony and goodwill among all Australians and peoples all over the world.

"We also take this occasion as Australian Muslims to welcome His Holiness Pope Benedict as well as all other pilgrims to Australia."

Patel also mentioned that he is "particularly proud" that the Catholic Church accepted the offer of the Malek Fahd Islamic School in Sydney to host 350 pilgrims during the festivities.

Some Muslim school students will take part in serving the pilgrims, and the school will hold an interfaith event during the week.

On Thursday, Benedict will meet with 40 representatives of other faiths including Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist and Hindu leaders.

More than 340,000 Muslims reside in Australia.

Father Mark Podesta, a World Youth Day spokesman, said the involvement of Islamic schools "is an opportunity to show the rest of the world that people of different backgrounds and different beliefs can live alongside one another in peace and goodwill and harmony."

I hope with all my heart that he's right.

May our Catholic youth be shining example of Christian charity to Ozzie Muslims, and everyone else Down Under as well.

It turns out Jesse Jackson whispered something even worse than his desire to cut off Barack Obama’s manhood.

On an unaired portion of the tape, Jackson uses a vile racial epithet.

It turns out that what he actually said was: “See, Barack been, um, talking down to black people on this faith-based – I wanna cut his nuts out. … Barack – he’s talking down to black people -- telling n[igger]s how to behave.”

Unfortunately for the Rev, he didn't know that his mic was hot when he said them. Lulz ensued as Jackson shared his true feelings about Muad'dib with the entire Fox viewing audience.

TOLERANCE ALERT! The evil, biased Republican propaganda machine at the Fox News affiliate in Atlanta reports on the latest incident of Folks Just Like You 'N' Me™ murdering their kids:

A Georgia man appeared in court Monday on charges he killed his own daughter for disgracing his family.

Chaudhry Rashid, wearing a red jumpsuit and shackles around his ankles, went before Chief Judge Daphne Walker at the Clayton County Magistrate Court where he was arraigned on a murder charge. [ ... ] The 25-year-old victim, Sandeela Kanwal, was wed in Pakistan in an arranged marriage. Police said Kanwal hadn't seen her husband, who lives in Chicago, for months.

According to police, there was "friction between father and victim" in the weeks leading up to the killing. Rashid had not spoken to his daughter in more than two months. Police said Rashid was so angered that his daughter planned to divorce her husband that he killed her after a heated argument at the family's home...

Police who arrived at the scene said they found Rashid's two sons at the end of the driveway and their father sitting behind a car smoking a cigarette. Officers said that Rashid appeared "distraught and possibly mournful" and told police "my daughter is dead" when they arrived.

After entering the home, Kanwal's body was discovered in the doorway of a bedroom, cold to the touch, officials said.

A police report said that there were possible "ligature marks" indicating strangulation on the victim and noted that an iron and cord had been found near her body. A necklace was also found on a table downstairs, according to the report.

Rashid was taken to the Clayton County jail where he reportedly confessed to strangling Kanwal.

Hmmm, now what major religion is known for its "honor killings"? Could be be the Quakers? The Unitarians? The Rastafarians? Or could it be The Faith That Must Not Be Named®?

