Today I decided to cut school and take a trip to DC with Erik to see some sights that we normally wouldn't see on a weekend. And now, a review of what we did, in order of appearance:
Bureau of Printing and Engraving
They make money here. The tour was free. It wasn't a fantastic tour, but it was interesting to see the process used to make our cash. The paper is a blend of linen and cotton and is made in MA somewhere. It takes approximately 2 months to crank out those bills. The highest denomination of bills printed now is the $100 bill. Notes in higher denominations have not been printed since the 1960s. $2 bills are still printed, but only when the Federal Reserve makes a request. I learned some other trivia, but I won't bore you with the rest of it.
Archives
I can't tell you how awesome it was to see the Constitution and the Bill of Rights up close and personal; especially since my kids were reading an article about the First Amendment in class, and because Erik and I watched HBO's John Adams mini-series. It was also really neat to see some of the other documents that are kept in the Archives building.
Lunch at Potbelly's
Nothing too exciting about this. But it was tasty.
Library of Congress
The architecture in the Jefferson Building really is as incredible as they build it up to be. Did you know that Thomas Jefferson had over 6,000 books in his personal library? These books were the building blocks of the Library of Congress. They were purchased from Jefferson's estate for something like $23,000. A good chunk of them were destroyed in a fire, but almost all have been replaced with other copies. As an English teacher, this was a great stop.
The Supreme Court
We were very happy that the super nice security guard told us of another entrance to the Supreme Court so that we could bypass the annoying school groups. While we weren't able to see court in session, we were able to get a peek at the courtroom and snap some pictures.
U.S. Capitol
This was an accidental trip. After we left the Supreme Court, we decided to go to the Botanical Gardens to see what flowers they had outside the building. Well, as we were walking down the street, Erik noticed some paper on the ground that looked like tickets to something. Tickets they were. Passes to the Senate Gallery, in fact! So away we went to see the Senate in session. Notable Senators who we saw today: Kerry, Kennedy, Specter, Lott, and Lieberman. I'm sure many of the others were also notable, but these are the ones we were actually able to pick out of the crowd. We were even able to sneak up to the rotunda, but a security guard spoiled our fun when he told us that only people on group tours were allowed up there. Boo. At least Erik still got a picture or two!
Dinner at China Express
Our favorite Chinese place. I love the dumplings. I'm quite full now.
We essentially had a 12 hour day today. All of the building tours were free. We only had to spend money on metro, food, and parking for the metro. My feet are tired, but it's worth it.
In other news, J.Crew offers a 15% discount to teachers. This is bad news for my bank account and credit cards, but life will go on, and I'll have a few pieces from J.Crew in my wardrobe (p.s. their pants fit me like a dream...).
I'm not very excited about going back to work tomorrow, but there will only be two more days of work before the weekend arrives. Next week are HSA's. For those of you who are not familiar with this form of standardized testing hell, well, be glad you aren't.
And that's all for now. Until my next update...

I have managed to age another year... gracefully, I hope. Erik and I celebrated the event yesterday with dinner from my favorite Indian restaurant. I received many birthday wishes from friends and family (thank you!) and I generally had a pretty nice day. Even my kids at school were well-behaved (and they didn't even know it was my birthday). Perhaps I'll write another blog another time that details how I feel about getting older.
I've done some serious shopping for some spring/summer clothes. What I've been in major need of are shirts that aren't t-shirts, but aren't necessarily work shirts either. I found a few at Target that I liked, and I made a stop at GAP, Forever 21, and Boscovs today as well. I need to return a few pieces because I never try anything on in the stores. I've got issues, I know. But I'm pretty happy with what I've gotten.
The school year is slowly coming to a close. We have 25 days left (I think). Next year I'll be teaching 2 sections of the curriculum I have now (Reading) and 2 sections of Standard English 9. It's going to be nice to get back into the English loop, but I definitely don't look forward to having to attend department meetings again (Reading meetings are usually at lunch sometime during the month). It should be an interesting year next year.
As for the rest of my life, well, it is what it is. Erik and I attended the wedding of one of his friends who lived in the same neighborhood as Erik did when he was growing up. The ceremony was a quick one -- 15 minutes including processing in and out -- and the reception was a good time. We both admired the bridesmaids' dresses -- very flattering on every one of them. And the favors were pretty nifty, too -- glass photo coasters. Everything was very tastefully done. I love scoping out weddings.
So that seems to be about all I've got to say today. I've had a nice snack of Special K with chocolate chunks (very tasty) and I think it's about time for me to go watch American Idol (even though I've missed half an hour already because I thought it was on at 9 tonight...). Later pals.

