I'M BATMAN: Preemptive Told You So
If you'll indulge me, I'm going to veer slightly from the introspective and enlightened fare you've come to expect from Andy Khouri's livejournal and bring your attention to something we rarely discuss here: comic books.

Many of you may be familiar with this now infamous image:

This is of course the cover to DC Comics's COUNTDOWN TO INFINITE CRISIS. For some time now, fans and pundits alike have been up in arms over this image and its ominous... imagery:

The Batman, holding a seemingly unidentifiable man while Earth's greatest heroes look on in shock and awe. Who is this man the Batman carries in his arms? Is he a family member or loved one; Alfred the butler, perhaps? Is he yet another fan-favourite supporting character like Sue "Elongated Man's Wife" Dibney, murdered as part of a terrible conspiracy that will once again shake the very core of the DC Universe? The Blue Beetle, perhaps?

No.

No, this man the Batman holds so preciously is none of those things ALTHOUGH he is a hero. A fallen, forgotten hero.

I wish it to be known in all quarters of that I hereby declare the identity of the so-called "Countdown dude" to be none other than BARRY ALLEN.

OBSERVE!

Observe the reddish hue of the man's clothing. Observe the wide Silver Age Flash-style eye holes in the mask, with its torn bits dangling in the air. Observe the wing-like forms on the man's head. Observe the man's LEFT ARM -- STRIPPED of its sleeve, conveniently removing the Flash's signature lighting bolt design scheme.

And remember that Barry Allen is more than anything else the true symbol of the Crisis on Infinite Earths; that most massive event COUNTDOWN mercilessly promises to excavate.

The Blue Beetle??? My ass, NERDS.

the coloration on the mid arm would seem to be gold.

this is not a flash costume I know of.

I'm not sure I understand what you're talking about... I don't know what kind of wacked out monitor gamma you're using, but I see no gold. And the sleeve is removed anyway, it's just skin. The lack of sleeve clinches it, it's totally The Flash.

But if you insist, Professor Zoom has a yellow costume. Not gold but close.

I think I proved your point for you.

Ok I made this graphic to disprove you but the more I look at the Alex Ross painted Flash at the bottom the more I tend to agree and the placement of the metallic bit is just...off.

I am swayed to "maybe" on Allen.

I see no hue to the clothing. The whole thing looks slate grey to me, like Batman's.

Even if you look at it in grayscale, the other clues remain. Even if you discount the head stuff as inconclusive, the lack of sleeve is too telling.

Did I miss the entry in Whos Who that says only the Flash can lose his sleeve in combat?

When the whole thing is this big WHO IS IT and it's a CRISIS thing and they're going out of their way to obscure all telling parts of the costume, particularly the ARM where the Flash happens to have a very distinctive design, it points to Barry Allen and you know it!

Also... you referenced Who's Who. Ew.

Blue Beetle has a very distinctive sleeve design too.

You've convinced me, it's Blue Beetle.

Bah! It's Barbara Gordon, after her hair's been shaved off and her breasts smashed down. (Or obscured by Batman's arm.) And, of course, raped by the Joker Doctor Light.

I would pay $50... possibly more... if it's revealed that before he died, Barry Allen was also raped by Doctor Light.

Hell, if they did that, I'd promise to buy every single book from DC Comics for the next six months. I'll put my money where my mouth is. C'mon, DC! Don't chicken out!

It's either the Barry Allen Flash or it's Julius Schwartz. I'm not sure which.

It's some big secret thing they've been weaving in and out of various DCU books for a while. It's like a nonreboot reboot. Or something. I dunno. I'm on Fanboy Rampage. Fuck.

I'm more concerned with who decided Alex Ross painting over Jim Lee pencils was a good idea. As Matt Craig described it - "a hideous Brundlefly of a cover"

...you know, I thought it was Beetle because I was mistaking the flanges on Batman's gloves for the beetle-legs on Ted's costume. But I'm beginning to think you're right. I'm also beginning to think maybe I need to get out more.

I think your guess may be closer to the mark when INFINITE CRISIS itself hits in a few weeks. (I may have touched on this already on The V.)