One of the main reasons that I love manga is the adaptability of the artform. Besides being pure entertainment, manga can and are produced for use as textbooks, instruction manuals, and propaganda. One example of the last-mentioned (in a benevolent sense) is a new manga published by (believe it or not) the United States Navy. The manga, entitled Manga CVN 73, is a light-hearted look at daily operations aboard USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN-73), the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier that is replacing USS KITTY HAWK (CV-63) as America's forward-deployed carrier at our base in Yokosuka, Japan. The story in the manga is an easy and fun read about an American sailor of Japanese ancestry who makes his first visit to Japan as a member of the GW's crew. The "propaganda" angle of the book really more like public relations, being less about the mission and combat capabilities of the ship and more along the lines of "look, folks, nothing to be afraid of here". (GEORGE WASHINGTON is the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to be homeported in Japan, and, as such, has become something of a magnet for controversy — hence the manga.) The military function of the ship is definitely soft-pedaled; the action in the story is limited to flight ops, firefighting, and the like, with the bulk of the story centering on the daily lives of the Japanese-American hero character, his black buddy, and their winsome blonde sempai. (As a former carrier sailor, I can attest to the general accuracy of the book's depiction of life at sea; unlike the ship in the CVN 73 manga, however, we had no hot babes aboard the good old ENTERPRISE — the Navy had a "no chicks at sea" rule back in those days.) Published by Commander, Naval Forces Japan (CFNJ), Manga CVN 73 clocks in at a respectable 200 pages, and is aimed at the 10-30 year old Japanese audience. I have no idea how to get a paper copy, but the manga is available online in both English and Japanese (pdf) for free.

Baby McBaby had his sixteen-month checkup today. He's in the 95th percentile for height and the 70th percentile for weight, has excellent blood iron, and is generally strong and above average in every way. He's into everything. is starting to talk, and Lord knows he eats enough. Thank you, God, for a healthy and happy baby.

Speaking of my kids, Child Zero, the inimitable Exchange Daughter Yuki, checked in via Skype yesterday. All is well as her takeover of Japan continues; she's doing well in school, has started her own personal-service business (foot massage, ladies only), and is still working part time as a tour guide at the shrines in Kyoto where she lives and goes to college. She's also in good health, and sends her greetings to all of you readers who knew her during her time with us here in Texas. Ol' bitpig is extremely proud of her.

Reason #4,586,221 That People Don't Like Cops comes from WMC-TV news in Memphis TN:

Exclusive video obtained by Action News 5 shows a Memphis police officer beating a suspect at 201 Poplar in an apparent case of police brutality.

The video, recorded February 12th, shows Duanna Johnson in the booking area at the Shelby County Criminal Justice Center after an arrest for prostitution. The tape clearly shows a Memphis police officer walk over to Johnson - a transsexual - and hit her in the face several times.

"Actually he was trying to get me to come over to where he was, and I responded by telling him that wasn't my name - that my mother didn't name me a 'faggot' or a 'he-she,' so he got upset and approached me. And that's when it started," Johnson said.

Johnson said the officer was attempting to call her over to be fingerprinted. She said she chose not respond to the derogatory name the officer called her.

"He said, 'I'm telling you, I'm giving you one more chance to get up.' So I'm looking at him, and he started putting his gloves on, and seen him take out a pair of handcuffs," Johnson said.

The officer hit Johnson several times with the handcuffs wrapped around his knuckles. In the video, you can see the flash of the metal. The tape shows another officer holding Johnson's shoulders as she tries to protect herself. Source / video

Yes, these two cops are beating this poor person up because she's a trannie. I don't "get" transsexualism myself, but I don't have to: it's a free country, after all, and none of my beeswax. I'm not aware of any law against being a transsexual; last I heard, people are free to express their sexual nature in any lawful way they choose. Besides, the cops have no right to beat any suspect, especially not one that is seated and unarmed.

Of course, the transsexuality is just a side issue here. The real reason they're kicking this person's ass is because she "difrefpected dem in dey own howse". The cops in most cities are nothing more than a legally-sanctioned street gang — and, as do all gangsters, gangster cops infist on being "refpected". Any perceived "diss" is grounds for a good, old-fashioned lesson in Who's The Boss.

However. unlike real street thugs, the cops have badges and the legal authority to beat, gas, and kill you.

Don't get me wrong. I'm strictly a Law & Order kind of guy. The society I'd prefer to live in would be more like Singapore, complete with floggings and the noose for wrongdoers. However, in my opinion many American police officers are obstacles to law and order rather than its preservers. I have seen (and experienced) cops acting this way far too often during my own life — and I know many people who have seen and experienced bad cop behavior as well.

