Long time no see again, hops.

Yeah, I know I haven't posted in a while again, even though I meant to. I've been very busy doing my research (running an experiment) for a couple of weeks, and now that I'm back home, I had to cope with some annoying little virus. Feeling better now, though, but there really isn't much to tell - I have yet to analyze the results of my first experiment, and I'm redoing it starting next weekend, so I will probably tell you more about it when I'm done with it. Other than that, I'm on summer vacation and have a lot of work to do, mostly papers to write. No exams this semester, luckily.

On another note, I thought it would be a nice idea to post a recipe from time to time, so here is a recipe for tonight's dinner, which was an easy Arabic red lentil soup ) I really like. This is my own version of a recipe from a book. Hope you enjoy it.
I'll try to keep posting in the next very, very busy few weeks. Hope you're all enjoying the summer (or winter, if you're on the southern hemisphere).

    Not-Vacation

The semester is over. I will be working on my research for the next couple of weeks, so I won't be around much. See you folks soon. E-mail me if you want to get my attention.

    Hail Xenu!

Not ten minutes ago I got some spam from the local chapter of... Scientology. They hide well, because they've been causing some shit lately, and the government doesn't like them to begin with. So they use a pseudonym. In any case, the spam includes a phone number and a fax number. This calls for some shenanigans.
    Suggestions?
    Ideas?

    Happenings of the past week

Weee! Finally, some details about what I've been up to on the past week.

Sunday - Went to the university. Nothing much to say about the morning, I spent it at the lab. Had a mean headache, though. At 16:00 I left for home, picked up a few things I forgot that morning and headed to the bus station. I boarded a bus for Jerusalem at 17:00 and got there at about 18:30. After a couple of phone calls, I took a cab to Emeq Refaim st. (the name, by the way, means "Valley of Ghosts") and there I met [info]diego001. More on that, here. ) then I boarded a bus to my cousin's place, where I was about to spend the night. I got there easily, which surprised my cousin (I have no idea why. She gave me clear directions and I knew the address). After settling down, my cousin, he boyfriend and I sat down and watched a few episodes of "Family Guy". That was much fun, and we went to bed at 23:00. I read a Discworld book, and went to sleep.

Monday - Woke up just after 07:00 but got up nearly at 08:00. Took a cold shower, because the water wouldn't get hot (I thought it was too early for the solar panel to heat the water) only to find out later that the tap is weird and that the hot water is on the cold water side. My cousin left for the Music academy where she studies, and her BF and myself boarded a bus to the central station. I took the discworld book with me. I said good by the cousin's BF at the station and boarded another bus to Be'er Sheva. Went directly to the lab, and then continued to have a normal Monday - that is, Students' seminar, food with friends at the showarma joint, an Evolutionary Ecology class and a GIS lab at the computer room, part of the Spatial Ecology course. I totally forgot some of the things I've learned in my GIS course in undergrad. But that was ok. I went home at 19:30 and did nothing special that evening.

Tuesday - Didn't sleep well that night. Woke up at 07:30 and boarded a bus to Sde Boqer (where the southern campus of the university is, where the experimental enclosure is and where leopards occasionally leap into bedrooms through the window). Met with a few fellow students, seen the enclosure and the equipment and talked with one of my advisors. Then we went to the Department seminar, which wasn't great, and back to Be'er Sheva. On the afternoon, the lab tech and I went to spread 400 traps for gerbils in some disturbed sandy area not far from Gaza. Came back home at 22:00 or so, and went to sleep after eating something light.

Wednesday - Had to wake up at 04:30, an hour which doesn't officially exist, to go collect the traps. It was hot and VERY humid where we spread the traps, and very foggy. I was drenched. Luckily, it didn't take too long and we went back to the university with 22 new gerbils for research. We stopped at a gas station for gas and I bought myself some breakfast, a very good sambusak (look it up) filled with tuna and tomato sauce. After housing the gerbils, I went home and got 3 more hours of sleep. Then went back to the university to tutor a Faunistics lab, about mammals this time. We finished at 19:30 and I went back home to sleep.

Thursday - Woke up late, after getting back all the sleep hours I've missed (yeah, I know there's no such thing. I was tired). Spent a normal day at the university, had a Parasitology class, interesting as usual, and worked on some homework, mostly GIS.

