I'm looking for livejournal source code. It's not in sixapart's repository, so where can I find it?

Livejournal vs. Windows Live Writer

  • Jul. 26th, 2008 at 3:07 PM
Hello All,

I want to hack WLW to make support for user tags and (probably) mood and music.

1. In WLW for LJ interop Blogger API is used. Is in LJ Blogger API implementation any way to send metadata with post? Documentation states:
"LiveJournal-specific meta data (current mood and music) are supported by including a line consisting of lj-metadatakey: metadata in the post body (e.g. lj-mood: happy).", but when I'm trying to include such line in post body in WLW nothing happens. Is it problem of the way how WLW format post or LJ Blogger API have been changed?

2. Another way is to use ATOM Protocol. But WLW can't retrieve categories list. What version of ATOM protocol is used now?

Unfortunately, I haven't enough free time to write complete LJ XML-RPC API implementation for WLW, I can just rewrite or modify some methods in WLW.

Okay I got a new computer at Christmas, erm I have alot of problems. I had alot more when i got it but i solved them myself

- I need a way to make it run faster,
- as  i have so much on it. Filled up a 60g hardrive, but luckily it has two because it is a duel core processor but i need a way to make that one the default one as whenever i try to install something it just says there is not enough memory.
- Recently i installed Black and White 2, whenever i stop playing it, it can't get rid of the RAM meaning my computer just slows down as all the RAM builds up and i can't run anything
- Whenever i have to turn it of, new updates need to be installed, however out of the 3 computers in our house with VISTA mine is the only one that need updates constanly and everyday.
- It makes a strange loud noise kinda like a broken motor. In order to repair i have just turned up my music, but it is kinda getting louder.
- itunes doesn't work with Firefox, without slowing down my computer a ridiculas amount
- Windows DVD maker won't let me turn off Data execution protection, meaning i can't make any DVDs

Done to Troubleshoot - downloaded all recent updates, cleaned up my main hardrive, not used itunes (used Real insted) Tried to turn of Date Exectution Protection but it says it can't run without it.

OS - Windows Vista home premiem
Web browser - Firefox 2
Ram - 1gb but the graphics card uses 300mb of that so it is only 767mb
Model - Aspire M1100
Processor - AMD aAthlon(tm) 64 X2 Duel Core Processor 400+ 2.10GHz

Computer ability - Intermediate, but i know hardly anything about hardware, just a little about BIOS, Motherboard, RAM and hardrive. Software normally i can do
System Type - 32 bit operating system

Help?

  • Jul. 25th, 2008 at 11:25 PM
Ok, so my little sister ordered a Dell laptop and a wireless router from Dell. We're trying to set up the wireless router, which is a Belkin Wireless G router f5d7230 4v9. Now, everything's working fine but when it comes to the time for the installation cd to ask us to choose our ISP and put in a username and password, I have no clue what to put.

We have an RCA cable modem from Time Warner Cable and access the internet through AOL's Bring Your Own Access plan. We called Belkin, and supposedly the guy said we couldn't use AOL anymore once we install the software.

Honestly? I know all the downsides of AOL but I absolutely fucking refuse to give it up because all my shit's saved on it (emails and favorites and all) and it's too much of an inconvenience for me to save everything and transfer.

So I'm calling back tomorrow and will raise holy hell with my family, because I told them to get another Time Warner Cable modem, but since practically everyone in my family doesn't listen to me, this situation happened.

I want to know if there's a way for me to still log onto the 'net with my AOL software once this goddamn router is installed.

My computer died. It was making a funny noise, like a fan hitting something then just ka-blewy.

A friend of mine and I took a look at it. It was either the power supply or the CPU, at least that is what he thought. I'm a software person, not a hardware person.

So I got a new power supply, set everything up and what does it do?

The front light blinks for a moment, all of the fans (including the CPU fan) turn for a moment and than it just stops. Nothing.

So now he believes that it is the motherboard.

Mostly I've got an answer but I'd love any advice or second opinions. If the CPU was fried but the Mobo was ok, it should power on and give me an error. It is a brand new power supply (that I'll probably end up returning) so it isn't the PSU.

So Mobo or CPU? I'm betting Mobo. Any tech people out there know a place to find a cheap ASUS P4C800 Deluxe?

Thanks.

ok .. so i just got a fairly new HP Pavallion desktop & when i got home, like an idiot.. i didnt want any of the files/programs on there so i decided to use my Windows XP Home Edition CD to reinstall windows. (& yes the computer currectly had Home Edition, not Professional or anything)when it asked if i wanted to remove the current partition & start a new one, i did & it started the install. after it got to 100%, it said

"Setup cannot set the required Windows XP configuration information. This indicates an internal Setup error.

