Disclaimer: I'm not trying to start anything, incite wank and/or anything negative. I'm just curious because I don't know the answer and it doesn't make sense to me. I just might be socially inept, so please bear with me.
I got this in my head since I was reading
ontd_political and there was this thing about Sarah Palin (omg I'm not going there) and there was this argument about Sarah Palin and feminism etc etc., and someone said something about reducing feminism to sweeping generalizations is as insulting as saying that Catholics are Christians or something along those lines.
So that made me curious.
Are Catholics Christians?
Like... I don't understand. I remember this one time downtown when some person was doing that preachy thing on the streets (where I work, this happens often, but this was way before then) and they just happened to be Catholic. I wasn't aware that Catholic churches did this (in my limited experience, I've been approached mostly by Presbyterians, Jehova's Witnessess, Evangelists and/or Protestants), but I had to stand there and listen to him because he'd approached me, made eye contact and started on his thing.
And when I could finally interject, I politely told him thank you, but I'm Christian, so could he please move on. But he wouldn't move, just kept going. A few minutes later, I told him that I'm a fellow Christian and I'm on my way to meet someone, so thank you, but I need to go. But he said he wasn't Christian. That boggled me; so I asked him if he believed in Jesus Christ. He said yes. So I asked him, "Doesn't that make you Christian?" He insisted that he wasn't Christian, but Catholic.
This went on for what was no more than 10 minutes until I got more than a bit fed-up, and walked away. I was getting odd looks because I kept telling him he was Christian, but he was insisting that he wasn't. It was an oddly frustrating but somewhat amusing experience (downtown Toronto can be quite an adventure...)
So was I wrong? Are Catholics not Christian? I have always lived with the assumption that if a person believes in Jesus Christ (in his being the Son of God and the Saviour), it makes you Christian. Am I being ignorant in generalizing as such? I understand that there are rituals and other things that distinguish Catholicism from what is widely "known" as Christianity. But they believe in Jesus Christ, right? Would Catholicism be a Christian "sect" (or perhaps denomination, not quite sure which term would be more appropriate here, I think sect?) or would it be the other way around? Do either qualify to be as an offshoot of the other?
I need help in understanding this. I'm not a very religious person (not anymore), and I've never quite understood all of the friction between various religions that exist in the world today (except Scientology, I think it's a cult). I've asked this to some of my more religiously-inclined friends and they concurred that Catholics are Christians. But said friends are all Christians too, so maybe they're just rooting for the home team, you know?
Any help on un-confusing me would be awesome.