It's not that I'm a cop hater. A good cop is as close to a real-life superhero as you'll ever find. But for every selfless Sheriff Andy Taylor out there "protecting and serving" the public, there are a hundred fuckup Barney Fifes roaming the streets looking to prove what a badass they are by using their shirt-pocket bullet on you.

We do not need police as they currently exist. The Blue Gangs of ex-high-school bullies and 'roided-out psycho jocks we have now hurt the people more than they help. Instead, we need an unarmed civilian neighborhood watch à la Sir Bobby Peel, backed up by a professionalized, semi-military gendarmerie. By keeping civilian cops unarmed, and by restricting the use of force to professionally trained officers under UCMJ-like military discipline, we can hope to curtail crime — both street crime and the crimes committed by the police themselves.

TOLERANCE ALERT! Charlotte Gill of the London [UK] Daily Mail, 18th June 2008:

Two youths were seen wearing niqab-style [Muslim] face masks and wielding a sword after a 14-year-old boy was stabbed, locals have claimed.

One was heard to say 'I'm going to kill him' as the pair walked calmly down a residential street chatting at about midday yesterday. The schoolboy was knifed in the chest just yards away at 5pm on Tuesday. He collapsed in a pool of blood in front of drinkers outside a pub as they enjoyed an after work pint.

A terrified local, who saw the sword-wielding teens but did not want to be named, said: 'I saw two boys wearing Muslim women's headgear but normal clothes otherwise and you could see only their eyes. 'One of them was carrying a sword with a huge blade over a foot long which looked like something you would use to gut a lamb. 'I saw them and my heart was gone. I've never been so terrified. 'Although I could only see their eyes I could see their hands as well and they were two black boys, tall, probably about six feet and I would guess they were 16 or 17 years old.'

They were less than 50 yards from the Tabard Garden Estate in Southwark, South East London, when the boy was attacked after a row among teenagers on an astro-turf football pitch in a park. The pair were spotted by a number of locals going into a block of flats right by the scene of the stabbing. Another local who did not wish to be named said: 'They were just walking up the street calmly chatting in the middle of the day while they wearing masks and openly carrying a blade.

'I heard one say to the other "I'm going to kill him." It was completely unbelievable, I've never seen anything like it, what is this country coming to?

'I've lived in this area for years and have always felt safe, but not anymore. The government has to do something about this, they need to take some tough action because things are getting worse.'

Sorry, ma'am. The government is going to do nothing to protect you. They're afraid of being called racists.

Reason #1,001,001 I Love Japan: Ordinarily I'm against the death penalty except in cases where the plea was "guilty" — it's too easy to make a mistake and kill the wrong guy. But I'm happy today because Japan still has the death penalty and has used it to rid the human race of one of the lowest pieces of shit that ever existed: Tsutomo Miyazaki, the "killer Otaku". Agence France-Presse gives us the details:

Japan on Tuesday executed three people including notorious serial killer Tsutomu Miyazaki, a fetishist convicted of murdering four little girls and eating some of their bodies, officials said.

Miyazaki, 45, was nicknamed the "killer nerd" for his obsession with sexual cartoons and pornography. But defence lawyers contended he was mentally ill and could not be held fully responsible for his actions.

Japan is the only major industrialised nation other than the United States to apply the death penalty and has been stepping up the pace of executions, which enjoy wide public support.

"We are carrying out executions by selecting the people whom we can execute with a feeling of confidence and responsibility," Justice Minister Kunio Hatoyama told a news conference. Source

Monthly casualties in Iraq now come in slightly lower than a weekend with Anna Nicole Smith. According to a CNN report last week, for the entire month of May, there were only 19 troop deaths in Iraq. (Last year, five people on average were shot every day in Chicago.) With Iraqi deaths at an all-time low, Iraq is safer than Detroit -- although the Middle Eastern food is still better in Detroit.

Al-Qaida is virtually destroyed, surprising even the CIA [ ... ] Just this week, The New York Times reported that al-Qaida and other terrorist groups in Southeast Asia have all but disappeared, starved of money and support.

