Trials of a webmaster

Finding myself in the middle of a battle for popularity in a local community group, I've turned my attention to our website, which I now run. Having completely overhauled the main information pages, I've also added a message forum, full of relevant information, and also added a calendar. And the problems begin.

Being rather proud of myself for installing it all ok, and adding all of our forthcoming events, I turned my attention to the email side. A few changes in the code, and it was all pointing the right way and sending out test emails perfectly. However, could I get the event reminders to send? Not at all.

Turns out I need to set up a cronjob, which isn't allowed by my host. Gritted teeth, I called the 50p/min support line, who suggested I email their tech guys. That was £4 well spent! Guess we'll have to wait and see what they come back with.

For now, I'll just have to point my browser at the script every so often, and make it run manually. I do not intend this to be the long-term fix.

Ah well, a problem-free day would just be plain dull......

4 years on....

The comment from my course leader today kicked me in to action. I should keep a record of things that I do. The next year is going to be a roller-coaster of emotions and feelings, but that's good becuase apparently only 10% of the class will be depressed at any one time, so it should be easier to find someone in the 90%. So I've been told today.

Anyway, the theory goes something along the lines of keeping a record here will help me to see that the really low times are just a passing phase.

Today saw the first day of my PGCE Secondary Mathematics teacher training course. I posted about this as a potential career for me in July 2003. So it's taken a while, but I've finally made the jump. I've spent the last 6 months completing a maths enhancement course, so subject knowledge is OK, and I spent a week in a primary school last week, so at least I know that kiddies don't bring me out in a rash :)

Today was really just an intro day. Believe it or not, but we have been told that we will need to work hard, you can't hit children any more, and getting drunk and sleeping with them is a bad idea too. I assume the learning curve may increase at some point.......

Well, after all that work I get a day off. Education resumes at 1pm on Wednesday. Then I get to find out which school I'm getting placed in for my training. I'll try to post more.

Hello to all....

Surely this is just taking it too far?

Now, here's one quiz I didn't ever imagine finding.

Tetrachloroethane
Tetrachloroethane:
You are the first chlorine-containing solvent produced in high quantities before World War I. Your primary uses before WWII included industrial cleaner and solvent thinner. You do not attach to soil particles, and break down slowly in air or water.
Find out what kind of industrial solvent you are

Damn, these quizzes are really addictive!

So where did I meet my LJ friends?

(I'm just glad there's not too many!)

archiemanarchieman Met at a spod meet, organised by me, in the Dungeon, Aberdeen Uni Union, about Sept-Nov 1995
grahambgrahamb Possibly at school, but definitely during summer of 1995, at a pub in Ellon, Aberdeenshire
solitassolitas In a random pub in Aberdeen, during a mini-spodmeet in May 2003
soruksoruk Despite never actually having made a conversation with him, I do recall spodding in the same room at Aberdeen Uni, around late 1995, with Soruk.

Oh, I've done my CV today, after calming down from the frenetic burst of energy that was my 4 mile cycle ride. The CV looks proper mint, if only I could get a section of grey shading off the page :+)

And I've found a peice of music that's been bugging me all day..see Current Music for info....

Time for a change?

Listening to the radio in bed today, there was a news article about the shortage of Maths teachers in Secondary schools, and the financial incentives available to them (£6,000 during the PGCE, with a £4,000 "Golden Hello" at some point after qualifying) which got me thinking (not for the first time) about a career in teaching. With my degree under my belt (with a fair proportion of mathematics) I should stand a fair chance of getting on to a course in September.

Here's the link to the Teacher Training Site.

I went out and bought a GCSE Maths book, to see if I was still up to it, and got a bit stuck last time, but I am now in posession of all my old Higher grade Maths notes from school, so I think I might give it another go to see if I can still remember it. Oh, and I tried the online Maths Challenge (acessible from the above link) and only got 25% !!!

Still, I hear that the starting salary for a NQT (Newly Qualified Teacher) is around £17,700, and I can't think of any other way to (legally) get to that sort of money in 2 years, so it's worth a thought.

I think I'll go out for a cycle ride this evening, and see if that doesn't get me thinking.....

morally deficient
Threat rating: Medium. Your total lack of decent
family values makes you dangerous, but we can
count on some right wing nutter blowing you up
if you become too high profile.
