I think I'm posting this to see where others have been as much as to show where I've been.

9:26 am - NYT article, Odysseus and the Eclipse
|
Odysseus and the Eclipse:
The two scientists derived a possible chronology from astronomical references in the story, including the stars by which Odysseus navigated, the sighting of Venus just before dawn as he arrives at Ithaca, and the new moon on the night before the massacre of the suitors and the presumed eclipse. On the basis of their analysis, the scientists said, these three “references ‘cohere,’ in the sense that the astronomical phenomena pinpoint the date of 16 April 1178 B.C.,” adding, “The odds that purely fictional references to these phenomena (so hard to satisfy simultaneously) would coincide by accident with the only eclipse of the century are minute.”

So I have this appliance that's supposed to take milk from me and get it into a bottle, right? Only the power cord stopped working, and it doesn't work well at all on battery. Now, I've got various power cords around the house, and I gamely tried a couple of them out with said appliance, only to realize that not all power cords are created equal: some of these cords made my appliance work faster and harder! This is a good thing, to my mind, but I'm wondering if it's not such a good thing from the appliance's or motor's point of view. Specifically, the output on the new power cord is 12 VDC (volts direct current?) and 1250mA (????), while on the old, it's a lousy 9 VDC and 600 mA.
Can anyone tell me if something awful will happen if I use this cord with the appliance? I don't want to burn out the motor or shock myself, or court any number of other unforeseen-by-me possible bad outcomes.

7:29 pm - BSG icon help?
|
|
I really want a picture from the end of this weekend's BSG episode as a userpic: Adama alone in the raptor, reading. (I think that's not any kind of a spoiler.) Can anyone help me make one? I can resize an image, but I don't know how to find/make the image.

Meme from harryflashman, and a happy birthday to him as well.
Go to this site (http://quotationspage.com/random.php3), and keep hitting the random button until you find five quotes that "resonate" with you. Then list them in your journal.
Let tears flow of their own accord: their flowing is not inconsistent with inward peace and harmony. -Seneca
What an immense power over the life is the power of possessing distinct aims. The voice, the dress, the look, the very motions of a person, define and alter when he or she begins to live for a reason. -Elizabeth Stuart Phelps
Everything is connected... no one thing can change by itself. -Paul Hawken
I've grown to realize the joy that comes from little victories is preferable to the fun that comes from ease and the pursuit of pleasure. -Lawana Blackwell, The Courtship of the Vicar's Daughter, 1998
If you don't make mistakes, you're not working on hard enough problems. And that's a big mistake. -Frank Wilczek

That Elizabeth Mitchell You are my Little Bird CD is awesome.
There's a song in there that's in a combination of 4/4 and 9/4 time. 9/4, not 9/8, as far as I can tell (definitely no triplets). This is heady stuff for adults. I'm glad my kid's getting a taste of it.

We need to get some kind of digital video camera. Anyone have any recommendations or warnings, or generally know what to look for? Right now, the planned use is standard parental stuff -- short videos of the baby to send to family. In the long run, we may want to take longer video as well.

Here's a hint: Don't glue the instructions to a piece that needs to be used in the second of eight assembly steps; it makes your claim to be "the easiest crib to assemble" ridiculous.