Contact your system administrator."

so of course it deleted the previous system i had.. can i recover it? do i need a recovery disk or something?

wtf. does anyone know what the problem might be & what i could try to fix this? is there any way around spending more money? i just spent my whole paycheck on the damned computer (TODAY.. mind you..)

Problem with laptop adaptor

  • Jul. 26th, 2008 at 3:58 AM
So the, huh, thing I plug the adaptor in has been pushed back into my laptop, so it's been a bit difficult to charge it, since I have to find a certain angle for the cord to be everytime I plug in the adaptor and any little touch or movement can disconnect it.
I'm taking it to a repair shop when I have the time so they can open and fix it, but in the meantime is it safe to use my laptop? Someone told me there was danger of there being a short-circuit, so I'm worried but I'd like confirmation of this.

I wasn't sure if this was the right community for this kind of question, since it isn't related to software (and so I didn't include operative system, etc information). If this is the wrong place I apologise in advance and will remove it. Either way thank you!

XP Service Pack 3

  • Jul. 25th, 2008 at 8:52 AM
Question/Problem: Service Pack 3 is in the 'ready to install' stage on my computer due to a key hitting error when I meant to press 'quit'. Should I just install it, (I am worried about issues with the service pack if they still exist), or try to get it to stop being 'ready to install'. How do I get it out of the 'ready to install' mode?

Operating System and VERSION: (Examples: Windows 95, Windows XP, Mac OS X, Ubuntu Linux) Windows XP (service pack 2)

Web Browser and VERSION: (Example: Internet Explorer 7, FireFox 2.0.0.9 {You can find this in the HELP -> ABOUT section of your browser}) Firefox 2.0.0.16

Your level of experience: (Beginner, Intermediate, Seasoned, Expert, God) beginner/intermediate

Duration of problem: 2 days

Any steps you've taken to troubleshoot? not installed yet
Unfortunately, I can't give you a screencap because apparently the universe works against me, but... when I view files in VLC, they are REALLY dark, like underexposed and the colour setting is totally... messed up, but if I take a screencap of it by right-clicking etc. - the colouring is fine. So I'm guessing there's some problem with VLC, but earlier today I had no trouble at all, the colour settings in VLC being fine.

Does anyone know what the issue is?

bibliography of research on LJ

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 1:17 PM
I'm trying to help LJ track down research that has been done on LiveJournal to date. Could you please help me? Pretty please?  I'm looking for three things:
  1. citations of published, peer-reviewed articles that examine LJ;
  2. PDFs of not-yet-published articles concerning LJ;
  3. a list of scholars who study LJ-related issues (and their affiliation/contact info).
I'm interested in any and all research from all disciplinary/methodological traditions. I'm also very interested in research on non-English user populations. So, please don't restrain yourself to scholarship that's in English. If you know of research taking place in Russian, Portuguese, Japanese, etc., please send that my way.

It would be tremendously helpful if y'all could look at your Endnotes and share anything that you know. Feel free to leave comments here or email me at danah [at] danah [dot] org. Also, if you could send any and all PDFs my way, I'd be super duper uber stoked. (Getting PDFs via email is much easier than trying to track them down on the bloody locked sites that journals maintain.)  Please forward my request on to other scholars that you know who might not be a part of this community. And if you know of non-English research communities like this, could you please translate and forward my request?

It'll take me a little while to aggregate and organize this, but I'll return back with a complete bibliography that should be useful for all of us.  Any and all help and citations are really appreciated.  So I preemptively thank you.

Note: For those who don't know me, my name is danah boyd.  I'm a PhD candidate at UC-Berkeley in the School of Information and I'm an ethnographer who studies how American teenagers use social network sites for sociable purposes.  I'm also on LiveJournal's Advisory Board.  I strongly believe that decisions about LiveJournal should be based on a clear understanding of peoples and practices as well as technology and business.  Since LJ is not aware of all of the research in this space, I've volunteered to help them track it down.

API for user profile and photos

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 12:18 PM
Hi,

Are there any LiveJournal API that will allow me to read and update user's profile, as well as photos?  I took a look at http://www.livejournal.com/developer/, but didn't find too much about actually profiles there.

Thank you.

computer screen going black?

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 2:15 PM
I've head my monitor for a good 4 years, but for the past month occasionally when my screen is on, it will go black. You can still see the outline of the stuff on my desktop and the button says its still on, but its all black.

