Fail! [Oct. 1st, 2008|12:54 pm]
So after setting some resulting going on for my PhD I thought it was about time I backed stuff up. Starting with things on my lappy....

After several attempts I conclude it doesn't want anything to do with writting DVD

Bum

Some of the stuff is small so I find a CD-RW, it spits it out

Double Bum

I then tried to use Liz's machine to burn the files from mine via the LAN.... Only to find out that despite having a DVD-RW it wasn't talking to the DVD-burning software, even after updates and reinstallation...

Triple Bum and fail

On the plus side I found my portable HHD

Of TV's [Mar. 11th, 2008|07:37 pm]
So the current TV is getting rather old, and annoying (speakers don't like many sounds)... So it's time for a new...

I am thinking of a LCD number 26"-32" range. Does any one have recommendations on this matter?

Other than that am slowly slogging through the PhD...

Yum Yum Yum [Feb. 7th, 2008|08:15 pm]
I've just made some surprisingly un-chocolately chocolate flap jack... It isn't chocolate covered... It doesn't have chocolate chips.... It is however rammed full of nuts and raisins and sultanas, and in my opinion is rather yummy

Sillyness..... [Aug. 10th, 2007|11:35 pm]
I don't know why... but I decided to see just how much money I had...
I had in that box....
that little unsupsecting box where all the coppers go when I think my pocket is still too heavy ...
even after attempts to get rid of all the change...

The Results:

I now have a number of money bags lined up on my desk waiting to be taken to the bank, would anyone care to guess how many?

After some time with [info]rob_is_raze
It now, in principle does everything it needs to... just need to smarten it up etc...

Holidays so far [Jun. 13th, 2007|02:40 pm]
[Current Location |Living Room Floor, Bude]
[mood | relaxed]

Holidays started Thursday evening, and naturally my train was late (something to do with a bridge/ signals of something being struck (possibly by lightning) up in the Scottish Boarders) But it got to Bristol with varying degrees of lighting (the engine of under my carriage kept cutting out so effecting the reading lights and the AC supply to my lappy). But it got me there, and amadou_a collected me and the vast amounts of yummy fruit I had brought down.

Friday I got up, made amadou_a some coffee, and then went back to sleep (I am on holiday). Lunchtime-ish went off to Morrisons and picked up some Mackerel for tea (it was yummy), and some clotted cream

Saturday was the final L5R... The plan worked on for long last session started coming undone from the start, only latter would it be understood why ....

There was fighting, lots of fighting, and some more fighting. Such that in any scene the PC's where usually outnumbered by the rest of us how monstered, or played Crab Bushi 1 etc... My two favourite scenes was assaulting the wall where I think

[info]dang's and my goblin where the only ones to not die (we used this thing called a bow and did our best to making

[info]eveningparadox a large pincushion :) unlike azhacael whose goblins seemed to die before they even arrived. In a shocking turn up for the books Crab Bushi 1 in the Greater Oni scene was given strict orders to protect  [info]indyjames and did so without getting eaten by the oni... His reward.. well I'll get to that latter...

Masaru had a couple of cool scenes, cutting down zombies like a lawn mower, the only problem was is that for a while they seemed to appear faster than they where cut down.

Then the finale of the battle... The palace... the court chambers... and Tain (played by [info]eveningparadox ) appears with some Blood Mages in tow, the mind reels in light of the treachery... Words where said it came to blows and vast amounts of blood magic.

One by one the forces of light where felled. Utaka Miho ([info]invisigoth51) was the first to fall, claimed by a fireball fuelled by the tsukis foul blood magics, before she got to do anything. Next Kenshin and the Damiyio where eventually felled through Tains mighty blows, and the fell invocations. The Tsuki's dark magic though not harming Masaru dogged his every move, and all too slowly Masaru felled the Tuski. Eventually only two where left. Tain and Masaru faced each other, only might of will keeping Masaru going in spite of his wounds. There was one last chance for salvation. Yet Masaru couldn’t guide Tain to the path. His former friend closed the gap between them, only hate left in his eyes. The outcome was inevitable, Tain untouched by any blow, Masaru barely still standing. The end came quickly, Masaru felled by 2 swifts blows, the Tsukis dark magics preventing Masaru from even harming Tain....
Even as Masaru fell Tain loomed over his fallen opponent, and with a mocking look sank is blade into Masaru’s chest before administering the same 'justice' to the Daimyo. And so passed Hiruma Masaru. Was a sad way to go, given the Masaru did very little to cause Tain fall, many others. He was far too busy to be involved in such pettiness. Masarus spent over 1/3 of his D/T taken up fighting the Shadowlands, in one form or another with about a further 1 in 6 being taken up with duties and Captain of the Guard...  In fact this was to such an extent Masaru didn't really bother to find out what else was happening unless it was actually important (masaru was never one for bickering)... Yes he knew there was a conspiracy called the Kami Killers, but only got involved for a few D/t when they kidnapped the Damiyios wife (and unknown to him replaced her with and agent), when the agent escaped and at the end when the ppl investigating it needed a tank, to kill a Lion General that would kill the Emporer. But Meh. Would have been nice for Masaru to be able to have spent a bit more d/t enjoying his wifes company. He did find the time to forge a Jade Katana though :)

And Crab Bushi 1’s reward? Well he got to come back as [info]indyjames’ bodyguard for the ½ hour of court at the end, and thus got a name!

