my mom came to visit today and we made chocolate chip cookies, ate pizza, and watched Something's Gotta Give (jack nicholson/diane keaton movie). we had fun and i only feel a little guilty for not being super productive!

my mom also took the color test (i had to teach her how to use the mouse and left click because she never uses computers) and this is her color (it definitely describes her :) :

BLUE

2:56 pm - walking in Dorchester after the snow
walking in Dorchester after the snow piles of white everywhere
people mark their shoveled-out parking spots with
trash barrels, broken and bent chairs, orange construction cones,
recycling buckets topsy-turvy in the slush, and my favorite
the lonely and low-slung beach chairs with
parakeets, stripes, and tropical flowers sitting in the snow
as if someone were just returning to obstinately
sit in the frozen air the chair imagines
a summer's day an old man
sitting in the sun
drinking a lemonade

*worries*
n____
schoolwork
working out
going back to school
not enough time

*feelings*
backache
oversleep
gray sky
darkness
chocolate

*lonelinesses*
for lotr
for em
for mom
dad
for not drinking
for time to do things

why are there
worry and worries
feeling and feelings
silences and silence
loneliness but not lonelinesses?

well i'm going to run to the gym in the slush
and that should make me feel better!

don't know if this is true... but it sounds cool!

You Are the Investigator

5

You're independent - and a logical analytical thinker.

You love learning and ideas... and know things no one else does.

Bored by small talk, you refuse to participate in boring conversations.

You are open minded. A visionary. You understand the world and may change it.

8:55 pm - THANKS!!
a belated thank you to everyone who came out for my birthday last weekend... [info]windowpane, [info]kittendelicious, [info]talludahling, [info]lombardo, nancy, and [info]phoenixisrising... and everyone who sent birthday wishes.... oh... and a late birthday to [info]cathlin4 whose birthday was one day before mine, and [info]phoenixisrising whose b-day was two days later (amy, try not to almost break your nose on any more ice cream cakes, okay? :D )... scorpios rock!

got happy birthday sang to me twice, once in uno's, and once by my fifth period class (who as soon as they discovered it was my b-day, refused to do any work and claimed they were too busy "celebrating")
one girl student mused, miss, you're a scorpio? that's weird... scorpios are usually agressive... but you're so quiet and laid-back... of course the male students chimed in... she is agressive! she's a wrestler! heh... das' right...

anyway... thanks to everyone... i've been working so much and feeling anti-social, so it meant a lot to spend time with you all...

8:49 pm - teaching...
[info]cathlin4 wrote this )

and i replied...

bamchikabam
2004-09-15 00:44 (link)
aarrggh... i completely hear and agree with every word, cathlin. (except for the sexualized nipple part, which, as of yet, thank god, i have not been subjected to... probably because i feel gross and fat from sitting on my ass lesson planning, stressing, and drinking red wine, so hence i have been wearing baggy, middle aged, teacherish clothes for the most part... although i did wear a sleeveless shirt yesterday and all the young ninth grade football players let out a chorus of "ms. summer... will you flex... just once" "ms. summer, you can be our coach, can you be our coach? (and this was a good day!) "not now, dominique, after class i can flex, now we must learn" what the hell am i saying! these students are completely insane! what are the ninth graders on??? i forgot that i have to tell them everything ten times, put it on a handout, write it on the overhead and the bulletin board, before they will understand even simple things, for example, that they are not supposed to tear their journal entries OUT of their writer's notebooks!!!)

yesterday there was a fire alarm. i told my class, "don't worry, it's just a few police sirens. we must carry on".... then the next door teacher comes in and tells us that it is indeed a fire alarm... (but not very loud in my triangle shaped, orange-cinder blocked room)...
the students: "ms. summer! you were going to burn us alive! we'd all be dead!"
me: "well, i would have burned with you" (trying to console them)

today they kept telling me "mice, mice", pointing behind me, which i figured was just another ploy to distract me and make me look like a complete tool, so i said something like,
"the mice aren't bothering us, so we're not going to bother them"
and then after school today around 6 p.m. (and why, why was i still THERE at 6 pm, since i had arrived at school before 7 am??? god only knows...)
... and, so, what did i see?
a small gray mouse running along the wall, under the heaters and the big hideous blue, wheeled, supply cabinet!!!
geez....
perhaps my students are not quite as crazed as i thought they were...

and yes, i still have to do my lessons for tomorrow
and will again be at school in 10 hours from now.
i need to sleep!!

9:03 pm - Bjork and Looking for a Roommate
Bjork's new album Medulla is out today!!! MUST GO BUY....

Also, I am looking for a roommate to share my 2 bedroom apartment in Dorchester. The girl from craigslist who was supposed to move in with me is not because she took a job in Seattle...
If you know of anyone who needs a room, let me know. The rent is $400, it is in a nice neighborhood with GREAT neighbors, 10-15 walk to the Red line (JFK/UMASS) and they will have an awesome roommate who is fun and responsible (me), and it is available now.

good news... my hand is not broken- it is just a contusion... :)

behind the cut is a letter from my friend Nate, a wrestler who is competing in the Olympics for the UK... he gives some very interesting inside details on what it's like to be there, and since certain people on LJ (timmeh!) are interested in the olympics, I'm posting it here.