Indeed, if we had somehow stopped the 9/11 attack, we'd all be watching Mohammed Atta being interviewed on MSNBC, explaining his lawsuit against the Bush administration. Maureen Dowd would be writing columns describing Khalid Sheik Mohammed as a "wannabe" terrorist being treated like Genghis Khan by an excitable Bush administration. [ ... ] But liberals have only blind hatred for Bush -- and for those brute American interrogators who do not supply extra helpings of béarnaise sauce to the little darlings at Guantanamo with sufficient alacrity.

The sheer repetition of lies about Bush is wearing people down. There is not a liberal in this country worthy of kissing Bush's rear end, but the weakest members of the herd run from Bush. Compared to the lickspittles denying and attacking him, Bush is a moral giant -- if that's not damning with faint praise. John McCain should be so lucky as to be running for Bush's third term. Then he might have a chance.

Now, most of you know I'm not the President's biggest fan — but thank God he was the president when the Muzis hit New York. Can you imagine what the world would be like today if Al Gore had been in the driver's seat that September day instead of a grownup? Fort Worth would probably be a radioactive crater by now. Brrrr.

Anyway: President Bush and I have had our differences over the years, but I'll give him this: he's kept the bastards from flying any more G--D--- planes into any more G--D--- buildings. For that alone he deserves our appreciation.

By comparison, George McGovern, Michael Dukakis, Walter Mondale, Al Gore and John Kerry seem the very embodiment of presidential readiness and political moderation.

At least George McGovern was a real war hero.

For the record: despite his own war-hero status, I don't think John McCain is any good for the country either.

Textbooks at a private Islamic school in McLean [Virginia] teach students that it is permissible for Muslims to kill adulterers and converts from Islam, according to the findings of a federal investigation released Wednesday.

Other passages in the school's textbooks state that "the Jews conspired against Islam and its people" and that Muslims are permitted to take the lives and property of those deemed "polytheists" - a designation some extremists apply to members of virtually every other religion.

The passages were found in selected textbooks used during the 2007-08 school year by the Islamic Saudi Academy, which teaches 900 students in grades K-12 at two campuses in Alexandria and Fairfax and receives much of its funding from the Saudi government. *The authors of a 12th-grade text on monotheism write that "[m]ajor polytheism makes blood and wealth permissible," meaning that a Muslim can take with impunity the life and property of someone thought guilty of polytheism.

*A social studies text offers the view that Jews are responsible for the split between Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims: "The cause of the discord: The Jews conspired against Islam and its people. A sly, wicked person who sinfully and deceitfully professed Islam infiltrated [the Muslims]." Source

A Canadian human rights tribunal ordered a Christian pastor to renounce his faith and never again express moral opposition to homosexuality, according to a new report.

In a decision dated May 30 in the penalty phase of the quasi-judicial proceedings run by the Alberta Human Rights Tribunal, evangelical pastor Stephen Boisson was banned from expressing his biblical perspective of homosexuality and ordered to pay $5,000 for "damages for pain and suffering" as well as apologize to the activist who complained of being hurt. ... [T]he penalty could foreshadow the possible fate of the Rev. Alphonse de Valk, who also cited the biblical perspective on homosexuality in the nation's debate over same-sex "marriage" and now faces HRC charges.

Boisson wrote a letter to the editor of his local Red Deer, Alberta, newspaper in 2002 denouncing the advance of homosexual activism as "wicked" and stating: "Children as young as five and six years of age are being subjected to psychologically and physiologically damaging pro-homosexual literature and guidance in the public school system; all under the fraudulent guise of equal rights."

The activist, local teacher Darren Lund, filed a complaint, and the guilty verdict from Lori G. Andreachuk, a lawyer, was handed down Nov. 30, 2007.