After L5R had pub gathering where I was lucky enough to get food before they shut the kitchen. Didn't do much Sunday, or on Monday :P whilst doing things penned the little story accompanying Masarus Death poem. Did do a really yummy Roast Chicken for amadou_a on Monday and got to raid amadou_a's parents allotments where lots of booty (namely strawberries) were plundered.

Yesterday headed back down to Cornwall, and no sooner had I arrived and had lunch than a mate rang, so meet up with him and did some fishing. So spent a few hours bobbing up and down listening to the sea.  Was really enjoyable, the way I caught the tea (line caught mackrel gutted within 30s of being caught), and got a Lobster (for a tenner) out of it too is just a big and very yummy bonus.... Mackerel where super tasty as were the strawberries and clotted cream that followed it up.

Today ain;t done much, though have just put Larry the Lobster in the pot

There we go.

A big Thank you to all the people (particualarily

[info]herder_of_cats and Rob) who shared scenes with me made L5R such fun for four year

Meh... I am increasingly of the opinion that A) Computers are evil and B) I hate them... This is mostly due to the way that my PhD keeps on throwing up oddities for now apperent reason... but hey...

Driving progesses... So long as the road is suitably wide I am quite happy the zip along, and am even braving dual carriage way to cross the tyne.

I've decided to take next week off, so get to enjoy the final live rings and my b'day without worrying about work (well that's the plan)  so get to spend vast amounts of time in the south west, which is always good :D

Other than that have been doodling alot as players of L5R have/ will see...

Cyclists... and pavements... [Feb. 1st, 2007|02:11 pm]

[Current Location |Uni]
[mood | confused]
[music |Radio 1]

Why do all the cyclists these days insist in using the pavements?... usually at high speed in line abreast formation and on the side of the road where they'd need to cross oncoming traffic to get on the correct side of the road, where they should be... Also why do they always look so put out when you refuse to giveway to them thus 'forcing' them to apply their breaks, go single file, or finish letting you get through that narrow gap between the bus stop and parked cars/ railings....

This is despite the roads being extremely quiet/ and or having a cyclelane...

Oh I'd love to see some of them meet a cop having a bad day who then deals them out the £500 fine...

I'd also love to see smany motorists meet some no nonsense cops after cutting up ignoring cyclists... That way cyclists would have no excuse for using the pavement (unless they are about 6yrs old and learning to ride...)

AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!!!

So I reported this fault on Friday... and surprise surprise still nothing, despite it being labelled 'HIGH' Priority in the fancy fault reporting forms... and untill I put a reminder about this in an hour ago the only active software fault....

AAARRGGGGHHHH!!!!

needless to say this is proving a tad frustating....

In other news work progresses on Heavy Armour MkIII for L5R...

Yes there are players and characters who have yet to wear any suits of armour in L5R, let alone make any... and here I am making the 3rd suit for my personal use....

[music |Radio 1]

Well after how long ranting about my uni computer my prayers have been answered, for sat in front of me it my new computer... Yes I have finally a computer newer than 4 yrs old to do my phd on (The slowest machine I have had was a 450MHz PIII).

This made me very happy.

Not only is it new (it's is just out the box), but is has a reasonable spec!!!!

*bounce bounce bounce*

I am looking at a shiny TFT moniter, rather than the really old CRT job, so now have a crisp clean image on my screen :D

And nestling under the desk is a shiny machine with a DVD-RW so I can now back up useful amounts of stuff, and tucked inside it is a 3GhZ Pentium D processor so I now can run matlab and do other things... Yes multi tasking has finally reached my computer....

And the computes provided for the undergraduates no longer make my computer look like an abacuss!!!

Yes it is a good day, well at least I think so.

The 'down' side of the day I'm not hearding some U.G.'s around a site visit... but compared to the shininess before me is a small price to pay!!!!!

*careful bouncing so as to avoid damaging the new 'puter'*

3) A lack of suitable substitute for item 2.

Only through swift action and proper preparation can this crisis be resolved.

a thought about my day [Oct. 12th, 2006|03:49 pm]

[mood |Uninspired]
[music |Radio 1]

Here is a thought about my day, granted it isn't going to change the word, it isn't even much of a thought, more of an observation, but here it is;

Even though my view consists of painted brick wall, it is amazing how much more appealing the pastel yellow suites it when it Newcastle isn't being rained on and covered in mist.
That being said it is still boring and uninspiring... I really should decorate it with some posters...

Ello all... busy times... [Jun. 28th, 2006|08:05 pm]
I'm been busy... very busy and not just doing with uni work (mainly doin' report like things...) but enough of this. My main occupation has been spending lots of time on Mr Bransons shiny machines, either ferrying me to Bristol or shoipping me back.

