Music is everything. The blood that runs through my body, the only constant in an ever-changing world. Today, more than ever, I regret not going for my real dream. So I'd be poor. Fighting for notariety. OH WELL! What does that matter if this misery inside won't stop? I should be one of the happiest people in the world. I have a husband that loves and supports me, friends that will love me no matter what stupid thing I do next, a great career, a place to live, and a vehicle that I LOVE to drive. But still...I need something more. I vowed I'd teach flute lessons this year to fill the void. I only have one student and that's a maybe. The Sierra Vista community Choir meets in the middle of the morning. I work!! The community college band meets on the night I have my reading intervention class. I feel as though I've chosen a path, and now I can't go back and choose the other fork in the road. I do use music in my classroom, believe me. But I can't do it at the level I would like. In the words of my principal "We have to worry about achievement scores first." THIS...is why I'm frustrated with education. What kind of a disservice are we doing to our children?? Sure, reading and math instruction need to be top notch. But what the hell? Why do they not need to be well-rounded individuals? Last time I checked, the state of Arizona has standards for art and music also. I have kids in my class who are struggling readers, but if you ask them to retell a story though art, they draw amazing things that have every element of the story in them. You can use that to build their comprehension and build their interest! Still other children in my class LIVE for the day when music is their special. I really don't get it. What happened to everything I learned in college about balanced education and differentiated instruction? Was that a lie?? You ask me to cater to the needs of the child..yet don't give me the tools. You ask me to lift them up and give them wings to fly, but tie my hands. I really don't know how much longer I can live with this. If I didn't have a husband and goals, I'd quit, complete my Mary Kay business, teach flute, and train my voice. In a few years' time, I could be in a production on ( or off) Broadway communicating to people in a way that I am most comfortable. Luciano Pavarotti was a school teacher for two years. He only had formal voice training for six. Who left this life known as the last great voice in Italian Opera? Yep, he did. Why does it need to be too late for me? I'm not trying to compare myself to a man whose talent was limitless, but what I'm saying is if you really want it, what stops a person from making it happen?? |

| Soundtrack of my Life |
[Mar. 10th, 2007|11:30 pm] |
If your life were A film, what would the soundtrack be?
So, here's how it works:
1. Open your library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc.). 2. Put it on shuffle. 3. Press play. 4. For every question, type the name of the song that's playing. 5. When you get to a new question, press the next button. 6. Don't lie and try to pretend you're cool (it will compromise the divination). ;-)
Opening Credits: Some Days You Gotta Dance! ~Dixie Chicks
Waking Up: If You See Her/ If you See Him ~ Reba with Brooks and Dunn
First Day At School: Before He Cheats ~Carrie Underwood (This one really makes zero sense, unless you count the fact that I sing it almost every morning in the shower just because I like the song.)
Falling In Love: Keep the Faith ~Bon Jovi
Fight Song: She's My Kind of Rain ~Tim McGraw
Breaking Up: What a Waste ~Miss Saigon soundtrack
Prom: Who's Your Daddy? ~Toby Keith
Life: Not Ready to Make Nice ~Dixie Chicks (hehe..this is the best one yet!)
Making babies: I'm With You ~Avril Lavigne (well, apparently we're adopting an angsty adolescent.)
Mental Breakdown: Listen to your Heart ~DHT
Driving: Fine With Me ~Little Big Town
Flashback: Wasted ~Carrie Underwood
Getting back together: Amarillo by Morning ~George Strait
Wedding: Someone Saved My Life Tonight ~Elton John
Birth of Child: One Step Up ~Kenny Chesney (Originally Bruce Springsteen) (Betsy, what's with the f-ing break-up songs for out births??)
Final Battle: This Money is Yours ~Miss Saigon Soundtrack
Death Scene: You Can't Take the Honky Tonk out of the Girl ~ Brooks and Dunn Apparently, I'm dying at a wedding. Nice.
Funeral Song: Bones~ Little Big Town (weird)
End Credits: Zoot Suit Riot ~Cherry Poppin Daddys
What a strange, strange little movie this is. |

| | Vince playing Star Craft with Will | ] | Well, evil respiratory cold has officially elevated itself to bronchitis status. grr This cough makes me sound like certain death. Hopefully it will be over soon! I just need to get through one more week. Well, not even full week. We have Monday, Tuesday, half days both Wednesday and Thursday, then Winter Break. Tomorrow will be spent doing my planning for the week. I haven't had the energy for it after teaching all week. Today was spent shopping! We got all of it done except my father and brother..the two most difficult people on this planet to shop for! Boy, am I pooped! We don't have anything for the in-laws yet, either, but we do know what we're getting. It's just a matter of heading where we need to head, which involves going to Tucson. That will be sometime this week, or perhaps tomorrow night. I just have one rant for the day. I HATE BEING SHORT!!! If I want nice pants, I have to spend $80 on petite pants at a petite store because those are the only ones that are cut to fit me properly. boo! I am looking forward to this next week, though. We are going to read the Polar Express and make hot chocolate. We are also going to read "Latkes, Latkes Good to Eat" and do a Hanukkah lesson. On Tuesday it's Christmas in Germany complete with streusel! Sehr gut! I also want to do Los Posados. Kwanzaa is on our calendar, too, but that requires research. I am doing a "Christmas around the world" theme and it's a lot of work! However, it's highly worth it because these kids aren't exposed to anything outside of Benson. I have had two parents who know what they are talking about tell me I'm doing a good job! :-) They also said they could never do it. That made me feel pretty good, since I've been so down about it all lately. I think things are finally smoothing out! It's taken almost the whole semester, but the kids have learned who reigns queen! :-) Spring semester should go very nicely if things continue one their current rate. |

