[info]raheli has started a lemming encouraging users to post their full contact information, DOB, and anything else that might help them be identified into their LiveJournal. While this programme is being done with the best of intentions (so that if you're shot while making a phone post, and somebody notices, for example) it is truly a path to hell.

The US Patriot Act gives police and other law enforcement organizations excessive powers in forcing companies such as Eljay to divulge any information they have about you. By participating in this programme, you are giving up any anonymity that you may have had before. As well, Private Posts are not-encrypted, and are subject to hacking.

Always be careful about where you put your information.

In the real world, Privacy Counts.

I value my privacy and anonymity enough to avoid the LJ Abuse 'Emergency Contact' System First Post lemming.

Do you? The identity you save may be your own.

EDIT: Feel free to post this banner on your userinfos or in your journal, to let people know that's it's okay to be anonymous.

Thanks. In fairness, I just took a pro-lemming banner, and changed the text and the icon. ;)

I don't hide any of my contact info, but I do agree with this banner. I'm probably not going to post it because I'm trying to stay out of this lemming.

Reiterating comments about if you're relying on LJ to contact people, then you're in bad shape. (Empathy to anyone who really feels that alone, but it's time to get help, kids.)

I just thought that person's white-on-yellow scheme was hard to read. So being a geek, I picked a couple of hexidecimal colors. :-p

Personally, I give out my information freely because I tend to agree with Tim Leary that the only way to beat totalitarianism is with the total, unimpeded, free flow of information, and because I really *do* have nothing to hide. But in the current political climate, to encourage *others* to behave in that way is irresponsible and reckless, and can *VERY* easily lead to bullying 'so, what have you got to hide?' tactics...

Indeed. I cringe everytime I hear (or read) those "Why would I mind the gov't doing X? I'm not doing anything wrong" lines.

That encouragement to post your personal stuff is just weird.
Ostensibly, it's in case someone writes a suicide note.
Well, if someone was truly prone to being suicidal (and not merely a drama queen), then they're not going to do that, are they.

Idiocy.

My comment on this ended up here. [info]desh's response is basically consistent with what I say. Someday I will figure out a reply to "I have nothing to hide" but I have a feeling that it is like my opinion on the right to carry arms:

"There is no lawful activity that requires a semi-automatic rifle."
"Is resisting an abusive government a lawful activity?"

Thanks for the heads up. When I changed my e-mail address I did't think about the fact that it had my last name in it. Reading this made me revert to a different e-mail address. Less out of fear of the Government (although with the patriot act in hand they're plenty scary) and more to deter stalkers. I seem to attract them. Can't believe I didn't think of this before!

Late boomer here... But right on! Took me weeks to convince my flist that giving out full contact info was not a good idea. If I can figure out how to code it, I'll definitely snatch the banner!

Wow, are you reading through my entire journal?

I'd love to help you with the coding, but to be honest, I've not a clue how I managed to do it in the first place. I *think* I just viewed the page source code and copy and pasted, but I'm really not positive, sorry.

Nah, I just clicked your userinfo icon from the snope feed, and then saw the banner and clicked the link.

I'm not really the stalker type. I was thinking about looking at the source, too, or just making my own.
