10:08 am - I love the smell of failure in the morning.
Chairsniffer denies quokka rumours. Oh my god. Oh my god oh my god. How fucked is your leadership when people are asking you "so, I hear you like molesting marsupials?"

The victorian liberals continue their slide into unelectability

Costello throws a tanty.

01:38 am - see y'all on the flipside
You called me last night, on the telephone,
and I was glad to hear from you 'cause I was all alone.
You said, "It's snowing, it's snowing! God I hate this weather!"
Now I walk through blizzards just to get us back together.

We met in the springtime at a rock-n-roll show.
It was on the Bowery when it was time to go.
We kissed on the subway in the middle of the night.
I held your hand, you held mine, it was the best night of my life.

'Cause everyone's your friend, in New York City.
And everything looks beautiful when you're young and pretty.
The streets are paved with diamonds and there's just so much to see.
But the best thing about New York City is ... you and me.

Statue of Liberty, Staten Island Ferry, Co-op City, Katz's and Tiffany's, Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge, The Empire State where Dylan lived, Coney Island and Times Square, Rockefeller Center ... wish I was there.

You wrote me a letter, just the other day.
Said, "Springtime is coming soon so why don't you come to stay?"
Packed my stuff, was on the bus, I can't believe it's true.
I'm three days from New York City and I'm three days from you.

'Cause everyone's my friend, in New York City.
And everything looks beautiful when you're young and pretty.
The streets are paved with diamonds and there's just so much to see.
But the best thing about New York City is ... you and me.

'Cause everyone's my friend, in New York City.
And everything looks beautiful when you're young and pretty.
The streets are paved with diamonds and there's just so much to see.
But the best thing about New York City is ... you and me.

You know those movies where it really looks like they put all the good bits in the trailer? Iron Man is not one of those movies. Probably my favourite of all of the Marvel movie adaptations so far. It rocked my socks, and Robert Downey Jr. is brilliantly cast.

Without giving away any spoilers, the very first piece of music you hear in the movie makes it pretty clear what sort of movie you're in for. My work bud Mike and I went and saw it, and when the music started we looked at each other and said "Oooo yeah. Damn".

In other news, I'm partially packed. The little fuzzybums are off for 6 weeks in a cat motel tomorrow morning. I'm flying out Saturday morning, arrive in NYC on Saturday evening NYC time. For those of you in NY, I'm staying at 24th St and 7th Ave. I'll pick up a US SIM card while I'm there - I'll make a locked post later with the number.

Also, if you want me to bring you back something from NY, let me know.

09:29 pm - busy
Yeah, not posting much lately. Life's been all topsy-turvy. On the plus side, in just over 2 weeks time I'm getting on a plane to spend 6 weeks working from the Google New York office. Darn, huh. Springtime in New York? With work paying? Darn.

I didn't realise that LOLcats and the anti-scientology group Anonymous came out of the same place. All that and much more in this fascinating piece: http://citypaper.com/news/story.asp?id=15543

05:25 pm - melbourne appearances
I'm going to be doing a series of tech talks on MapReduce, google's system for doing massively parallel computation, at various Melbourne universities this week:

Monday 31st: Melbourne Uni, 5.15pm. Theatre 1, School of Computer Science (or whatever it's called now).
Tuesday 1st: Monash Clayton, 1pm. Room H5, Menzies building (11), ground floor.
Wednesday 2nd: RMIT City, 11.30am. Building 8, Level 11, Room 68.

I'm also going to be doing short lectures for unimelb first years on Monday. Wheeeeee!

And yes, I've been quiet lately. Sorry, life hasn't been full of free time. :-(

01:52 pm - my first youtube upload.
Someone at work made this cool video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPIMepZUvkQ of the 2 Cunard liners (QE2, QV) passing each other on the weekend. It needed a little something extra, so here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnlK7twDgBs

12:21 am - not that it matters...
I don't get to vote in it, but if I did, I'd be picking Obama on the Democratic side. If I was forced at gunpoint to pick amongst the Republicans, I'd just scream "shoot me now" - they are all that bad.

Of the remaining candidates, Obama's the only one who got the most important issue of the last 6 years right. The Iraq War. This utter catastrophic nightmarish fuckup is going to keep killing a lot of people for a long time to come. It's totally wrecked any chances of the US being seen as a good actor in international affairs (a role they used to be able to fill). Clinton, well, when the call came to stand up or not - she blinked. Worse yet, I'm getting a sense from her campaign that she's trying to do the run-to-the-centre thing already. Have some fucking principles.

Hilzoy has written up the case for Obama in some detail here. I'd also add damn the man knows how to speak. Regardless of his actions (and the just-linked piece seems to suggest that he's also managed to get stuff done), it'd be seriously nice to have someone in a position of authority who can actually inspire.

On the other side, the only positive is that the outright fascistic Guiliani is out. Thank fuck for that. Better yet, his campaign was an epic disaster, on the scale that will be discussed for years to come. McCain is a warmongering lunatic. Romney is a slimy say-anything car salesman, and Huckabee - woo boy. What a loony jesus freak.

Thanks to the AV team, my talk's now online on the http://linux.conf.au website. For the ease of people who don't have a .ogg viewer, I just popped the file onto google video, too. I believe that the plan is for a team at google to do this to all the videos, but what can I say, I'm impatient. :-)

12:36 am - still alive
Just finished a fairly insane week and a bit, first at Rainbow Serpent and then at linux.conf.au, where I both keynoted on Friday morning, and ran an insane lightning talk session on Friday afternoon. (Quick note for next time - 3 minutes is a tad too short for a lightning talk). Keynote was well received, will post links to video &c when they're up.

More details tomorrow, but should mention up front wooo-hooooo! to Miss S. for both having lifehacker AU get it's biggest couple of days ever, and for getting slashdotted 4 times in a single week for pieces she wrote (including the one on my talk).

Checking the news briefly for the first time in a week, I see that the new government _still_ hasn't fired Mick Keelty yet. Please, guys, just put him out to pasture.

So I just got a letter from the tax office demanding $113,000 in back taxes in the next 4 days. Fortunately, it was addressed to someone with a different middle name. Oops. Probably should ring them tomorrow.

reasons to return to Melbourne: Wicked is opening in July.

It's no Avenue Q, but hell, what is. And on the subject, Miss S (and everyone else) points to this:

Project Awesomesocks

Still no word on Avenue Q in Australia - there's been rumours of a 2008 show for ever and ever, but it's 2008 now and still not even a hint.

Andrew Olmsted, one of the few right-wingers that I could stand reading, was killed in Iraq the other day. This is the blog post he arranged to be posted in the case of his death.

Just read it.

Really. I have tears in my eyes.

11:26 pm - a belated christmas present
I just discovered that both Silver Ray and Cam Butler (the founder and guitarist from Silver Ray) have new albums out. One of the things I'm going to miss about Melbourne is the live music scene, and one of the most amazing bands I've ever seen comes from Melbourne. If you get a chance check them out. Imagine a 3 piece instrumental group that's like The Dirty Three crossed with a thunderstorm. It's the closest music gets to sex.

Days like today are when the itunes instant-gratification really comes into it's own. :-)