It's musical season for the high schools in the Pittsburgh area. It's funny that no one around here in Baltimore seems to be as into musical theater as the people in Pittsburgh are. It's kind of sad, actually. I miss the hype. I was browsing through the Pittsburgh Post Gazette's online edition and was reading up on what shows the schools in the area are getting ready to showcase. It's sad, but I find myself feeling a little bitter. In fact, so bitter that I can't bring myself to ever see another St. Joe's musical. Why? I think it has something to do with Mr. C. Don't get me wrong, he was an awesome theater teacher and director and theater mentor. I loved my time on the stage with him in charge. I think my bitterness is a result of the year we did Children of Eden. That was the year that Mr. C. announced to all of us that he would no longer be doing the shows for the school. In fact, he wasn't going to even be the choir director anymore. As a Junior, thinking big about what our show could be like with him in charge during our Senior year, that stung. A lot. It was like my class wasn't worth it or something. I especially started to feel that way when he went back to directing the shows. I've always felt a little cheated.
We had an okay show during my Senior year. It wasn't the cast that was the problem. It was the choice of the show and the direction of it. It just wasn't what we were used to. We had come off of three years of some pretty big story-telling shows: Jesus Christ Superstar, Fiddler on the Roof, and Children of Eden. And what did we get Senior year? Cinderella. It was depressing. It felt demeaning. I was never proud of that show.
So it makes me really sad to see that St. Joe's is doing Once on This Island as their show this year. It's such a great musical. I keep thinking... that could have been us. It's been almost 10 years since I was in high school. And this is the one thing I hang on to. The one thing I just can't let go.

Long weekends are the best invention in the world. I took this past Friday off from work so that Erik and I could spend the weekend in New York City. We stayed in Hoboken, NJ with Erik's friend Ben, and his fiance Katherine. We had fantastic weather, and were able to really enjoy our time there.
Thursday
We left for New York as soon as Erik could get home from work. It was a fairly easy drive, though as Erik put it, not very relaxing. Highway driving is rarely relaxing. It took us about 3.5 hours to get from Erik's house to our friends' apartment in Hoboken. Hoboken is one of the best suburbs of NYC (or so I'd like to think). Grant it, the streets are tiny, and almost every affordable place is a walk-up (new condos are many extra $$), and you definitely don't want to have a new car here (or any car for that matter -- parking = pain in the arse), but it's got almost everything you could need: decent public transportation, great restaurants, shops, parks, and schools. So therefore, I deem it to be an awesome place. Ben and Katherine made us dinner, and after dinner we took a nice walk around the area and down along the Hudson River.
Friday
We decided that in order to make the most of our day, we would go into the city with Ben when he went in for work. We took the bus in, walked a few blocks, and poof, we were at Ben's office. He went to work, we went to have fun. We took in most of the touristy sites, stopping off at Good Morning America and The Today Show to see the filming. We skipped going to the top of the Empire State Building ($20/person = not really worth it), but we walked all around the city, checking out Rockefeller Center, St. Pat's Cathedral, Grand Central Station, and Battery Park. We tried to see Ground Zero, but construction prevented us from really seeing anything, so we met up with Ben again for lunch down on Wall Street. We were feeling a little tired after lunch, so Erik and I hung out in Herald Square while Ben finished up work (his office is a block away from the Square). I actually got to see my dad for a few minutes; he was in NYC with some students filming the Pope's visit. That was pretty neat. Ben left work around 4:30pm, and we went to a place called Social to meet up with Ben's friend who was managing the place that night. We scored some sweet deals from him, then met up with Katherine and had some pizza at a place called John's. It was pretty late after all of that, so it was back to Hoboken for a good night of sleep.
Saturday
We all woke up and got out the door around 10am. We stopped at a great bagel shop in Hoboken and had breakfast in the park overlooking the Hudson. We took the bus back into the city and wandered around Central Park for most of the day. Unfortunately, we missed seeing the Pope's motorcade by about 5 minutes. Oh well. At about 4pm, we decided to head back to Hoboken so we could change and then go out to dinner there. After dinner, we went out for about an hour or so, but we were all pretty tired, so we left around 11pm and headed back for some sleep.
Sunday
Sunday was travel back home day. We left Ben and Katherine's around 10am, and got back to Baltimore around 2pm (including a stop for lunch).
It seems that everyone in NYC owns and constantly uses a Blackberry. Public transportation is definitely the way to go. Erik and I were both experiencing a bit of sensory overload. I definitely don't think I could ever be comfortable living in the city. You really can't get a whole lot for your money there. Ben and Katherine had a nice place, but it was a typical city place. I could never afford to work in NYC. It's not so much the place to live or general expenses. It's more like I couldn't afford to DRESS for work in NYC. Seems like everyone wears a label or is wearing the latest trends. I just don't think I could keep up. But I had a great time visiting, and I definitely look forward to another trip up there sometime soon.
That's all for now. More later as I think of it...

