Russia and Why Blue Peter Was Right I remember Blue Peter, the childrens' TV classic that I used to avoid watching because A: It didn't contain any spaceships, B: It didn't contain any lasers, and C: It dealt with the most uninteresting subject of 'Real Life'. I was more interested in my stories about dragons and space adventures. It's surprising how little some things change, isn't it? Of course, the show still airs today, but I haven't seen even a second of it in years (9-5 will do that to you, kids), and according to the news it seems to be more embroiled in scandals of phone competition fixing and presenter drug taking. What I'm more interested here is the Blue Peter of old, of the 80's, when I would sometimes catch a few moments before realising what it was and switching off. Something else was happening in the 80's too. Something that affected the whole world and had political effects that still echo loudly today. The fall of the iron curtain and the collapse of Russia's economy. Suddenly, the great menacing superpower on Europe's borders didn't seem quite so threatening, as it struggled to cope with a failing economy and the fracture of its border states into independent entities. Of course, nowadays we're more used to seeing Russia as a resurgent power which is throwing its weight around again, being threatening in all kinds of needless 'look, we're still scary' ways, spawning billionaires that buy all our football clubs, and being very buddy-buddy with China, the world's newest dodgy mate from down the market (we're pretty sure they're still into some shady stuff, but they flog us some cheap stuff, so we guess they're okay). But, how did that happen? Twenty years ago they were struggling to survive! Now, I'm no expert on world politics, and I'm hardly qualify as an experienced commentator on world events, but I was thinking about this the other day (as you do in bored moments). I remember one news report very clearly, watched probably when I was eating my Frosties before school one day, when it was revealed that some Russian companies (specifically, those manufacturing toilet rolls) had run out of money in such a dramatic fashion that they were now paying their employees in toilet rolls! And that's when it hit me. You see, for years Blue Peter extolled the theory that you could make pretty much anything from a few toilet roll tubes, an empty washing up liquid bottle, and some sticky-back plastic. For years we watched them make pencil holders, finger puppets, even Tracy Island (F.A.B.!) out of little more than those constituent parts. Russia proved this theory. They paid some of their employees with toilet rolls, and they ended up rebuilding the economy of an entire global superpower. Blue Peter was right. Now, if only I'd watched their show more often as a youngster, instead of blogging this right now I'd probably be finalising my bid for Manchester United. Darn. Azakir Devaris

CLASH 2008: Time To Get Serious! CLASH 2008 Saturday, March 29th Starting Point: Outside WHSmith at Victoria Train Station 1pm Start - Arrive by 12:45!The time is almost upon us! Preparations for CLASH 2008 are complete and I'm all ready to unleash a bewildering array of challenges upon the unwary teams of people brave, yet foolish, enough to attempt to undertake them. Only one team will survive prevail, only one team will claim the amazing prize, only one team will.... sorry, I'll stop. All joking aside, you can all see the starting point at the top of the post - you all need to assemble outside the WHSmith store at Victoria Train Station at or before 12:45 next Saturday (29th March), at which point I will hand out the scavenger hunt sheets and send you into battle at 1pm precisely. All teams will need the following:Zone 1 Day Travelcards for each team member A digital camera / cameraphone on which images can be immediately viewed at the end of the hunt. Fifty pence (-ish - I can supply this if you really are hard up for cash!) A pen (I'll try to have a supply of these ready just in case) There is the option of us going for a meal afterwards, I would suggest maybe Pizza Hut or something else fairly generic, but I'll try to do most of the points counting at the close of the contest so that we can announce the winner straight away for those who want to head straight off. I've picked a secret finishing location that I hope will be covered and quiet, but you never can quite tell in London. As previously mentioned, this is a test of the concept, so the unexpected is to be expected (or thereabouts!). Any incomplete teams, or anyone wishing to join in, needs to let me know by 5pm Thursday 27th March at the very latest that they will be joining. I'll assume that all complete teams in the table below are still okay to turn up, unless I am told otherwise. Confirmed CLASH Spring 2008 teams (All team names are made up by me unless you have supplied your own. Let me know your team names ASAP!): Good luck everyone! See you next Saturday! Edit: LJ seems to be mangling my table code for some reason, even though the code itself is clean. Apologies for the three /tr tags if you can see them, but they aren't my fault!! Any ideas? Earthquake?! A few people have posted on this already, but we've just had an earthquake in Milton Keynes! This happened once before in 2003, and I learned at that time that the best place to go is straight to the radio! Details as we know so far, straight from the US Geological Survey: Epicentre about 30 miles south of Kingston-Upon-Hull - that's about 125 miles north of London. Strength was 4.7 on the Richter Scale, fairly shallow. For those not conversant in 'Richter', that's a light/moderate earthquake. So far we don't know what the cause is, but for me it lasted about 10 seconds, and at first I thought the house might be collapsing (work to underpin the foundations was completed only last week!). Weird, but strangely exhilarating. Azakir Devaris