In her opinion, Andreachuk wrote] "Mr. Boissoin and The Concerned Christian Coalition Inc. shall cease publishing in newspapers, by e-mail, on the radio, in public speeches, or on the Internet, in future, disparaging remarks about gays and homosexuals. Further, they shall not and are prohibited from making disparaging remarks in the future about … Lund or … Lund's witnesses relating to their involvement in this complaint. Further, all disparaging remarks versus homosexuals are directed to be removed from current Web sites and publications of Mr. Boissoin and The Concerned Christian Coalition Inc."

Andreachuk also ordered Boissoin to apologize for the original letter in the Red Deer Advocate and told the two "offenders" to pay $5,000. Source

As a monarchist, and one whose political philosophy is somewhat to the right of Genghis Khan, I am often accused of being a fascist. Laughably, of course; fascism is worship of the State, and no self respecting fascist would ever consider a God-worshiping Altar-and-Throne type like me for membership. However, there are those who do worship the State, and who consider civil rights something to be given and taken away by the State. Ironically, most of these people call themselves Liberals.

A Liberal, being one who considers individual liberty to be the ultimate good, would seem at first an odd candidate for inclusion in the cult of State power; yet, as both history and current events prove, people who profess the greatest dedication to free speech are often among the first to bring the hammer of State power down upon the scrotums of those whose speech is a little too free.

Case in point: Canada. Long considered a haven for those who love liberty, it is in fact a nation where speaking one's mind can get one in deep, deep trouble with the government. Here in Texas, USA, despite the iron-fisted dictatorial regime of Chimpy McBusHitler, one remains free to express one's opinion publicly on any subject, using any desired words, without fear of retribution from Big Brother. Not so in Alberta, Canada, however. There, the government has the power to punish those whose public opinions stray from those officially approved by the provincial government. The Human Rights, Citizenship, and Multiculturalism Act (Chapter H‑14) passed by the government of Alberta spells it out:

"No person shall publish, issue or display or cause to be published, issued or displayed before the public any statement, publication, notice, sign, symbol, emblem or other representation that

(a) indicates discrimination or an intention to discriminate against a person or a class of persons, or

(b) is likely to expose a person or a class of persons to hatred or contempt

because of the race, religious beliefs, colour, gender, physical disability, mental disability, age, ancestry, place of origin, marital status, source of income or family status of that person or class of persons." (Sexual orientation was added to the list of protected categories in 1992)

And who gets to decide which statements, publications, notices, signs, symbols, emblems or other representations are illegal? Why, the ever-lovin' Alberta Human Rights and Citizenship Commission, that's who!

Still think Canada is a paradise of freedom compared to the US? Imagine what would happen if the government of the State of Texas enacted a law regulating statements, publications, notices, signs, symbols, emblems or other representations of opinion? The news media would freak! The pundits would froth! The streets would be full of Commies, resinous hippie fellow-travelers, and legions of earnest white, middle-class dupes bellowing at the top of their lungs about "fascism!"

But when Alberta, Canada does it, no one cares. Why is that?


Anyway, with this in mind, I pose to my readers a question:

Do you believe

a) that a given government should have the power to punish those who make any statement, publication, notice, sign, symbol, emblem or other representation that indicates discrimination or an intention to discriminate against a person or a class of persons, or is likely to expose a person or a class of persons to hatred or contempt because of the race, religious beliefs, color, gender, physical disability, mental disability, age, ancestry, place of origin, marital status, source of income, sexual orientation or family status of that person or class of persons; or

b) that people are by right free to think, say, express, and publish their opinions, even if such opinions are discriminatory, hateful, contemptuous, racist, bigoted, sexist, ableist, ageist, classist, and/or intended to denigrate those of a given ethnicity, handicap, or sexuality, without fear of government punishment?

If your beliefs match option B more closely, then you are a true Liberal, and I salute you for your integrity. However, if your beliefs match option A more closely, then I submit to your that you are a hypocrite at best — and, as one who holds that the State should have the power to deny people their God-given civil rights — quite likely a fascist as well.