| Merry Christmas...for some. |
[Dec. 6th, 2006|05:19 pm] |

Well, I've discovered there are more kids in my class than I imagined who are not going to have a decent Christmas. :-( I have one with no coat, and we're at 3000 feet. Mornings and evenings are REALLY cold! (It's not Flagstaff, but close). Two don't have backpacks. Two don't have any good clothing or shoes. The school nurse, fortunately, works through St. Vincent de Paul to help fix this problem, but not everyone is reached. The jackets are covered, but I'm probably buying a backpack and a decent set of shoes. Poor babies!! And we expect them to learn?? |

| | none | ] | I've never been more stressed yet more excited in my entire life. I'm trying to unpack and organize a classroom AND a house at the same time!! Vince is awesome and does a lot of the work at home, and then I feel bad but we're both working our butts off! We do love our duplex, though, so that helps. I was under the impression it was a full-on house, but hey. It's not expensive and it's really nice, and we only have one attached neighbor and not 5 so I consider it an upgrade! For now, my only internet access is my classroom computer. That should change soon, I hope! I have almost all decs up in my room, and I'm waiting until the last minute to do anything kid specific, ie nametags. Other than that, it's a crap ton of unpacking books and organizing supplies. IT NEVER ENDS! But I'm thrilled! |

| | TV | ] | We finished our last points in Colorado Springs on Monday, and we called the company to let them know. Then, they promptly told us to get our butts to El Paso, Texas for the last of the points there. We loaded the plane Monday night, and took off on Tuesday morning. We arrived in El Paso in the afternoon where we discovered that here idea of a compact rental car is a Ford Fusion, a full-sized sedan. haha. We also had Texas barbeque for lunch, quite possibly the best food EVER! Our stomachs bulging, we settled into the hotel and then went back to the airplane for a photo flight. It was hot and bumpy as none other, so we called it quits after less than an hour. We proceeded to the nearest Tex/Mex restaurant where I promptly got sloshed on the largest margarita known to man! Today, however, success with the pictures! We finished all of the photos in this area, so tomorrow morning, we're homeward bound!! First graders, here comes your teacher! :-) After the moving part, that is. |

OK, I have a new pet peeve. People who go to Wal-Mart and use the self check out for their $100 worth of groceries. Especially when it's about half produce. ARGH 30 minutes in line is not my idea of a good time, especially when it's only one person we're waiting for! I mean, really, isn't the self check out supposed to be an express kind of thing where you only take a few items? |

NO IT'S SUPERMAN! hehehehe Dude..awesome movie. He has been my favorite superhero since childhood. I think that the new Superman did a wonderful job, as did the actress who played Lois Lane. My only disappointment was a lack of mention for Christopher Reeve in the credits. You definitely must go see this movie. Vince and I were lucky enough to get a day off of flying due to weather, so we spent the day at the mall. Window shopping in Colorado Springs is cool! |

[Jul. 18th, 2006|09:26 pm] |
So we have some serious Air Traffic Control problems. Specifically at Los Angeles Center. All power has been lost, and most planes coming out of most major hubs are delayed. This is breaking news from our controller friend Will. We may or may not be flying tomorrow.
In other news, we went to the Royal Gorge today. THAT was cool! It's a narrow little canyon that has the Arkansas river running through it and you can take an aerial tram across the gorge.
Yesterday, George Bush said the most intelligent thing he has said in 8 years. Ironic it included profanity. It is NOT our job to get the Hezbolah out of Israel. This is a war that has been going on for centuries, and we have enough going on to protect ourselves from. I just think that if we spread ourselves too thin, nobody is going to benefit. I am glad, however, that we are trying to help them maintain diplomacy to some extent.
That's enough of that rant. I LOVE traveling. That is all for now. |

| Almost over! |
[Jul. 14th, 2006|09:50 pm] |
As this summer comes to a close, I really can't beleive that it's already about over! It has FLOWN by!! (Pardon the pun!) Really, though, it seems like yesterday Vince was discussing this job he wanted to apply for, and three months later, here we are, having a blast! Don't get me wrong, I can't WAIT to teach kids! That will be by far the most exciting part of my life. Actually making a difference.
Pretty soon we will be moving into a two bedroom house in Benson..HOUSE!! I'm SO excited!! It's been about three years since I've had a place I could really call my own with Vince. I'm really having a hard time imagining it all! We might almost be bored without roommates! haha We will be going home to Arizona on Friday the 28th of July. I start teacher training on the 31st. Geez it's all really happening!!! So why am I so scared??
I'm a little jealous, too. Vince and I are in Colorado Springs, CO because the company moved us south from Greeley so we can hit the last of our points more easily. DUDE! It's f~ing Colorado Springs, CO!! So why am I jealous? One of the other crews got to go to Lubbock, TX which we were hoping for. I really wanted to go to Texas to see what it's really all about, I guess. And to hopefully see John and Audrey. Maybe that's why I'm jealous! With that..it's time for bed for now. |
