only in dramaland [10 Sep 2008|10:59pm]
You know, having finished watching the second season of the Hana Yori Dango TV Drama, I am filled with girlish glee, but I was kind of rooting for Hanazawa Rui to get the girl.

you can also find albany in asia [03 Sep 2008|09:29pm]
From the Daily Show several days ago:

Fox News: But she [Palin] does know about international relations, because she's right there in Alaska, right next door to...Russia!

Jon Stewart: ...*cough*You're a moron*cough* But if you think about it, Alaska's right near the north pole, so she must also be friends with santa.

Dear Daily Show, never stop mocking the ineptitude of Fox News. Fox News, GEOGRAPHY.

Essentially, lolcaustastic.

lo, and behold [03 Sep 2008|05:55pm]
And then I remember how annoying tuning a shamisen truly is after you haven't played of for a while.

[info]aquafolius You don't remember any useful tricks for going from honchoushi to niagari, (or, from re-ra-re to re-so-re, as sensei would have put it) and back again, do you?

thoughts [30 Aug 2008|11:27am]
So, if I do end up going to Youmacon, the detroit convention, I'd want to cosplay, but all my costumes are back east (except Gabranth, but I'm not sure how I feel about getting to detroit, parking somewhere, not getting shanked, all while lugging that costume about).

So, I can either get a costume from home (hilarious, considering I'd have to tell my mother to assemble the bits of costume, and...yeah. Well, gogo's in mostly one piece, and Link may or may not be, I don't recall where I put him post Otakon.)

Or, I can make a costume. Since I'll be working on other, much more work-intensive costumes (re: Edgar Figaro, Twilight Princess Link, god knows what else) it would have to be easy to wear, and possibly, drive in, and relatively easy to make.

...I have no idea. Time to browse through the files.

Not that I need another costume to work on, although having an easy to wear costume would be new and different.

EDIT: Yes, there's always original flavor Tifa, which I've the build and appearance to pull off, but uh, unless I'm going with people (doubtful, unless I hang out with the anime people here) I'm not walking around Detroit by myself wearing that.

angry face is angry! [25 Aug 2008|10:50pm]
This pissed by off on principle, but then, upon further rereading, really pissed me off.

Basically, it would give medical practitioners "who have moral objections to abortion and sterilization" the right to not only refuse to perform those services, but to refuse to recommend someone else who would perform them or help the patient at all.

Abortion is always a touchy, difficult subject. I've always been of the opinion that some politician shouldn't have the right to decide what I do with my uterus and whatever's inside it. But I will, at least, acknowledge the pro-life side of the argument. There is a concern for when a fetus is considered alive. Personally, I feel that this is a problem we've created as a society. In other cultures, where infant death is rampant, most children aren't named, and thus considered truly alive, until several years old. If they die before that point, there's less to mourn.

But we make a fetus into a baby before it's developed its major organs. Before it can open its eyes - before it has eyes to open - we've come up with names and hopes for the thing, creating a social identity and life for it to possess, and making it effectively alive.

Leaving aside the issue surrounding abortion, it was actually the latter part of that sentence - "and sterilization" that truly pissed me off. I'm sorry, but what the hell? There's no life to be considered in a sterilization procedure - there's the potential for future life, but that's a person's choice, someone's decision, and I can't accept some politician suggesting that a contraceptive measure, albeit a permanent one, is morally wrong. That places an infuriating value on a woman's ability to bear children above all else, and I've no interest in being classified as a fucking broodmare.

It's always perplexed me how, if you come to a doctor and ask for a procedure to remove your uterus, you will undergo a battery of questions and psych evaluations. As if the concept of never wanting children is something so intrinsically wrong that it can't be comprehended. And yet any two people can get one of them knocked up, without much thought to the enormous responsibility they've just created. A responsibility that they may or may not live up too. If you ask me, they need the psych exam - not because they're crazy for wanting kids, but to make sure they're stable enough to support the child they want to have.

More poetically put:

"Children might or might not be a blessing, but to create them and then fail them is surely damnation."
-- Lois McMaster Bujold

no power in the 'verse can stop me [04 Aug 2008|07:49am]
So. Life has been pretty well consumed by costume-making, with is good in a way, because it stops me from constantly obsessing about graduate school (wasIsupposedtoregisterforclasses? theydidn'ttellmetoregisteryetwtfohgodahhhhhhhhhhhhh) repeated ad nauseum.

Anyway! costumes. Doing the set of judges from FFXII and Vayne from the same game. I'm aiming to have everything done (save some fitting details) by Wednesday. But so far, things are looking good.