So which is it, kids? Do you really believe in freedom of speech, or are you just another closet KGB informer ready to turn in the family next door for treason? Who's really the fascist? You make the call!

An editorial in today's Waterbury [CT] Republican-American:

A sure way for artists to boost their careers is to outrage Christians. Their exhibits get national attention and acclaim, and when Christians object, journalists and atheists quickly defend the offensive artist's "constitutional right to artistic expression."

The scenario has played out countless times. A sampling: In 1989, the main attraction of a photographer's exhibit was a crucified Christ submerged in urine. 1999 brought a painting that showed an icon of the Virgin Mary blotted with elephant dung. In 2007, a Manhattan gallery exhibited a chocolate sculpture of a crucified Jesus, sans clothing. A prestigious New York City art school just concluded its annual show, which included sexually explicit paintings of a crucifix protruding from a man's rectum, rosaries around penises and a halo above a naked man with an erection.

Sigmund Freud would have a field day with these people, but in these and countless other instances like them, the goal was not to advance art or free speech, but offend Christians. It's all so cowardly, of course, since Christian outrage is very unlikely to escalate to violence.

But with each new anti-Christian exhibit, the level of public outcry and revulsion is more muted. Obviously, artists need a new strategy for showing their courage and conviction. How about incorporating Muslim symbols into your work? Show some guts. Jesus is passe; dunk Mohammed in urine, or insert crescents in body cavities. Make a name for yourself, but make sure your life and fire insurance are paid up.

TOLERANCE ALERT! Today's example of Tolerance takes us to open-minded Amsterdam, city of smokes, pancakes, and anything-goes gay sex. But wait! Are those members of the Religion Of Peace we see? Let's listen in on the fun!

Model Mike Du Pree was taking part in a fashion show to promote tolerance towards gay people when a gang of ten Muslim youths dragged him from the catwalk and beat him.

A right wing Dutch MP has called for the youths to be deported.

Mr Du Pree's nose was broken in the attack, which was motivated by homophobia. The fashion event was held on a public holiday marking the birth of Holland's late Queen Julianna. Newspaper Gay Krant reports that a bystander intervened as the model was being beaten and a fight erupted. Fashion show organiser Jennifer Delano told the paper that the atmosphere at the event was tense, and that the violence shows Amsterdam is no longer a tolerant city.

"Mike got dragged down by his arm," she said.

"They pinched him, he defended himself and then the guys of immigrant background started to hit him."

Police arrived on the scene but it is unclear whether the ten homophobic Muslim youths were arrested or charged. Source

Scary! Good thing that this sort of thing happens only every now and then, amirite?. Otherwise we might have to start doubting the fact that most European Muslims are quiet, nonviolent, open-minded folks who would never dream of beating the shit out of a homosexual just because of his or her sexual orientation. For the first time since the arrests of 18 terrorism suspects in 2006, a court heard on Thursday the men describe the ideology behind their alleged scheme to attack Canada. In wiretaps played at the trial of a 20-year-old man, his co-accused spoke at length about their "global fight" to "get rid of the oppressors." They discussed the benefits of martyrdom and the need to retaliate against foreign soldiers fighting in Afghanistan, even if on Western soil. "You harm one Muslim, the whole Muslim [nation] has to defend that person," the accused leader of the group said.

None of the suspects can be identified because of a publication ban.

In another recorded conversation, the alleged leader explained, "If they're your enemy, they're your enemy everywhere you see them." He continued: "So, if the Jews are your enemy in Israel, it doesn't mean Jews are not your enemy here. Every single Jew is your enemy."

If that rule applies, someone might think you could just kill any Jewish man walking down the street, another group member said. "If the guy walking down the street says, pro Zion, pro Zion . . . wears a big Jewish thing saying, yeah, pro Israeli state . . . okay, now you're a target. "If you are to do . . . to that guy you wouldn't be held accountable like, by 'Allah' or anything . . . and you would be rewarded for it because he is an enemy."