CLASH 2008 - Date Confirmed: Saturday 29th March Through a number of different channels, I've collected enough responses to determine that sticking with the original date of Saturday, March 29th would be best for the majority of signed up CLASH 2008 entrants. My apologies to those people who can't make the date - if this one is successful, I might run another, so there might be more chances to take part in future. I'll start posting a few more details over the next couple of weeks, but for now, plan to be in London at 12:30pm for a 1pm start on March 29th, somewhere in central London (exact location top secret for now!). Also, apologies to stealthgoth, who was left out of the previous table of teams posted because he is still looking for a team mate. If anyone would like to pair up with him, please post here or let him know. He's got a lot of geocaching experience in central London, so finding stuff there should be easy for him!! Also, new teams are very welcome and highly encouraged! Sign up today! It's free! Two more things: If you definitely can't make this date, please post ASAP and let me know. I'm going to start mocking up "materials" for the hunt soon, so if you could let me know, I'd be grateful. That doesn't mean you can't pull out later on if something comes up, but it would be helpful to know now. The other thing is, for teams that are formed and ready to go, I invite you to give your team an official name, if only to stop me having to refer to you all as "Team One", "Team Two", and so on. Be creative! More updates as I have them. This is going to be fun! Azakir Devaris

CLASH 2008 - Possible Date Change & Teams Couple of updates for the London Scavenger Hunt, CLASH 2008. Original CLASH 2008 posting: http://azakir.livejournal.com/70353.htmlOkay, first up: It has been suggested to me that a potential better date for peoples' availability might be the Sunday directly after sWiGGLe in April - that's Sunday, April 27th. Please could everyone who has expressed an interest in CLASH 2008 let me know in comment if this date is still good for them, or whether sticking with Saturday, March 29th would be more preferable. If you are thinking about joining in at this stage, also let me know which dates you might prefer! Yes, new entries are still very much welcome!!! Please sign up by replying in comment and listing your date preference! Secondly, just to keep things up to date, here's the current list of interested teams that I have (In no particular order!!): More people welcome! Don't delay, sign up today! Fabulous prizes to be won! Or not! Azakir Devaris