I can't really say that life has been uber exciting in the recent weeks. I'm almost done with my grad classes for the semester. I have one more class of my 4:30 session, and three more of my 6:30 session. Then I have a little reprieve until June, when I start back up again. I don't feel that I'm as swamped with work now as I was with work last semester. So that's a good thing.
I've got my tentative teaching assignment for next year. I'll have the same curriculum that I do now, teaching two sections of it to 10th graders, and one section of it to 9th graders. I'm pretty happy with that, as I've got everything already prepared. Hopefully, I'll also have an LCD projector (finally).
Erik and I are going to New York City next weekend. We're going to stay with a friend of his, who lives in New Jersey, and go into the city with him on Friday when he goes into work. I haven't been to NYC since I was a senior in high school, so I'm looking forward to this trip. I'm not sure what we'll go see yet. I'd like to see the Statue of Liberty, and Ground Zero. As for the rest of the trip, who knows.
Some of you may remember that some of my friends down here are members of a kickball league. Erik and I have since stopped attending games, mostly because of grad school commitments (although Erik is done), but the original team is still pretty much intact. Anyway, point of the story... I got a message last night from my one roommate, Katrina, telling me that she was in an ambulance with Matt (her bf, Erik's old roommate) and they were on the way to ER as Matt had a broken leg. Long story (really long so far) short, he broke the tibia and fibula (is that what those bones are called?) and has to have a rod permanently implanted in his leg. It's craziness. I can't say that I've ever really known anyone with a broken leg. Isn't there a bone in the leg that when broken can be an incredibly serious injury? Not that this injury isn't serious enough...
I appear to have caught another cold, so I'm not really feeling like my usual self. I was a major bitch in school today, which I do feel bad about. And I'm not exactly that nice to my 3rd period class anyway. Of course, if you were their teacher, I'm not so sure you'd be feeling any differently... Point of this little blurb is: I'm tired of being sick. I'm looking forward to the summer, when colds and such sort of take a vacation for me.
So that's what's been going on in my life. What's new with you?

Spring Break is just about over. I've been fairly productive during my time off from work. At least, I think so. Of course, I did absolutely nothing for work. I brought papers home to grade and I probably could have planned for the next unit, but I just wasn't feeling any of that.
After almost 5 years of living in Maryland, I'm finally on my way to actually switching title/registration for my car to this state. I got my Maryland drivers license yesterday. I almost cried when they took away my PA license :-( I got my car inspected yesterday so that I could get title/registration done soon. Just waiting on the arrival of my title at the MVA. And a switch in insurance, which will be happening within the next month. Five years... it's taken me long enough...
My parents are coming down to Baltimore this weekend. We're going to go into DC to see the cherry blossoms. My mom has never seen them. It should be a real nice time with them.
So that's the latest from me. Hope all of you are up to exciting things.