OSLO (Reuters) - Police in Norway have arrested a Gambian-born man and charged him and his wife with subjecting five of their six daughters to genital mutilation, officials said on Friday.

The practice, also known as female circumcision, is outlawed in Norway and arouses horror among many people in the West but is a rite of passage for young women in many countries, predominantly in Africa.

The youngest of the five mutilated girls, all born in Norway, is five years old, police officials said. The others are aged seven, 10, 13 and 14 and live in Gambia [90% Muslim - bitpig], national broadcaster NRK reported.

Police officer Hanne Kristin Rohde, head of the violent crime and vice section of the Oslo police, said on Norwegian commercial television TV 2 that the father -- a naturalized Norwegian citizen along with his wife -- was taken into custody on Friday.

"Norwegian police have charged this couple of Gambian background for breaking the Norwegian law on genital mutilation -- five of their six daughters are circumcised," Rohde said.

The mother is pregnant with a seventh child and was deemed unfit to be held in jail. Source

On 19 May, the [leadership of] the [U.S. Navy's] Pacific Fleet ... identified Midway and Dutch Harbor, Aleutian Islands, as specific Japanese objectives ... [A]nalysts could determine exactly when the attack would take place. After examining previously intercepted messages... an attack on Midway on 4 June [was predicted]. Admiral Nimitz used this estimate to plan American countermeasures.

On 26 May... submarine USS Gudgeon (SS-211) sailed for a surface patrol northwest of Midway. Also on the 26th, aircraft ferry USS Kitty Hawk (AKV-1) arrived at Midway with reinforcements for Marine Air Group (MAG) 22, a light tank platoon earmarked for a mobile reserve, and the 3d Defense Battalion, equipped with 3-inch antiaircraft guns. On that same day, Task Force Sixteen (TF 16) under the command of Rear Admiral William F. Halsey, and centered around USS Hornet (CV- 8) and USS Enterprise (CV-6), returned to Pearl Harbor from the South Pacific to begin preparations for the upcoming battle. Although suffering from damage inflicted by Japanese bombs during the 7-8 May Battle of the Coral Sea, USS Yorktown (CV-5) returned the next day.

Also on the 26th, the Japanese Northern Force, which included two light carriers, sailed from Ominato toward the Aleutians. The next day, Japanese forces began getting underway for Midway. Chief among them was First Mobile Force, Carrier Strike Force (Vice Admiral Nagumo Chuichi), comprising the four large carriers Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, and Hiryu with a total of 229 carrier aircraft. On the 28th, the Japanese First Fleet, Main Body (Admiral Yamamoto in battleship Yamato) sortied from home waters. The Second Fleet, Escort Force (Rear Admiral Tanaka Raizo), including 15 transports, sailed from Saipan; Second Fleet, Occupation Support Force (Rear Admiral Kurita Takeo) sortied from Guam. These forces were supported by 17 patrol seaplanes.

TF 16 (Rear Admiral Raymond A. Spruance), formed around Enterprise and Hornet, departed Pearl Harbor on 28 May to take up a position northeast of Midway. Spruance replaced Halsey for this operation because Halsey was suffering from a painful attack of shingles. Two days later, Task Force Seventeen (TF 17) under the command of Rear Admiral Frank Jack Fletcher, formed around the quickly repaired Yorktown, and sailed from Pearl to join TF 16 northeast of Midway. When TF 17 and TF 16 joined about 350 miles northeast of Midway on 2 June, Rear Admiral Fletcher became officer in tactical command. The three American carriers, augmented by cruiser-launched floatplanes, provided 234 aircraft afloat. These were supported by 110 fighters, bombers, and patrol planes at Midway. As part of pre-battle disposition, 25 fleet submarines under the command of Rear Admiral Robert H. English were deployed around Midway.

