Idea...a Pagan fraternal order
Most "magical" lodges were created first and foremost to propagate and promote their form of magic. As such, the system of magic becomes the focus, and the lodge structure and group mind are shrouded by the system of magic that the lodge advocates. This is the case with many orders both currently active and defunct.

What I would like to do is work with others to create a Fraternal/Magical Lodge system that promotes the ideals of the Lodge first, and then magic second. The Lodge would exist as a lodge community first and foremost, and the secondary purpose being the fulfillment of group magical working to promote the ideals of the Lodge.

What are these ideals I mention? I would like to see a Pan-Pagan (i.e., open to all Pagan traditions) fraternal system that promotes Pagan Unity, Cooperation, and Community. A system that brings us together in a spirit of fraternalism, and a system were magic can be done to help mend the fabric of the Pagan community that is constantly being torn by Witch Wars and other Pagan vs. Pagan conflict.

The ideas of fraternal lodges being created to promote unity and friendship is not new. The Knights of Pythias, for example, was formed during the Civil War to help mend the conflict of brothers and fellow citizens within the war. Other fraternal orders were created to promote friendship as well as mutual benefit societies.

Most fraternal orders are not magical orders per se, although many posses magical qualities and characteristics. Many of the magical orders we know about sprang from the roots of the fraternal orders; the OTO and the Golden Dawn are both examples of orders founded by Freemasons. As Pagans most of us are inherently magical people, so I believe it would be appropriate for a Pagan based fraternal order to also incorporate magical elements and practice.

As a member of the Masons, Odd Fellows, and Knights of Pythias I am very familiar with how a lodge system is organized and how lodge ritual works. However, while all the orders I belong to have merit and are good orders most of their members are Christian, and do not appreciate Paganism or understand the needs of a Pagan. I live and breathe my Pagan beliefs everyday without fail, I would like a lodge system that helps me to be a better person and a better Pagan.

This is why I would like to see a fraternal order for Pagans. Open to both men and woman, and incorporating magical work but not existing exclusively for magical work. The true purpose of said lodge would be to promote Pagan Unity, Cooperation, and Community, and would use magic to help promote these ideals.

The process I would like to use is outlined in the book, "Inside a Magical Lodge," by John Michael Greer. These steps are listed below.

Anyone interested in committing to this project, and who have a desire to see it come true please e-mail me at: athanasiosofspfd@aol.com

If there is enough interest I will create an e-mail list were we can work through the necessary steps to put the pieces together as a group.

Steps to Creating a Lodge

Step One: Establishing the Purpose of the Lodge

Step Two: Assembling the Core Group

Step Three: Crafting the Symbolism of the Lodge

Step Four: Putting the Pieces Together

Step Five: Considering Incorporation and Tax Exemption

Step Six: Dealing with Group Process

Step Seven: Formulating the Ritual Structure

Step Eight: Writing the Opening and Closing Rituals

Step Nine: Writing the Initiation Rituals

Step Ten: Writing the Other Lodge Rituals

Step Eleven: Learning and Practicing the Rituals

Step Twelve: Founding the Lodge

Magical Lodges

Several of my friends here in DC have been feeling similar desires for a magical lodge in their life. I've read Greer's book, and it I really became interested in this concept as well. It's just that my life is currently revolving around other spheres that it would be difficult to juggle in a new one for a lodge.

Maybe we can chat about it.

I've talked with John Michael Greer several times about the idea; he was a presenter at our Grove's festival Elysium last year, and will be back this year.

Inside a Magical Lodge is truly an excellent book, and I would love to have a local Pagan lodge. I've been wanting to do something like this for years, and now it seems that there are some people local who are interested in the idea.

Athanasios--I like this idea, and I like the notion of the focus being that of fostering a sense of community, rather than doing magic. For doing magic, I have my coven, though I would certainly not object to doing rituals in a lodge.

Another thing you might need to consider is criteria for membership. My father used to be a Freemason, and I have a friend who is in Eastern Star. For the Freemasons, I know you have to be sponsored by an existing member, and for Eastern Star, you must be a female relative of a Freemason in good standing. Would you want to do the same sort of thing, or have membership be more open?

I'll send you an email. :)

I think membership should be more open, but there should be some criteria for membership. Some things that roll off the top of my head:

You must identify with Paganism, this doesn't mean you have to be in a Coven, or a strict Reconstructionist either. It means you have to simply identify with being Pagan.

As a Mason myself, and a DeMolay alumni, I understand what you are getting at. Perhaps as the order grows a position of "to be one ask one" philosophy could be implemented.

Athanasios--Yes, I'd prefer for it to be more open, too. Exclusivity, to me, would defeat the whole purpose of the thing. On the other hand, you do want your members to be dedicated to the ideals of the lodge, rather than joining just to join. I figure it'll work itself out, one way or the other.

PS: May I add you to my friends list for [info]joyful_singer? It's my religious discussion journal.

By all means add me to your friends list, I would be honored.

I agree about joining requirements. This is why you would have a joining process, which in most lodges require a sponser and for the lodge as a whole to vote on potential lodge members. This is a good system because it gives the whole lodge an opportunity to "judge" a potential member.

Wish I had the time to do something like this. Alas, my time is short, and I'm at the point where I have to stop adding responsibilities so I can do all my jobs :). I did just buy JMG's book, though (and got him to sign it) at DMF. It's pretty good so far.

Btw, I found some info on the stuff you asked me to look for, but I need to wade through it. It's mercilessly large.

"Inside a Magical Lodge," is a great book. John Michael said that it is an official "flop," but I have found you either love it or have no use for it. I simply love it, and wish more Pagans would learn to appreciate it.

I feel that lodge systems have an value that it hard to measure. The early founders of the US were influenced by the ideals of Masonry, and many were Masons. Fraternal societies were HUGH in the United States, but are down sizing now with the advent of the internet, playstation, and other forms of entertainment.

I would like to see a return of people communicating directly with people, and to collectively, and mindfully promoting the ideals that will keep and preserve the greater Pagan community.

By all means LETS talk on Sunday!

Step three will be a blast, and will set the foundation for the other steps. I have some ideas, but don't want to do all the designing alone. It will be a fun and enjoyable group process.

And if the work is spread out among several people, utilizing all talents, then it will not be a burden on one person alone.

I totally agree, and with the group that's already started to form, it should be even more interesting and exciting! I'm pumped!

That's funny. It sure would confuse those police officers that look up F.O.P. on a google search :)