Spring Break is almost here! Four days of work, and then 6 days away from it (not including weekends). I plan to be rather busy, as I'm trying to get my car's registration switched over to MD. We'll see how this goes...
I'm a little sad that I won't be able to get home for Easter this year. With gas prices as they are, I just can't afford it. My parents are coming down to Baltimore the weekend after though, so I guess in the end it's okay. We're planning a cherry blossom trip to DC with them that weekend. It should be nice!
Yesterday Erik took me up to the outlets in Hagerstown. God knows that I love to shop... It's unfortunate that some of the outlets don't really seem like outlets. Take for example Ralph Lauren. When a sweater is on "sale" for $50, I really have to wonder how good of a deal that is. Anyway, I picked up a new pair of pants, button down (short sleeve) shirt, and two sweaters at GAP, and a sweater and button down (long sleeve) from Tommy Hilfiger. I also got a new pair of sneakers from Adidas. Not a bad day. It makes me want to go out and scope more deals!
Lots to do in these next few days. Specifically, find a job for the summer. I hate this time of the year for that reason...

As much as I love snow days, I can also not care too much for them. I have a nasty habit of going shopping on snow days, which obviously isn't good for my bank account. Take today for example. Erik and I are going to a wedding tomorrow, and I wasn't feeling 100% about the dress I was going to wear. So I figured I'd go to the mall and see what the department stores had to offer me. I found a winner at Macy's, and dropped $140 on it. I got my hairs cut yesterday ($55) and needed some new styling products. I loved the stuff my hairdresser used on me, so I went to the AVEDA store, and spend $100 on styling goods. But my hair looks awesome, and feels awesome, too. I thought about stopping off to have my nails done, but I wasn't really in the mood for that. Thinking about it now, I probably should have.
Anyway, what else has been happening? In all honesty, not too much. Work has been about the same. It's exhausting most days. I have an observation coming up next week on the 28th. Grad school isn't too bad, but I should probably get started on my final projects before the due dates sneak up on me.
Nothing else right now. Waiting on Erik to get home from work. Not sure what I'll get into right now...

Sometimes the best part of being a teacher is the fact that there are random days that are no-school days. Take today for example. It's primary election day in Maryland. Most of the public schools are closed today because many of their schools are used as polling places. I love it.
Yesterday was a looooong day at school. We had an evacuation at about 12pm, then were brought back into the building around 12:30ish (maybe?) to sit in classrooms in the new wing until 2pm. I'm not really going to go into detail about everything, but suffice to say, it was a very tiresome day. Then we had a department meeting after school. Until 4:15. Again, I won't go into that.
So my knee has been bothering me all weekend. It got to the point yesterday (actually, Sunday) where I was having major pain every time I bent my knee. I could barely pull pants on and put shoes and socks on. I called my doctor, but of course, wouldn't be able to get an appointment with her until next week sometime. So they sent me to Patient First. I got there at 6:30. Two and a half hours later, I was sent home with an ace bandage, some super-strength pain reliever, a digital copy of my x-rays, and a summary saying I had to see my primary care physician in order to get a referral for orthopedics. Back to square one. Long story short, after lots of phone calls today, I have an appointment with orthopedics for tomorrow at 1:45pm. I've got to have another round of x-rays, and I'm sure I'll be told that I need to have an MRI done, then make another appointment with orthopedics to review those. Fun.
The weather here isn't too fantastic. It's cold and it's sleeting, or raining, or something, off and on. It's not pretty outside. A delay tomorrow morning would be rather nice...
I've abandoned my longer update for now. I'm just not motivated enough to work on it. So maybe some other time.
For now, I'm at home. In Pittsburgh. I decided to surprise my family with a little weekend visit. Marissa and my brother were the only ones who knew about it (I needed Marissa to pick me up at the airport). Erik was supposed to go skiing this weekend with some of his friends, which is why I decided to come home. But now Erik's ski trip is canceled because we've had such warm weather lately. No snow means no ski. Grant it, some of the trails where they were going to go are open, but not enough to make the trip worth it. So he's at home and I feel bad that he didn't get to go on his trip.
Since I've been here, I've seen one or two things that I haven't seen in a while. Here's one:

Mmmm. Snow.
Four-day week of work coming up. Then another. I like that. Maybe I'll get a hairscut on Tuesday...