Memecide Well, I see that another meme has sprawled in a viral-like fashion across the bubbling pot of community stew that we call LiveJournal. And while I admit, this one is quite interesting and doesn't contain any of the typical 'I rate your life according to X' nonsense, I have a reputation to uphold here! And so, in response to no-one in particular: a. List seven habits/quirks/facts about yourself. b. Tag seven people to do the same. c. Do not tag the person who tagged you or say that you tag "whoever wants to do it". You think you can order me around so easily, foolish mortal?! I TAG NO-ONE!1) My green cloak, usually seen at ren faires and filk cons, is coated in a slow action contact poison that I use to dispose of my enemies by stealth. My multi-coloured shoulder dragon, Spark, is coated in the antidote. So, if you hug me while I'm wearing the cloak, and I then invite you to pet Spark, you can take it as read that I either like you, or at least don't consider you a large enough threat to have you disposed of. If not, well... 2) My first attempt at world domination was foiled by the combination of an electric kettle, a sheet of tin foil, and a domesticated house cat. Don't ask. 3) Rumours of my constructing a giant laser on the Moon are wildly overexaggerated. I couldn't source enough copper cable to tie it into the mains power supply from my secret lair. 4) My current lack of minions is completely by choice and is in no way contributed to by the current writers' strike crippling my ability to get decent corny dialogue written for them to cry out as they meet their maker at the hands of yet another hapless do-gooder. 5) I have been informed by my personal physician that my booming maniacal laughs of suspense and horror are putting undue stress on my jawline and voice. Therefore, in order to avoid long-term jaw disfiguration and vocal disparity, I now carry around a little box with a red button which, when pressed, will emit one of ten hauntingly thunderous laughs of malevolances from a selection of my favourite historical recordings, including such greats as Inspector Gadget's arch-nemesis Dr. Claw, and the legendary Tim Curry, voice actor for many a great villain. 6) I will shortly undertake my next nefarious fundraising scheme (taking over the world does require some levels of funding), involving the theft of all the boxes of Kleenex tissues from supermarket shelves just prior to my releasing a nasty, lingering, yet non-lethal cold virus upon the general population. I will then hold the tissues to ransom for an astronomical amount of money and wait for the weight of the running noses of the voting civilian masses to break the resolve of world governments and force them to fulfill my demands for payment. 7) I have two hellhounds that I keep as pets, called 'Fluffy' and 'Bunnykins'. They are adorable. Azakir Devaris

London Scavenger Hunt - CLASH Spring 2008 So! I'm finally making this official! CLASH - SPRING 2008 Central London Azakir-run Scavenger Hunt
This year bigger and better than ever - because it's the first one!
Provisional Date: Saturday March 29th (1pm Start) (Please let me know if this date clashes with anything - it is only provisional at this stage)As has been requested by some, and advertised to many more, I will be running a scavenger hunt in London on March 29th. The plan at this point is to have teams of two travelling within the boundaries of Zone 1 of the Underground network - that is to say that everything should be obtainable within this, there's nothing to stop you going outside if you really want to. Teams will be required as part of the challenges to take pictures of some objects or landmarks, so a cameraphone or compact camera (on which pictures can be immediately viewed at the end of the hunt!) will be necessary for each team. No money will be required, save that to buy a day travelcard for Zone 1 of the underground. I really want to emphasize - this is the first time I have ever tried to do this, so I am considering this as strictly a test run of the concept, hence there will be a small prize for the winning team, but there is no entry fee. If this is successful and people like it, then I may run again with a small fee to fund better prizes, or it might remain free. CLASH might become a regular event, who knows? But by being at this event and providing any feedback you think is relevant, you can shape potential future events! What Do You Need To Do Now?1. Reply to this post to register your interest, either as two-person teams or individually, if you want to take part but have no-one currently arranged to team with. 2. Reply to this post if you have an issue with the date - I will post updates as we go, and finding a date everyone is comfortable with is a main aim. 3. Reply to this post if you have any questions, preferably with the question in the reply! 4. If you have any requests for 'types' of challenge to be included (I want riddles, or I want obscure things to find, etc.), or have any suggestions for logistics (I want a three person team!), guess what you have to do? That's right! Reply to this post! I can't guarantee that I'll be able to suit everyone, but I will try to do as much as I can! 5. Keep an eye out for future posts that contain more details. Obviously, this can only work if I have a minimum number of people interested - I'd say at least three teams of two. I've had plenty of people say they are potentially interested, so I'm hoping I'll get that many! That's all for now. Welcome to CLASH Spring 2008! Azakir Devaris