Busy times, indeed.

Thoughts on the Dark Knight [27 Jul 2008|08:43am]
Saw the Dark Knight last night. (Yes, I realize I am behind the party. In fact, the party may have left and cleaned up by the time I've gotten here. But hey, at least overseas, the lights are still on. Hell, they're just getting started.)

Spoilers behind the cut

Why aren't you laughing? )

"Bei dem angestrebten Zeil..." [21 Jul 2008|02:00pm]
I have in my hot little hands a copy of Geschitchte Alt-Vorderasiens, one of the german texts on Mesopotamian history my professor recommended. It had to come from Belgium!

It is surely a sign of my dorktastic nature that I'm very excited by this book, even if reading it is going to be so annoying.

Ah well. It's all in the name of science! Or history, perhaps.

a stolen post [24 Jun 2008|04:55pm]
When you see this post, quote from Doctor Who on your LJ.

"You let one of them go, but that's nothing new. Every now and then a little victim's spared. Because she smiled. ‘Cause he's got freckles. ‘Cause they begged. And that's how you live with yourself. That's how you slaughter millions. Because once in a while, on a whim, if the wind's in the right direction, you happen to be kind."

"Only a killer would know that."

Anyone Game? [27 Apr 2008|12:24pm]
For another round of DistrictMancy?

Basically, it's a D20 modern system, with me fumbling around as a GM, pretending I know what I'm doing. It's set in my districtmancy universe, which means that, yes, lots of the npc's are characters of mine.

(Yes, Drake et al may show up. They promise to behave. It lets me get a better feel for the universe, and it tends to be fun.)

Anyway, character-driven, fighting, and I try not to suck too much at GM-ing.

Drop a comment if you're interested in reprising a role of giving it a go for the first time.

(Also, check out the community for some background info on how things work.

NYU is done, leaving UMich, UChicago, and UPenn to go out by Tuesday - both the FedExed parts and the online parts. I shall obsess over Yale and JHU for a bit longer, as they're due early Jan rather than Dec. 15.

I HATE WRITING PERSONAL STATEMENTS.

Oh, fuck you too, NYU.

So, I register for Intensive German class on Saturday. Tra la la. I'm excited. I check the course listing today (THE DAY CLASS IS SUPPOSED TO START) and it's suddenly listed as "canceled!"

Yeah. The fuck?

I call them up and they say that, yes, it is canceled, and no, we felt no need to inform you, and yes, it'll take a few weeks to give you back your money, and oh, what, you wanted to use the credit card that our course charge has made close to the limit to register for a course that starts next Wednesday? sorry!

Yeah. Guess who just talked to her credit card company to have a charge credited back to her account?

Fuuuck you toooooo nyu. I'm taking German WHETHER YOU WANT IT OR NOT, BITCHES.

So, after watching Transformers, I've been rewatching and reliving my love of Beast Wars, which was the shit when I was younger. (The animation is dated like all get out, but the writing is fantastic. Far more intelligent than most shows nows).

And all the transformers have beast forms, lest their robotic forms become destroyed or something. Optimus is a gorilla. Megatron? Turns into a t-rex. With an enormous head. And tiny, tiny arms. And his voice actor is fantastically british and vaguely sleezy (it's the original Megatron v.a., by the by). And the animators make his tiny, tiny arms gesticulate. All of which lead to this image.

---

SCENE

MEGATRON is standing quietly, or well, full of evil-y, about, contemplating his recent victory over the autobots.

MEGATRON: Yes, excellent. This calls for a victory drink. Someone, bring me...tea. And the crumpets!

*He attempts to drink but is defeated by his tiny, tiny arms and his large, large head.*

MEGATRON: Curse you Optimus Prime and your proportionate frontal limbs! Quickly, predacons, bring me a straw!

We change scenes. OPTIMUS is sitting in his base drinking tea delicately from a tiny cup.

OPTIMUS: Your victory is a hollow one, Megatron, for I have opposable thumbs!

---

It's funny if you're me. Or a giant dork. HONEST.

Report by 7:45 am?

Oh, you have got to be kidding me.

Excuse me, I'll be in the corner. CRYING TEARS OF SORROW. SORROW AND WOE.

(I wake up at 5:30, leave at 6:30 to get into the city by 7:30. It will take me at least half an hour to get to my training site. This means getting into the city by 7 at the latest. This means getting up at 5, probably EARLIER, and then, you know, sitting in training until 6 pm. TEN HOURS OF THIS SHITE.)

TEARS OF SORROW AND WOE.
