[info]soygringation, posting in [info]austincommunity
Does anyone know how to find out why a SWAT Team was called out to a scene?  One was in my hood today....and I was wondering what else could be going on besides our mailboxes being broken into....

TIA for any direction on this.

2-for-1 Dinner Specials Oct. 15th, 2008 @ 02:02 pm

With the economy the way it is, could someone direct me to places that have good 2-for-1 dinner specials.

Or other places that have specials that could help a poor girl out.

AT&T U-Verse: Who has it? What are your impressions? Oct. 15th, 2008 @ 01:24 pm
[info]graphicnovelist, posting in [info]austincommunity
Time-Warner has annoyed me for the last time. I've just discovered that U-Verse is now available in my area (sadly, Grande does not seem to be), and frankly it's looking mighty tempting.

Who on this community has any experience with it and, more importantly, how have you liked it in terms of quality and service for the price?

Orthodontist Oct. 15th, 2008 @ 01:06 pm
[info]palmtreefreak, posting in [info]austincommunity
I'm looking for an orthodontist to take my braces off and fit me for a retainer.  I moved here recently, and I'm not going to be able to fly back as often as I had originally planned to get treatment from my original orthodontist.  My teeth are as straight as I wanted, anyway.  Anyone else had this experience?

Where to get Lobster...? Oct. 15th, 2008 @ 01:06 pm
[info]scotchfx, posting in [info]austincommunity
I've got a birthday dinner to plan and need to find out the best place in Austin for lobster... keeping in mind also that the person I am planning for just got back from Mexico last month where she apparently was able to order gargantuan langostas and a number of different restaurants...

Granted Austin is landlocked so we are somewhat of a disadvantage... but I digress

Any suggestions?

2 questions, totally unrelated to eachother Oct. 15th, 2008 @ 12:21 pm
[info]texasoddity, posting in [info]austincommunity
1.  Say a person's car gets a flat tire and the person loses control JUST A LITTLE and ends up partway on a guardrail on the side of the road.  The person can't get the car to move, so he walks away to look for a mechanic/towing service.  When he returns, the car is just plain gone.  What should he do to find out where his car went?  Will police have a car towed without warning?   Is it more likely some random tow truck guy just came up and towed the car?  We're hoping the car wasn't stolen...  I told my coworker to tell his friend to call 311.  Is there a better way to find out where the car went?

And

2.  How does one find out about interesting new restaurants in Austin?  Anyone here have recommendations?

Heads? Oct. 15th, 2008 @ 11:04 am

Can you tell me where to get some heads?

Fun Fun Fun Fest Oct. 15th, 2008 @ 10:34 am
[info]faux_chateaux, posting in [info]austincommunity
Where, besides the internet, can I buy Fun Fun Fun tickets? The student discount isn't my first priority, but if they honour it, I'll take it.

Also, is anyone else having trouble buying their tickets online? Every time I click "purchase" and await gratification, it takes me to the previous confirmation page telling me there is a problem with the information I entered (there isn't). This has happened for, like, 3 days now.

Ben & Jerry's Oct. 15th, 2008 @ 09:12 am
[info]candyce, posting in [info]austincommunity
I LOVE Ben & Jerry's Creme Brulee ice cream... but of course they don't sell it in stores, just in their shops. The one by me, at Mopac and Burnet, closed a while back, but last night we were at IKEA and I thought I'd stop by the Round Rock one on the way home... and it's closed now too! Only Westlake and downtown-south have locations now :-( I am a sad panda... what the hell is going on? Are they going under, or does North Austin just not understand the awesomeness that is Ben & Jerry's? Anyone have the "scoop"? (Ha ha! Sorry, couldn't help myself.)

Migas Oct. 15th, 2008 @ 01:15 am
[info]telly_says, posting in [info]austincommunity
Is migas just an Austin thing (as far as TX is concerned)? I've never heard of them before I moved here- at least until about 1993.

Wikipedia describes it as a Texas thing (w/ Spanish/Portuguese origins) but I've only seen it in Austin.

I need to get landlord's insurance, any recommendation for local agents? Independents highly preferred, and I'm definitely not going with State Farm again.

Psychiatrists Oct. 14th, 2008 @ 05:11 pm
[info]ladycherub16, posting in [info]austincommunity
I need some assistance finding a decent and inexpensive Psychiatrist in town.  I do not have insurance, and I have a very limited income.  I need a worthy doctor who will actually help me on the first visit and not charge me a ridiculous fee, as opposed to all the other doctors I have seen who have just been a waste of time and money.  (You know, how they like to prescribe medicines that don't work, then when I see them for the tenth time and declare the meds are not working, they refuse to help any further.)

Any suggestions?

I would prefer someone in the North Austin/Round Rock area, but I am willing to travel.

Vests, local thrift stores-- Oct. 14th, 2008 @ 03:01 pm
[info]spottylogic, posting in [info]austincommunity
Someone with an eye to the local big box thrift stores, explain this one to me.

I'm needing a man's vest for a halloween costume. Something nice and 70's-tasticly tacky.

Problem is, NO thrift store has vests anymore. I've found a few at "Cream" on campus, but that's it.

I really don't understand this one - Savers used to have like two feet of vests at both locations, and every Goodwill had a dozen or so vests just lying around, usually in a well-defined section near Men's Coats. Now, there's maybe one, *maybe*, and nothing at Savers at all. Very peculiar!

Has someone cornered the market on vests? Was there a blight in the vest crop last year, and now the thrift stores are feeling it? Did they cancel the "Vests, a Sensible Gift for Dad" campaign?

Bizaare...