What could this be from?
Thanks!

I'm a'buyin a new laptop!

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 12:40 PM
After having my old laptop for about 30-months now, it's time to move on to newer pastures.

As I have had Dells for the last decade, I would like to stick with this family, but am open to any non-Mac suggestions.

I'd like something that will last me at least 3-years, but still be affordable (ie, <$1,600)

This will be used primarily for basic school work... writing papers... research... etc... But occasionally it will be used to give powerpoint presentations and watch movies.

NO VIDEO GAMES will be played on it... i'm a recovering addict... ha.

I currently use an Inspiron E1505 and am quite happy with it's layout. What would YOU all recommend?

edit: one question i forgot to throw in: what's the difference between a Dual Core and Core 2 Duo

PSP replacement?

  • Jul. 23rd, 2008 at 8:17 PM
I've used PSP for years on my home computer, but I'm taking my Macbook with me when I move and I don't know what to do about photo editing. I basically need a program that will allow me to crop, resize, and add borders and text. Preferably something free that I can download, or something cheap that can be purchased online. Help?

.ELF Format

  • Jul. 23rd, 2008 at 6:36 PM
My Dad has a camera that he connects to a tree that takes pictures of the wildlife that is up in our woods. I need to download some new software for it, but it is in .ELF format. When I downloaded the new update, it was just the usual white box when there is nothing associated with it to open it. What program do you use to open an .ELF? I am going to do some searching myself, just wanted to get some help ASAP, if needed.

Intel cuts CPU prices

  • Jul. 23rd, 2008 at 3:05 PM
I've never posted price drops before, because normally they aren't that significant in comparison. This time seems a bit different:

http://www.trustedreviews.com/cpu-memory/news/2008/07/23/Intel-Cuts-Quad---Dual-Core-CPU-Prices/p1

reseller prices:
Top of the line Core 2 Duo E8500 drops 30% to $183
Core 2 Duo E7200 drops 15% to $113
Entry quad core Core 2 Quad Q6600 drops 14% to $193

Looks like Newegg is already onto the new prices:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115036

This means all dual core Intel chips are under 200, and so is the entry quad core Q6600, which undersells the roughly equal performing, highest Black Edition Phenom X4 9850.

http://techreport.com/articles.x/14424/4

Ouch. But Intel had already planned the drop in May so it isn't some off-the-cuff punching deal. If you search Google you'd see April/May price drops from Intel dating all the way back to 1992. No conspiracy involved.

AMD can not react to this because they can't put their entire line under $200.

Uploading photos on LiveJournal

  • Jul. 23rd, 2008 at 5:35 PM
Hi All.

I want to write a simple utility (using Java) to upload pictures in LiveJournal Scrapbook directly from my PC (or, say, a cellphone???). I need some help to get started, i.e.

What documentation I should go through.
What APIs I can use.
The general method to accomplish what I intend to accomplish.

Just an outline would be enough; I will find out the rest.

Thanks.

Dexter.

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 11:07 AM
im trying to clean up my computer by going to the finder - pictures - iphoto library- originals { and then deleting the pics i dont want on my comp }

my question though is, can i just delete everything in the Modified folder and still have those pictures in their original state in Original library? or will those get deleted too/not open anymore?

i just dislike having another copy of a picture i probably dont want anymore because i decided to play with the rotation or its colors. however some of the pictures i have edited i do want (it doesnt matter if theyre not edited).

do i make sense?

AOL/AIM Help

  • Jul. 23rd, 2008 at 11:31 AM
I know most of you would say the best way to help my computer would be to get AOL OFF it. Trust me, I am thinking about it.

I use AOL at the moment, and AIM to IM when I don't have AOL open. But lately, whether or not I'm signed on with the same name in both spots or different names (such as my fiance on AIM and myself on AOL), when I sign on AOL I get IMs in both spots from AOL System Msg telling me my screen name is signed on in multiple locations. Again, even when it's DIFFERENT screen names that are signed on. It gets better. When I sign OFF AOL, AIM kicks off like it was depending on AOL for its connection (it's not, I have a cable connection), then when it signs back on I get ANOTHER AOL System Msg telling me I am signed ON in different locations.

It's a minor annoyance, but getting added to a list that is making me strongly consider uninstalling the AOL Software. AOL is free and AOLMail on the web is getting closer and closer to emulating the program itself. Between AIM and AOLMail, I don't see a real need for the program. BUT, for the time being, anyone know a way to fix this?

Thanks,
Sean