I'm working on a big update. Really, I am. I'm just a little slow to type it out. And a little busy. Stay tuned folks... This writer isn't on strike...
Seems that just as I'm starting to get over one thing, another things starts. This afternoon in school, I discovered that I was covered with hives. I have a feeling that the cause of this allergic reaction was my shirt. I washed a load of clothes last week, and the fabric softener ball hadn't completely emptied in the wash. I ran everything on another cycle, but I have a feeling that the detergent stuff didn't wash out of the clothes completely, and this probably caused a reaction when it hit my skin. It seems to be the only logical thing I can think of, as I haven't used any new soaps in the shower, lotions, or eaten any new foods. I showered when I came home, using a body wash with oatmeal, and then used a lotion with the same base (ant-itch). I'm hoping that it clears up by tomorrow. I'm not in the mood to go through the day itching.
My kids weren't too bad today. It's amazing the difference that missing one or two kids in one period can make. And they apparently weren't too bad for the subs last week either. *breathe huge sigh of relief here*
In my rush to get out of school so I could get home and into the shower, I forgot to pack some of the essays I had wanted to grade. Dammit. I really need to get on those soon so I can get them finished.
I'm anxious to get back to working out, but I've been trying to make sure that I'm fully recovered from this stupid cold. I'm going to try to go tomorrow, but I'm not going to push it. I want to get rid of these extra pounds I put on over the holidays though. Of course, don't we all?

The new year has begun and I kicked it off with a nasty cold/flu thing. I went back to work on Wednesday, but was kept in bed both Thursday and Friday with muscle aches, an upset stomach, and every other sick symptom you can dream up. I ate a total of about 12 saltines over a span of 2 days and tried to drink as much water and gingerale as I could. I finally ate some real food late Friday night, but I was barely able to finish it. In any case, I'm back to eating real food now, and I'm starting to feel better. I say this now. I'll probably feel like I'm on my deathbed again tomorrow.
Not much else has happened in the new year. It's been pretty uneventful, which is good. And I don't seem to have much else to say today either. So that's that for now. The end.

This weekend was a little sad for me because I had to leave Pittsburgh and come back to Baltimore. I miss my family. Lots. But we had fun while I visited.
By Friday, I had yet to find a shrug for my new dress. So my dad accompanied me to the Monroeville Mall so that I could see what Express might have to offer. Jackpot. Found a shrug in both silver and black. And in true Sarah Scores Awesome Deals fashion, I scored an awesome deal on them. Originally, each was $39.50. At the register, I got them both for $29.50. Two for less than the price of one. Sweet. After that, my dad and I wandered over to Ritz Camera. I've been looking for a new camera, and really wanted to get the one that Maria Sharapova advertises (Canon SD630). Well, Ritz didn't have it, but said they'd call when they got it back in stock. It's okay. I was just looking anyway. We stopped by GAP. No good deals there. In fact, the price of jeans has gone up ridiculously. Or maybe I just never noticed it before. We then decided to wander over to Best Buy to see if they had my camera. No dice. So we had lunch at Don Pablo's and called it a day. Or so I thought. On the way home, dad said something to the effect of, "Do you want to see if our Best Buy has your camera?" Might as well, right? Well, they didn't have it, but they had a really nice Sony CyberShot. I was drooling. Dad was like, "Is this the one you want?" I said that it looked pretty tasty to me. So he called a worker over and it was soon mine, in addition to a memory card and carrying case. My dad rocks. He said that he had wanted to get me a camera for Christmas, but wasn't sure which one I wanted, so he figured he'd take me out and we'd buy it together. So now I have a new camera! Yay! Erik arrived later that evening and we relaxed at my house for the night.
Woke up Saturday and ran some errands before going to our cousin get-together. Good times followed:

Erik and I both woke up on Sunday feeling like crap. Figures. And we had to drive back to Baltimore. Nothing like 4 hours in a car during which every part of your body aches and all you want to do is curl up in bed. We got home, got comfortable, and tried to get better. I woke up today not feeling fantastic, but definitely not feeling as bad as I did yesterday. Erik is feeling better, but I don't think we're going to go to the New Year's party tonight. We're going to wander up to the movie store in a bit to see if we can at least get the new Bourne movie. This is all well and good. Erik isn't a huge fan of New Year's anyway.
Wednesday is back to work day. I'm hoping that I'm least feeling more functional by that time than I do now...