am sittin here feeling really indecisive and why?
thinkin of all the things i could be doing but am not
like callin patrick, and john-- which i will do shortly once i make up my mind what to do
like writing a letter to alena in germany or even an email
like planning/brainstorming curriculum, procedures, and discipline policy for next year (or rather next month...)
found out today that i'll be teaching mostly ninth grade english which i think will be good bc i have experience with that and teaching those little jack-in-the-boxes is good practice because they are so hyper and squirrely and fun and don't really realize what high school (or academics at least) is all about yet so they are very challenging to teach, so i'll learn a lot, especially classroom management-wise
i also learned that the ninth graders will have two one-hour blocks of english a day
another (male) teacher is teaching the other block, so i need to email him so we can collaborate and make sure our learning goals complement each other. the headmaster at my school said that he envisons that the other english teacher will be responsible for most of the massachusetts framework curriculum, and that i can teach whatever i want (cool but a little too vague) and really focus on teaching writing if i want to, and the other teacher can focus on literature. i think that would be good, but i still think we should split up the learning standards and make sure that we know what we want our students to be able to do by the end of the year, so that we won't overlap our curriculum too much.
i also get to come in to school an hour late, which is awesome (not a morning person), and teach a class after school that will focus on the students doing long-term writing projects (newspapers, short stories, novels, screenplays?) it would be cool if the students wanted to produce work to submit to teen 'zines and literary magazines, and newspapers. i think they will be more motivated and work harder if they know their work will be recognized and be read by a wide audience. maybe we could organize spoken-word events, readings, letters to the editor, etc.
so yeah, i have a lot of planning to do
but most of my books and binders are with the movers, so i don't feel too badly about not starting now. once i am in my own apartment i will have more space to get organized and work every day.

i am also wondering if i should go to the ER just to see if my hand is broken. hopefully it is not, but i am just paranoid bc i broke my hand in 1997 and didn't realize it for several days, kept on wrestling, doing gut wrenches, and then had to have a 2 and a 1/2 hour surgery and get multiple metal pins drilled into my hand, which i was awake for the whole thing... and my berkeley insurance ends in 3 days and i won't have insurance until september, so i'd rather get it checked out now.
then i'll know if i can keep lifting weights, etc.

hmmm.
and in other news...
my book is in chinese and i have it! so now i know what my name looks like in chinese. it is funny cuz they read their books backwards, starting on the last page and reading right to left, top to bottom... and there are random english words in brackets throughout the book, i guess those are the ones that couldn't be translated...

disclaimer: ** anyone who is really BORED by the details of curriculum planning, funny teaching stories, etc... let me know and i can create a separate journal just for teaching entries...** i know that cathlin4, coyotefinn, jackstorm, and kungfu_k won't mind, since they're fellow teachers, but if anyone else does, let me know!

7:44 pm
random thoughts in the fading light
i love days that start out cloudy and then the sun comes out in the evening
and it doesn't seem to matter that it was cloudy all day
i love dark banks of clouds against the ocean
gleaming purple in the fading sunlight opposite
i love running and feeling strong
passing the north quincy girls' track team
i love when my walkman dies and comes back to life
i love being back here in boston
the hot muggy days and nights, feeling like a fish breathing water through gills
not having to worry about bringing a sweater or jacket for later
sweating when standing still
i love the summer rains that don't exist in california
waking up hot to the sound of rain falling all around
i love the south boston accents of the T personnel on the red line
i love that certain type of irish guy you only see here, with the boston red sox shirt and sideburns, blue eyes and sandy blond hair...
i love sitting on the green grass in harvard yard with nate
in between the majestic memorial church and widener library
talking about wrestling and
throwing cashews up at the squirrels that won't come down or be fed
i love the cobblestone brick sidewalks in cambridge
the old three-decker homes in dorchester
with back porches strung with colorful laundry and you can see what
everybody else is doing and nobody cares
walking down dorchester avenue passing vietnamese grocery stores next to irish pubs
a small vietnamese girl in a red dress on one porch
two young black girls sitting on another porch railing talking and laughing
i love talking to patrick and lynda for hours and being able to say absolutely anything to them
i love when cullan draws a picture of me with a stegasaurus
i love that caitlin is all grown up and working at stockcross
driving around quincy and i remember when she was seven years old going on thirty, sitting all tiny on joanie's couch in her plaid saint ann's uniform
i am not superstitious about anything
except for astrology, lucky numbers, and patterns and repeated cycles
which i will write more about later
i believed that 27 would be a good year, since 9 is my lucky number and 9 x 3 should be luckier still... it started out so difficult and hard (but not entirely bad, since i loved teaching) that i began to doubt but now i feel really lucky
i have a new job teaching english at charlestown high in boston
a great apartment in dorchester
and...
yeah
(big quiet smile)

ok...fine i'll do this one..

Part of being on lj is that you end up gaining a number of lj buddies. Unfortunately, as age and the drink wear away at our brains, it's easy to forget where they all came from.
Tell me where we first met yo!
then;
Post this in your journal and have your friends respond with how they recall first meeting you.

10:42 am - funny
There was this new bar in town that everyone was talking about because it had a robot-bartender.

A man walks in to see this for himself. He sits at the bar and sure enough, a robot was bartending.

The man orders a drink, and the robot asks him what his IQ is. The man replies that his IQ is 150.

So the robot begins discussing nuclear physics, hydrogen power cells, and the current state of the global atmosphere. The man is amazed. He has to see how good this robot really is. He leaves the bar and comes right back in and sits at the bar.

Again, the robot asks him for his IQ. This time the man replies "100."

So the robot discusses NASCAR, football, basketball, and the proper way to grill a steak.

The man leaves and comes back in for a third time. This time he tells the robot that his IQ is 50.

The robot replies: "So, are you Republicans really going to vote for Bush again?"