Friday - Woke up at 11:00! Woo, weekend. Went shopping for some vegetables, bread and the newspaper. Came back home and spent the entire day vegetating. Oh, I cooked something nice for dinner - potatoes and onions glazed in honey and a lot of spices. It was excellent, even if I say so myself.

Saturday - Another day of vegetating. Did absolutely nothing but eat, sleep and watch TV. I'm such a lazy ass.

    Today's happenings

As I've decided to update more, here's today's stuff:

    1. [info]diego001 has landed in Israel today. We talked briefly on the phone, which was funny as I wasn't expecting it at 09:30 or so. I hope to meet him in person soon.

    2. Things are gaining speed with the research. More on this soon.

    3. Had a seminar, a class and a computer lab (GIS, which I haven't done in like, two years) today. Very nice day, all in all.

    4. I'm grading lab quizzes in the course I'm an assistant of. Quite annoying - The students apparently distributed some answers between them while preparing for the quiz, and those answers were, well, wrong. But as these are things I explicitly talked about in the lab, they all get penalized for any mistakes they make. I think I will mention it in front of the entire class when I hand the quizzes back. Verify your info, people. I hope I wasn't too lenient in the grading so far.

    5. I replenished the fridge, which was very low on the food. Tomorrow I need to replenish the vegetable drawer.

    6. I downloaded and installed a new version of MS Office (shush, you). It's quite different - I need to get used to it.

    7. This is one of the best videos I've seen in quite some time. Check it out. Oh, and ignore the Hebrew, just run the video. I didn't manage to extract the exact location of the video itself.

    That's all for today.

    Tada!

What on earth can I post about? I know, my breakfast at the parents' place:
    1. Kohlrabi salad. simply thin kohlrabi slices with olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper.
    2. Smoked mackerel on chala bread, with a pickle.
    3. Coffee.

The train was annoying as usual - too full, mostly due to soldiers going south. At least I had a seat. It was also late to arrive to Be'er Sheva. But I wasn't in any hurry.
The advisor rightfully told me I need to get things going with the research. I feel so apathetic lately, though, and can't get over that. But I did start moving things.
This is a tentative try to post again. Meh. Can't promise anything.

Today is Tu B'shvat (15th day of the jewish month of Shvat, also known as Arbor Day). You should all go hug a tree and wish it a happy new year. You can also plant one. I should plant a tree. Happy Holiday, everyone!

    Happy Hanukkah!

Tonight is first candle. I'm gonna have doughnuts! Because they rock, even though they have like 40,396 calories a piece. We don't always light candles, but sometimes we do, because Mom loves candles.

    Movie Tiny-Mini-Review

I've just watched "Tim Burton's The Corpse Bride" with Papa and Hadi, and we've all agreed it is a superb movie. I must admit the ending was a bit... mundane for my personal taste, but every other aspect of this movie is meticulously done and very entertaining. In my opinion, the supporting characters are even more entertaining than the three main characters. The art is grotesque and satirical in a pretty british fashion, which I simply love. So, all in all, very good movie. I highly recommend it if you feel like watching something light yet artistic and high-quality.

    Elections on the way

So, incoming elections. Anyway, what I wanted to mention is that Ariel Sharon's new party is named "Kadima" (Onward in Hebrew) which, as one of his opponents kindly reminded us, was the name of a newspaper edited by Mussolini prior to his "elevation" to the post of Il Duce. I find this quite amusing.

    Nothing Much

Just back from the pub, where I won two rounds of pool, the latter of which was won after Papa (who was in the competing duo) inserted 5 balls in a row. Hadi and I managed to come back from this lag, and won the game against him and Ran. I haven't played in years, and I have yet to decide whether I like the small table or not.

    Singing Mice

This totally rocks. A new scientific article published on PLoS shows that male mice SING, like songbirds, in ultrasound when meeting females or their pheromones. This is amazing, and therefore I give you, LJ Friends, a challenege:
Listen to the following two WAVs and try to guess which one is a singing mouse (frequency lowered for the human ear) and which one is a Swamp Sparrow.
    Number One
    Number Two

    No cheating, please.
And now, The Vienna Phylharmonic Orchestra and the Hemlin choir of singing mice!
