Protest on Prospect Park
It was inspiring to be among my neighbors - liberals in Brooklyn from various Democratic clubs - who gathered in Prospect Park last night and heard some speeches from local politicians about how even non-swing-state residents can help sway this election to RE-defeat Bush. My friend and I saw lots of rainbow flags among the attendees, and our gaydar was on overdrive, but it wasn't just a gay and lesbian Democratic club that was convening there. We took a walk through Prospect Park to Grand Army Plaza, which I felt wasteful since we were invisible to others in the neighborhood and only a few passersby saw us within the park path. I think we would have been far more effective walking down 7th Avenue, the main street of Park Slope where various parades are routed throughout the year. At least some of the attendees were cute, not to mention the really nice cops from public affairs who even offered to take our picture (to be posted at www.haydennet.com/2004/sep). They were in very good spirits as they probably respected us for what we were doing even though the park permits were obtained in great haste. Kudos to those who pulled it together. At least we had some good press.