Now tell me, with lots of places reporting that Super Mario Galaxy has sold far fewer copies than had been hoped, why can I not find one in stock anywhere up here? "Next up, Playstation 3. Just as soon as hell freezes over or FFXIII is a PS3 exclusive." Current Mood: SKWII!Current Music: Mii Creator Music - Nintendo Wii | | Sunday, December 9th, 2007 | | 8:15 pm |
Official Retraction Some of my long term readers... if such a creature exists in this world, or any other... may remember a post I made in mid-2005 when I wrote that I feared, on currently launch schedules and past experience, that the Nintendo Wii (Then Revolution) would crash and burn and fail horribly and lead to the possible death of Nintendo console gaming. Of course, hindsight is always 20/20 and the reality is quite different. It's incredible - where once 'Playstation' was the synonym for video games consoles among those who were not really into them, now I hear more and more people talking about Nintendo Wii, and Playstation 3 barely gets a look in. So many of my colleagues at work talk about the system, and how they want it or know a friend who wants it, or already have it. And the PSP has also miraculously failed to reach the same heady heights of the Nintendo DS, which is doing the same as the Wii in providing new innovations and ways of playing, beyond the largely retrodden concepts that other consoles offer. Don't get me wrong, there are great games out for all the consoles. Unless you're talking about the PS3, which seems to have plenty of potential, but no actual real "killer app" games as yet, despite promises for the future. But yesterday I got a chance to play Super Mario Galaxy for the first time, and it has fully convinced me that I need a Nintendo Wii. It has been a long time since I had that kind of fun playing just the first hour of a game, 'masterpiece' is really not an understatement for it. There is true innovation happening on Nintendo's little white box, and I want a piece of it. So, in contradiction to my previous prediction of two and a half years ago, Nintendo have done really well out of this generation. Long may it continue! And, since I seem to get predictions about the gaming industry wrong, lets see if we can't use this phenomenon to our advantage! -- I predict that 2008 will see a resurgence of popularity from the Playstation 3, and Sony won't be forced to learn the lesson that being arrogant and assuming everyone will buy your black painted brick for a ridiculous sum guarantees sales. -- Bungie will not announce the development of Halo 4. -- All games companies will continue to treat Europe as a poor cousin to the US in terms of rapid translation and distribution of games. -- Square-Enix will makes good on all promises that Final Fantasy XIII is a PS3 exclusive, and will continue to focus on that console for most of its games. That's all, folks! Azakir Devaris

Webhosting I'm sure some of you out there must have some knowledge of the webhosting world, and so I'd like to ask you a question! For those of you who haven't been up to dates with events (otherwise you can skip this bit), I recently went through a bit of a situation with my ISP, Eclipse Internet, who thought it would be fun to take away my web connection for five weeks and feed me a continuous string of changing excuses and fix suggestions, including failing to inform me that they had not been able to arrange an appointment for a BT engineer to visit me before I spent a morning away from work waiting for them to show up, and then did their best to prevent me from getting a refund (never mind compensation) for the time they had not been giving me a service (despite pleas to the opposite during the previous five months). The end result? In a few months I plan to move house. When I do, I will be dropping Eclipse like a hot potato coated in napalm and with razor sharp spikes sticking out. This means Sanctuary has to move, and I'd like to get this process started sooner rather than later. So, the question is this: Do any of you know of any reputable webhosting companies that are based in the UK and can provide the following as cheaply as possible.- Ability to register a domain name for me - Minimum 2Gb storage - Minimum 10Gb/month bandwidth - Minimum 3 subdomains supported - Some e-mail address + forwarding capability would be desirable Those are the bare minimums, really. I've been looking at 'eHosting', 'Dataflame', and 'Freezone' (which is, surprisingly, not free). Anyone know anything about these people, either? Thanks to anyone who can help!! Azakir Devaris

My Name's Mr. T And I'm A Night Elf Mohawk! All right, as many of you know, I'm not a World of Warcraft player, and I don't really have an interest in joining a game where I have to pay each month to grind levels and still be worse than everyone else (Okay, so it's not all bad, it's very pretty and X million gamers can't be wrong, right? NaNo: Day 13 Results A bit of extra effort over the past couple of days has led me to another milestone:

It always feels more downhill after cracking the 80% barrier. I'm hoping for completion on day 17, which is this coming Saturday. Unfortunately, yet again, it is looking like this will not be sufficient to finish the story, which is only now starting to enter its lead up to what I lovingly call the 'endgame situation'.