This year for New Year's, we will be attending a new party. Our friends who hosted the party in the past have moved out of their house and to new places, resulting in this new party idea. Lucky for me, my one roommate's boyfriend lives up the street from us with a few of our other friends, and they have decided to host the party this year. Unfortunately, it's no longer the kind of "come however you want" party that we were used to and comfortable with. In the past, we all usually wore nice jeans and nice tops, brought whatever we wanted to drink, and had a nice time in a relaxing situation. Half of us would attend that party, and the other half would go to DC for a more formal event. This year, there is no DC crowd. In fact, they're the ones hosting the new party. So for $15, we can dress up in cocktail attire, eat some appetizer things and drink some drinks. Because of this, I needed a dress.
So off to the Mills Mall I went yesterday. And I scored a HUGE deal. Gigantic. I mean, so fantastic, I'm not sure I can top it. The dress was originally $98. It was marked as reduced to $50. Not bad. I took it to the register and it rang up as $24. I added my 20% off shopping pass and got this $98 dress for $19.60. Yes. That's it. $19.60. My jaw was on the floor. I then proceeded to buy a $30 necklace for $3.49 and I was good to go. I love deals like that. And this dress will also double as a dress to wear to our friends' wedding in February. Now I'm just in search of the perfect shrug to go over top of it.
In other news, it seems that I have finally gotten sick. I started to feel cruddy on Christmas Eve. I had a tickle in the back of my throat, so I knew something was coming. The last few days it's gotten a little worse. I'm probably going to go soak in the tub in a few minutes in an attempt to soak whatever this is away.
My dad took me to see National Treasure: Book of Secrets today. I thought it was a pretty good movie. Of course, I like treasure hunting movies that revolve around history and puzzles and stuff like that. I recommend it, though don't blame me if you don't like it. It's probably not a movie for everyone. And the theater was packed. Seems that there's the possibility for a third movie in this series... Saw lots of posters for the new Indiana Jones movie. That's due out May 22. No preview yet.
So this is all the news that is news. Coming up: Erik's arrival here (Friday?), cousins dinner (Saturday), and back to Baltimore (Sunday). I hate to have to leave here so soon...

One of my sister's friends did something I thought was kind of interesting on his blog as a way to remember the past year. Instead of simply writing down all the things that happened, he went through and did a year in pictures. As a teacher, I'm all for "borrowing" from other people (the first thing they teach you how to do in teacher school is how to beg, borrow and steal) so here's my year in pictures (be warned: it's long):

We're one day closer to winter break at school. Can't come soon enough, as I grow more and more irritated with my 3rd period class every day.
I think I have all of my Christmas shopping COMPLETELY finished now. I had gotten the main gifts I wanted to give on Black Friday but there were some little odds and ends I've been picking up along the way as well. Erik's gift is partially here. I had a mess of a time with his gift this year. I don't even want to talk about it. The second part of his gift may arrive between December 18 and December 24. I don't know what to do about that yet, especially since I'll be leaving this Sunday for break. But I think it will get here in time. I'm crossing my fingers.
I have a huge list of things to do before leaving for home, including a list of things I need to pack. I just hope I remember it all and take everything I really need. Erik may or may not come up the weekend before New Years. We'll see how the weather is and that will be the final determining factor. I'm hoping he can come up.
My sister is coming down Thursday and spending the weekend here with me. We'll leave for home on Monday. I'm hoping to be able to take her down to DC to see the National Christmas tree. I thought that might be kind of cool to do.
Not much else happening around here that's really exciting. Just counting down the days until I'm done at work...

In an effort to get myself psyched up (and help me stay awake) for my last Tuesday night class of the fall semester, I have armed myself with Coke Zero and M&Ms. But I ate those already. But I still have my Coke.
My insane amount of work has decreased ever so slightly. Up left on the chopping block:
- Journal critiques (2)
- Case study
I can do this. I also want to polish up my PowerPoint presentation, after seeing some awesome ones last night. Okay, so they weren't all awesome. In fact, some were pretty dull (hello! every hear of backgrounds?) but there were a lot who did a great job of citing sources, which I don't think I really did so well.
This weekend was Christmas tree hunting with Erik and his family. Always promises to be a good time, and this year did not disappoint. Erik and I spent Sunday night decorating his tree. My roommates and I bought a tree last week and it is now decorated also. I love Christmas. Mostly for the decorating part :-)
I figured out how to get pictures from my personal collection onto my phone to act as backgrounds. Took me long enough. And it really wasn't all that hard either. I'm a dummy sometimes.
Not much else to say right now. I brought my laptop to work on some things before class tonight, but you can see where that's gotten me... I'm so productive...