Meanwhile, on 29 May, seaplane tender (destroyer) USS Thornton (AVD-11) arrived at French Frigate Shoals to relieve light minelayer USS Preble (DM-20) on patrol station there. The presence of U.S. ships at French Frigate Shoals prevented the Japanese from refueling flying boats to reconnoiter Pearl Harbor. Although the Japanese could not visually confirm the departure of Task Forces 16 and 17 from Pearl Harbor, American preparations to defend Midway were on the verge of discovery anyway. Japanese COMINT stations not only learned of carrier movements in and out of Pearl Harbor, simply by listening to increased air-ground radio chatter, but traffic analysis of "Urgent" American radio messages coming out of Pearl Harbor suggested at least one Task Force was at sea. Incredibly, these discoveries by Japanese COMINT were withheld from the Midway Strike Force because of Yamamoto's strict radio silence restrictions.

Today is the 66th anniversary of the Battle of Midway, in which the U.S. Navy essentially destroyed the Imperial Japanese Navy's ability to fight offensive war. This was the end of the era of expansion for the Japanese Empire; from Midway on, the ultimate victory of the U.S. and allied forces in the Pacific was never in doubt. In many ways, this was the battle that won the war.

CAIRO — A popular Japanese cartoon is sparking off outcries in the Muslim world where some fear it could fuel a backlash not seen since European papers carried cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed and a Dutch lawmaker released a controversial film earlier this year.

Shueisha Inc, a Japanese publisher involved in the production of the cartoon ‘‘JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’’ and its animation version, suspended sales of some of the original comics and the DVD series Thursday, but said the material was not intended to be offensive.

At issue is a 90-second segment from “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure,” which depicts Dio Brando, a villain, picking up a Quran from a bookshelf and apparently examining it as he orders the execution of the hero and his friends.

The animated movie is based on the wildly popular comic book by Hirohiko Araki, which has been carried in Shonen Jump, a weekly magazine, from 1987 to 2003. The cartoon series’ pirated version with Arabic subtitles has been distributed on websites since March 2007.

After a viewer posted negative comments and the still scene, it sparked off more protests. Eventually responses were carried on more than 300 Arab and Islamic Web forums with some accusing Japan of insulting the Quran.

Sheikh Abdul Hamid Attrash, chairman of the Fatwa (religious edict) Committee at Al-Azhar, the highest Sunni authority based in Cairo, dismissed the cartoon as an insult to Islam.

‘‘This scene depicts Muslims as terrorists, which is not true at all,’’ he said. ‘‘This is an insult to the religion and the producers would be considered to be enemies of Islam.’’ Source

In simplest terms, we are concerned that the very lifeblood of the world industrial economy—net oil export capacity—is draining away in front of our very eyes, and we believe that it is imperative that major oil importing countries like the United States launch an emergency Electrification of Transportation program--electric light rail and streetcars--combined with a crash wind power program.

As Alan Drake has pointed out, the United States--with roughly 1/3rd its current population, 1/25th of its current inflation adjusted GDP and with primitive Technology --built subways in its largest cities and streetcars in 500 cities, towns and villages in just 20 years (1897-1916), which does not even take into account numerous interurban systems.

If we could do it in 1908 with mules, manual labor and with minimal fossil fuel input, why can't we do it 2008?"

TOLERANCE ALERT! A public charter school in Minnesota — Tarik ibn Zayad Academy, which focuses on Middle Eastern culture and shares a mosque with the Muslim American Society of Minnesota (WTF??? - Ed.) — was ordered by the state education department today to stop offering religious instruction in Islam to its students. The school administration has been conducting Muslim prayer services and holding Islamic religious instruction classes during the school day. They also got in trouble for not flying the U.S, flag over the school in accordance with state law. Anyway, a TV news crew came out to the school today seeking to capture some reaction by the school's administration to the court orde, but what they got instead was a physical assault against them by the peace-loving, tolerant Muslim administrator of the school. The best part: the ssalaries of the assailants, as well as those of the teachers conducting the Islamic Studies classes at his public school, are paid for not by private tuitions, but rather with the tax dollars of the people of Minnesota — and, of course, by infidels like you.
