"A Dirty Shame" Review/Movies (with Bears)
I saw this movie last night with a group of bears. While I like the fact that bears are being shown in mainstream film, I was saddened to see it relegated to just another one of many "fetishes" that the movie touched on. I guess I should be happy that if there had to be SOME representation of gay men (sex addicts in this case), that they were bears.

Tracy Ullman is always awesome and diverse, and Chris Isaak was looking pretty hot for an average Joe type. He is aging nicely and is a surprisingly good actor for someone whose first foray into entertainment was his folksy music. He's always kind of reminded me of another talented male vocalist from the South, Harry Connick, Jr.

The bears were not given the most profound lines to read, but they were certainly representative and I honestly believe I've chatted with at least one of them (the "cub") online. I heard a rumor that the three are real life lovers. The movie was very fast paced so few characters were shown in-depth. It is nice to see such a sex-positive movie. I can just feel the fundies cringe.

My ex called me just before seeing the John Waters film. My ex had recognized John Waters walking the streets in our various trips to Provincetown (haydennet.com/ptown) and said something that I found very agreeable. Namely, it's about time a GAY director write about GAY characters who are GAY in real life.

For a more realistic and flattering portrayal of bears in the mainstream (however mainstream a film festival entry can be), there is Cacchoro, a Spanish film sloppily titled in English as "Bear Cub," which I have begun to more formally review on my web site's review section, which I am in the process of revamping.

I agree with your review of the new john waters movie. I think he is confusing "fetish" with "sub-group". I dont think the bears are a fetish..its just another segment of the gay community..

hmm...but the three bears in the movie are cute!!!!

:P

I don't know. I'd definitely consider bears a fetish because it's based on something physical like hair and size.

I never bought into the lie of "bear is just an attitude."

Oddly enough, Chris Isaak is from Stockton, CA, along with our favorite LJ bear [info]cpratt. Even when he was younger, I thought he was handsome. I loved him in the SWAT uniform in Silence of the Lambs.
