Favorite story of the year (my own) - Hmmm, this one is hard. I think I am going to have to go with Hannah and Dawn and Hermione and the Big Adventure, which I wrote for Lale. It makes me so happy, because it is just about me and her and Moireach, and it's in this continuing series of universe we write, so it's like an inside joke except not really funny. I mean, this story doesn't really work as fanfic because it's getting so removed from the source, and hardly anyone is willing to keep up with this universe so I just write for my own and Lale's amusement, but I still love these stories a lot.

My best story this year - Probably Out of This Stony Rubbish. It was interesting to write 'cause it was a sequel, and when I went back to read the original I could really see that my writing's improved a LOT in the past two years. Which was kind of cool, since I wasn't really aware of that happening at the time. Also, this is a story that I put a LOT of effort into, and that has a lot of allusions, blah blah - it's more like a real story than a lot of other stuff I wrote, which were more like games. Which is totally fun and cool too, but, yeah. Runner-up in this category is All Too Sweet To Last, even though its title comes from a VANESSA CARLTON SONG as covered by my own brother. I am the loserest loser that ever lost.

Story most underappreciate by the universe - Maybe Appeals - I think my Logan characterization in that is really good, but the story didn't really have a big audience since it's not only a crossover with SVU but a crossover that totally ages down Alex Cabot with no explanation. Hahahaha. Wow, I'm awesome.

Most fun story - Looking over these it is just one big angst fest - do I WRITE fun stories? What is wrong with me? OH. Probably Five Families Connor Was Not Magically Squeezed Into After His Real Vampire Dad Slit His Throat - hahahahaha. In which the title says it all. This was totally fun - I just wish I'd had more time to write longer versions of all these crossovers, because I really enjoyed Connor as a Bluth. Runner-up in this category is Only Your Brother Knows the Places You've Been, because I still can't believe I wrote Super Mario Bros fanfic. Yikes.

Sexiest story - Ahahahahaha. Um. Okay, the priest AU! Eleison. I did not know I had a priest kink, but, um, wow. This story for some reason ate my brain - it was all I could think about for a couple of days. During finals. Which was awkward.

Hardest story to write - Out of This Stony Rubbish, again. I have actually been trying to write this sequel for the last two years, but it never worked, for some reason. I mean, I knew what would happen, what the themes were, everything. But for some reason it took reading The Waste Land every night for three weeks to find the right form. Or something. I don't even understand it. Runner-up in this category - To Carthage Then I Came. Because I started this six months before I finished it, and apparently even clone incest is disturbing enough to be hard to write. (Also, X-Files fic? Really? Is it 1997?)

Most telling story - well, if I TOLD you, then you would know! Yeah, I honestly have no idea. They're all telling - what is my problem with apocalypses? With het UST? With cartoon slash? I mean, I don't know WHAT these stories tell, but they probably tell something. But I think I try not to write my own issues too much. I don't know. Someone else can answer this one.

It could be. Either that or the one about Connor, seriously, because I think you put more of yourself into those stories. Superficially, anyway. (I mean, those stories aren't about your kinks or anything, and they aren't exploring canon -- they're about relationships between people, both of them, and they are both sort of fantasies put on paper of what life could be like if So-And-So was actually this person instead of who they are. That's what everyone thinks about all the time, right? It's like the meta of your internal life.)

(Hahaha, that was so pretentious, all I needed was a five syllable word.)

dude, if you could just get the word "reify" in there -- and it shouldn't be hard -- then you'd WIN pretentious. which i mean in a really nice way.

[info]lalejandra
2006-01-13 10:34 am UTC (link)
That's easy enough!

Kovsky's stories about interpersonal/familial relationships with no nods to her "kinks" despite their other "meta" commentaries -- cf. "All Too Sweet To Last" or what is known as "The Connor Story of DOOM" -- are stories that reify what could be considered the universal internal monologue of all people; that is, "Who would I be if I were not myself?"

....mmmmmmaybe?

The reification of the universal lament of "Who would I be were I not myself" is best seen in what has come to be known as "The Connor Story of DOOM" by Kovsky; this story employs the use of the fandom-wide conceit of "Five Things That Never Happened" (cf. "Five Ways of Becoming Someone Else" by Kyra Cullinan; "Five Things That Never Happened to Spike" by Kita; "Five Points of Difference" by Gemma Files; and the similar "Three Things That Didn't Happen to Lionel Luthor" by Jayne Levitch; etc.; a trope which shows both humanity's lament as well as humanity's well-known need to organize into boxes that which is nigh unto uncategorizable) to explore the deep psychological ramifications of "family switching"; it is as well a meta commentary on the theory of "nature versus nuture", questioning whether or not one can escape one's destiny -- and if, in fact, destiny exists outside the construct of the (very human) need to have meaning. These stories which Kovsky writes have come to be known as "The Kovsky Method"; in which the author is both present and absent and the narrator neither judges nor presents him/herself for reckoning, but rather tells the story to the reader and prompts the reader to explore for him/herself the tropes and commentaries made by the actions of the characters.

............ bwahaha.

2. All Too Sweet to Last
3. Ways to Make Someone Else Lonelier Than You
4. Attention, All Personnel
5. Vol. One of the Encyclopedia Self-Destructica

Dammit, if I have to go reread all your SVU fic again now I will NOT be pleased.

You should do this meme! And write more, wench! (Also, I did write more than you, I guess, but I am no Lale with her "I wrote 32 thousand, eight hundred and sixty three fics this year, in 37 fandoms." Heeeee.)

Oh cool! I hadn't read "Five Families Connor Was Not Magically Squeezed Into After His Real Vampire Dad Slit His Throat" yet, so this was a good reminder. I thought it was fabulous! Ah, Connor and Dawn.

And I'm not really into SVU, though I'll watch it if it comes on, and I like the characters, so I hadn't read "Eleison". I did just now, and I liked it very much too.

I have to say though, that my favorites of yours this year were "All To Sweet To Last" and "Out of this Stony Rubbish". I think you really outdid yourself with those two. You did a lot of good work this year, Kovsky. Bravo!

WOW, that's a lot of fic. I'm so impressed!

I haven't read all of them, although I'd like to - but I just have to comment on Appeals again and restate my adoration for it, because, yeah. Your Logan characterization in that is really good. That is the Logan I love, unapologetically in your face, a total jerk, but just so fucking sad at the same time.

But what I love most about the fic is that it isn't all WOE MY NY NAME IS LOGAN ECHOLLS WOE, it's FUN too; it's a fun read. (I want to make out with the scene on the bridge, seriously.) It's so rare in VM fic that a Logan fic has that kind of balance. Which is why it remains one of my fav VM fics of all time. Yes. I appear to be done now.
