I am very gratefully home! at last, and after successfully staving it off for six weeks, the traveling has finally laid me low and I have what is trying to be a cold, argh. But I am fighting it off with fluids and vitamins, and have gotten the Vividcon vids up. :D

I am not home yet (so no vid downloads until Wednesday, alas) but currently ensconced in a hotel in downtown Chicago, overlooking at the glowy hypnotic ferris wheel at Navy Pier and waiting for room service, after one of the most awesomest Vividcons ever. Life == \o/
I thought this was overall the strongest premieres vidshow since the second year of the con, and that continued into the challenge show. So so many good vids, omg.
BTW, a small pre-lj-cut PSA, if you are lucky enough never to have heard the song Handlebars and don't know the lyrics, do yourself a favor and wait to read vid reviews/listen to the song until you have watched flummery's Doctor Who vid to the song. Go, go.
As I haven't had a chance to rewatch vids, I am going to be talking totally haphazardly about random ones that have stuck with me enough I have something to say about them without that -- mentioned here under the cut are Climbing Up The Walls, the Doctor Who Handlebars, and Supersmart from Premieres; I Want You (She's So Heavy), How Much Is That Geisha In The Window, and White America from Challenge; and Rasputin from Club Vivid.

Aside from the awesomeness of the vids, I just had a really great time hanging out both with people I have known for ages and also with many I had either never met or never really gotten to chat more with, in groups large and small. It was not quite enough, because it never is, but it was lovely. ♥ And to put the, um, okay, I was going to go to a sundae place but that would possibly not work right in context here, so er, to crown the weekend, celli sent me her in-progress Cook/Archie story of awesome unlike the MEAN AND HEARTLESS greensilver, who will be getting sadfaces in email from me pretty much nonstop until I am appeased, because it is not fair to taunt. ;__; So I totally don't care how much the rest of my so-called friends mocked me and my David Cook t-shirt, ha. :p
And with that, I am going to have a cup of tea and write a little fanfic and maybe see about hooking up a laptop to the TV here and watching some more vids.

Hey guys -- if you're in the UK, you could help out a friend and fellow fan who is in a really rough situation, which you can read about here at her blog (http://pnhlondon.wordpress.com/). Basically, she's got a really awful rare disease, and the good news is, an experimental drug was recently developed that enables her to live a full life. Problem is, being new, it's a very expensive drug, and the UK government is potentially about to cut funding. :( There's only a tiny number of people with this disease and so they are vulnerable to being swept under the rug, and need help to raise their voices.
So if you are in the UK and have a chance, please take a second to sign the online petition, and if you can, please take a minute, too, and drop a line to the Health Minister (details at the blog)? Snail mail is best, but if not, an email will help too. And if you are not in the UK, you could help out by passing it along.
In other news, I am HOME! \o/ I spent most of yesterday sleeping and then staring around myself blankly and then most of last night not sleeping, and today I have to make a push and finish a story that is due tomorrow, after which I get to post a truly ludicrous AI story (this is at once carrot and protective measure for me; I am usually useless the day after I post something, so I am not allowed until after I finish my work).
Also, rivkat has posted the truly awesome Filthy Mind, Sam/Dean, totally an Id Vortex story, very much adult & explicit, and not safe for the truly fluffy although not an angst-wallow either -- just the right amount of hurt, IMO. I am trying to figure out the right way to describe the consent issues without spoiling, and failing, so highlight for spoilers if you want 'em: A spell causes Dean to be raped every night by spirits, but Sam does not deliberately rape Dean -- ie, this is noncon, but not partner betrayal.
Also, also, I am seeing David Cook twice in the next four days \o/, so, uh, squee warning ahead.

I am currently in the Portland airport where my redeye flight home has been delayed for two hours and now will not board until 2am. I am bitter, because if I had checked before leaving my hotel, I could have been back there napping for the extra hours. Instead, I got here early for the original time.
At least there is free wireless and I am currently sitting in a life-saving cafe with a fireplace, no music, and a glass of Bailey's & cream on the rocks. They will probably kick me out soon though to wander the halls of PDX ghostlike and all alone. ;____;
Okay, so really I will find a quiet corner and write some AI fanfic to console myself, but I am sitting in an airport for two more hours instead of on my way HOME and ASLEEP so I feel justified in indulging in some emo.
PS if anyone has any wacky AU dc/da ideas, hit me with 'em.
In the meantime, I just want to hug you all for the comments on my last post. This is what fandom is all about, seriously. ♥

Hey guys, so I really don't like wank, because it tires me out, and I'm on the road right now, but under the circumstances I'll say this much.
It is pretty clear that partly_bouncy is deliberately fomenting this wank, in what is a remarkably shortsighted attempt to drive hits to her wiki. So, if you want to discourage this behavior, please don't link to her site or her lj, as otherwise you're giving her a Google boost. That's why I'm not linking any lj names etc here. The fanthropology mods have now gotten the post down, too, for which I'm very grateful to them.
About me personally, I am completely open in my public RL bio and my pro LJ about being a fanfic and slash writer; that is not a secret at all and can be easily cited from public information under my RL name without ever linking to my fannish pseud/journal. I keep my fannish pseud/url private in order to protect my fun happy space, not to hide any factual information.
I do ask (as I have every time I have posted the information) that people who know by virtue of being in fannish circles not post my RL name linked to my fan name and especially not in googleable locations. I don't care if you share the information with other fans privately, just please mention this request to them too. No one but partly_bouncy has ever not respected this wish, because, you know, most people aren't jerks.
The worst thing really about partly_bouncy's wiki is that it is useless when it is not worse than useless. It has very little actual information, much of what information it contains is bad and inaccurate, many policies are poorly designed where they are not thinly veiled excuses for abuse, and partly_bouncy has repeatedly used her administrative powers over the wiki as a tool in personal grudge matches, thereby destroying its credibility and ensuring that even if someone really wants to help preserve fannish history, they don't want to contribute to the site.
Fundamentally, partly_bouncy has made the mistake of valuing the wiki and some hypothetical future payout over the community the wiki is about. But that community is also the audience and the pool of potential contributors for the wiki. You can't build a site that is dependent on people contributing without people, and no one is going to come to the table if they feel that they are giving their time to someone who is looking to exploit them and who will deliberately hurt them or their friends or their larger community to do that. And you can't build a successful wiki without contributors no matter how many short-term hits you drive to your site by starting wanks. It is a real shame because this could have been an invaluable service to fandom and instead it's a waste of time.
Finally, if you are ever outed, don't panic. Here's what I suggest:

And avoid linking to the fan history wiki or to particular entries, even as examples, because more hits to their overall site drives them up in google results (and also rewards the bad behavior, since more traffic means more that they can charge for ads).
This concludes the interruption from your regularly scheduled squee and fanfic routine.

Hey guys -- a quick drive-by post to point you all at the awesome work of the OTW Content Policy committee and all the focus group volunteers, who have posted their draft of the ToS and content/abuse policies, which will govern the Archive Of Our Own.
One thing I want to stress about this is, we are not just looking for a rubber stamp or a pat on the back here; we really really really WANT your comments, suggestions, and reactions. This is a draft, and there are undoubtedly mistakes, and things that could be better, and things that just could be explained better. We are actively looking for stuff that needs to be changed and improved.
It's a huge document, so if you are willing to give us your thoughts but can't make it all the way through, it would be awesome even if you pick one random section out of the middle and comment on just that. Even if it turns out that some other section you didn't get to read addresses your concerns, that is still helpful, because it tells us to link the two together, for instance.
If you have more time, thumbtacking the posts and participating in the discussion, seeing what other fans are commenting, would be especially great, if you can.

It's still fun, but because I had already seen, during the final climactic battle scene (I do not consider it a spoiler to mention that there is such a scene in a superhero movie), my mind wandered, as it will in such circumstances, to Tony Stark picking up David Cook at a Hollywood party:
Tony: Hey, you're pretty hot. Want to come back to my place? I'm a superhero, you know.
Tony: Also I'm a gadzillionaire, but the superhero thing is way cooler.
DC: I'm kinda tempted, just to see what my management would say, but I'm pretty sure it would be violating my contract in a whole bunch of obscure ways.

It occurs to me Tony would realize very quickly that he can use this approach to make it with virtually EVERY GUY IN THE WORLD, no matter how straight.

You are in a mall when the zombies attack. You have:
1. one weapon.
2. one song blasting on the speakers.
3. one famous person to fight alongside you.
1. Brain shooter/flamethrower. Since the challenge allows unlimited ammo, I will distract the zombies by firing delicious brains in their direction. While they feast, I will sneak out of the mall and set fire to it, thereby ridding the world of the zombie army, a Gap, an Express, a Banana Republic, and various other chain stores.
2. OK Go, Here It Goes Again. I feel it has the appropriate spirit for the combination of pyromania and zombie warfare, and also a nice rhythmic beat for keeping up steady fire.
3. Dean Winchester, because of his glee over zombie warfare, and I feel he would also get into the mall-destruction with the right spirit. However, I would like David Cook to be back at the motel waiting for us to return, looking like this:

Happily, I am not in a mall, and the zombie apocalypse does not appear to be happening today, so instead I can share this!
setissma has written me this absolutely gorgeous post-SPN-finale story Thunderhead, Sam/Dean, pg-13 -- just the two of them, warm and intimate and lovely.
They track time through the dull fade of the sun through the curtains, yellow orange in the afternoon, shadowed in the evening, and he has everything he needs underneath his hands.

I have still have not quite been able to face watching the finale (despite spoiling myself thoroughly), but this has definitely gotten me to edge a little further towards it, in an extremely wary sort of way.

Okay, people, you need to go over to the otw_onlinecon Stories EXTREME challenge and read some of these summaries (and add more!)
The idea of the challenge is, you make up really wacky summaries of stories with bizarre combinations of pairings/fandoms/warnings etc, which we then get to use to test the archive software to make sure it can handle it. :D And also maybe someone writes one of them!
I especially ♥ this one from mackiedockie:
Warnings: Slash, het, threesomes, overage sex, magic, bad theology, Victorian, cultish acts, human sacrifice, dubcon, OFC, possible character death. Make that probable.

Yes, for the same low price you get even MORE David Cook pimping! \o/
First up, julad reminded me that I omitted this gem from the previous round. Idol does this annual fundraiser called Idol Gives Back where they put on a slew of performances and haul in every celeb they can to coax people to give money. One of the things they did was bring on a bunch of dancers from their other reality show, So You Think You Can Dance, and among other things had them dance with the Idols on the song "Please Don't Stop The Music" to camouflage the fact that as dancers, the Idols are all really good singers.
No one ever gets more than a one or two line solo in these things, but happily, the solo DC got in this song was the "your hands around my waist" bit, and the dancer did in fact put her hands around his waist and give him a little hip-swing assist, which rather predictably led to this fanvid that takes the tiny little clip, sets it to Justin Timberlake's Sexy Back song, and repeats. Over. and over. and over and -- basically, it is half hilarious, half porn.
To continue the theme of hilarity and porn: ( three more clips under the cut! )
In non-David Cook news, the Star Trek teaser totally made me shiver. I will hate them so much if it is bad. :(
