On Privacy
Public Service Announcement.
raheli has started a lemming encouraging users to post their full contact information, DOB, and anything else that might help them be identified into their LiveJournal. While this programme is being done with the best of intentions (so that if you're shot while making a phone post, and somebody notices, for example) it is truly a path to hell.
The US Patriot Act gives police and other law enforcement organizations excessive powers in forcing companies such as Eljay to divulge any information they have about you. By participating in this programme, you are giving up any anonymity that you may have had before. As well, Private Posts are not-encrypted, and are subject to hacking.
Always be careful about where you put your information.
EDIT: Feel free to post this banner on your userinfos or in your journal, to let people know that's it's okay to be anonymous.

In the real world, Privacy Counts. I value my privacy and anonymity enough to avoid the LJ Abuse 'Emergency Contact' System First Post lemming. Do you? The identity you save may be your own. | |