Highlights of this included:

[info]herder_of_cats and Marys Wedding. what could be said that hasn't been said before. Mary looked awesome, Mark look fantastic, and smiles the size of continents where to be seen on their faces. Even dancing was attempted (if only for a while), failed dismally to play decent pool. Erm erm was all in all a beautiful day.

[info]herder_of_cats stag do was mucho fun. Karting, lots of fun. Lots and lots of fun. Curry and lansdown good. Also over the course of the weekend navigatory skills getting [info]rarg, [info]missing_a_chair and I to carting (the roads around avonmouth are fun). Pizza from [info]amadou_a's local takeaway provided munchies for karting, and food for an for romantic wheel watching the sun go down to.

2 Sessions of L5R were had to mucho mucho fun. Though much running round after ashigaru stopping panicy rumours flying... Other than Benny Hill chase music can't think how it could have been more amusing for those observing.,This also provided an oppertunity to break in the BBQ at House of Game. Mucho BBQ-ing was done, and all tasty to. Yum Yum.

[info]amadou_a's garden continues to change and is looking greenier and more colourful by the day, and now has a new added bbq.

Thanks to:
[info]herder_of_cats and M for inviting Liz and I to reception and Me to stag do

House of  Game for providing crash space.

[Apr. 25th, 2006|04:18 pm]
[mood | bouncy]
[music |Ash - Shining Light]

I have mostly been battling evil Matlab! (It is unbelievably evil, but enough of that). When not battling the EVIL I have been seeing lots of [info]amadou_a, playing Guildwars and have yet to give into the lure of World of Warcarft, though this could change as I am the last bastion holding out in the house atm… How long will I last who knows, I am also gearing up for a Bloodbowl league, where I will be playing squishy (but not a squishy as some) Humans, will they be the league bullys? Or propping up the league from 6’ under? Only time will tell.

After a longish slog from Christmas am off for a weeks hols next week. Highlights include, seeing lots of [info]amadou_a, lounging around a sleepy sea side town before the emits invade, L5R and I’m sure general chilling and catching up.Though need to prepare an evil report for supervisors the week in which I come back, and so far have found out alot, but nothing really report worthy... So better get cracking...

In other news the washing machine has finally been fixed so am off to do battle with the laundry. Also given that the sun is out and the temperature in double figures shorts and sandals are out, you have been warned

And in memeage:

Sunny summer day
Your forecast: 77°F, 38 mph wind, 13% chance of precipitation
What your score means:

Please note that all variables are scaled to a range of 0 to 100. I'd like to present some of them differently, but the OkCupid system doesn't seem to allow independent scaling of variables.

Category names are not meant to be taken literally. They are only weather patterns that match your score for the three variables. A person might be classified as "hurricane" because he/she is outgoing, athletic and compassionate; it does not relate to any destructive behavior by any means.

  • Temperature measures your relationships with other fellow humans. A high temperature means you are caring and compassionate, and you tend to keep a personal touch with all your friends. A low temperature means you are more independent, and although you may like to hang out with your friends, personal life rarely enters the picture.

  • Wind measures your level of energy. A low wind says you are usually calm and composed, somewhat introverted, and perhaps do not prefer intense physical activities. A high wind says you are energetic, extroverted, and tend to lead an active lifestyle. Higher wind can also mean greater ambitions in life. In extreme cases and especially when coupled with high precipitation, high wind might suggest a tendency toward violence.

  • Precipitation measures your mood. A sunny sky, as you might guess, is associated with a bright, optimistic mood. People like this tend to be satisfied with their lives, and might take the effort to help make other people's lives better as well. A rainy sky would be the opposite: people in this category tend to be moody or depressed at times.

So, What do you think? Do the scores seem fair to you? If not, you can help make it better by sending me a message with your comments, suggestions, rants, death threats, whatever. Otherwise, your vote is very much appreciated. Thanks!

My test tracked 3 variables How you compared to other people your age and gender:

My Eyes! My Eyes! [Jan. 17th, 2006|03:57 pm]
[mood | productive]
[music |Radio 1]

Ello all... Papers are evil... You turn your back for a minute and suddenly you have to read lots of papers... But being academic papers they are automatically EVIL, and have hiding skills that will beat any object it is vital to have instantly... And when you do find them they'll be in electronic format with some baffling file name... or if they do have a sensible file name it'll be inconsistent with your re-named files... GGGRrrrrr... But enough of that...

Christmas and New Years where all fun, and where characterised by over indulgence giving and recieving of presents (inlcuding some really really really yummy chocs from [info]amadou_a ), seeing lots of my faimily and [info]amadou_a and by having a wisdom tooth removed... Even the tooth got into the spirit of the season and came out very easily, which was a plesent surprise.

Last weekend was good. I did pretty much nothing, which was highly enjoyable, highlights included finally watching Kill Bill, both volumes back to back, and having lots of Bacon and eggs... MMmmm... Bacon... The downside of this laziness is the food cupboards aren't so much full of food any more... I wouldn't go so far as to even say have food in... This could easily be changed, all I need to do is decide what food to get... *starts scribbling down ideas in a quasi-list way*

The prospects for the weekend are looking good *bounce bounce* all I have in my way are an eye watering amount of reading to do... well on the the reading!!!!
