I was looking at the "one-page" (one-sheet, ahem) Esperanto summary on your web page and was pretty impresed by the internal logic of the language. This was partially motivated by pondering the stupidities of English like its irregular verbs. Does Esperanto have any irregular verbs?

Languages without accented letters seem to be preferable to languages with accented letters to my set of tastes and prejudices, largely because (e.g.) é to produce an é seems like a lot to type for one character. Come the revolution I suppose there will be Esperanto keyboards with accented characters on; maybe you know of some program to remap the function keys to accented characters already.

Yep, Esperanto has no irregular verbs.

Ek! seems to be a good program, but I just can't seem to get it to work on my computer. :-( A lot of people just write an h or x after what would be an accented character, so instead of ruĝa, you could type rugha or rugxa. The x's are used more on the Internet since the letter x doesn't exist in the Esperanto alphabet. People do something similar in German... they type ae for ä and oe for ö if they're at a keyboard where they can't type those letters.

In place of the summary I wrote and deleted, here's a better description of the origin of the umlaut. The use of an appended e in place of an vowel with an umlaut has a longer history than keyboards and poor multi-lingual support.

Keyboard layouts can generally be found, or created, to match what one wants. On Macs, this is often unnecessary, courtesy of the convenient option-digraphs. Typing option+(one of several different keys), and following this with an acceptable second character typed regularly, will result in an accented character. To see what's acceptable and the like, use Keycaps. Alternately, for making web-friendly accented characters quickly, without all that typing, one could make a script to recognise specific unusual character combinations one has designated for the accented characters one wants inserted, and then replace them with the appropriate ampersand+whatever+semicolon.

For representing languages with accented characters online, a typical approach is just to not use the accents, leaving it to context and the reader's familiarity with the language to understand it as if it were accented. I know this is the case in French, and can see it easily being adapted to the other Romance languages (barring Ro/umanian written in Cyrillic, but then, you've got a whole other barrel of problems with trying to do that). In languages where this would cause a serious conflict of words that are difficult to distinguish by context, other solutions like Esperanto's may perhaps be used, but that, I do not know.

John Hoyne wrote an add on for word where it automatically converts to accented letters if it is followed by an x (you type cx and it comes out ĉ) and is on a toggle on/off switch. I think this is his here, but it might be a similar idea :-) anyway, it works really well.

Once I said the Croatian word for "squeak!" in a chatroom, omitting the accent.....Thus changing the meaning of the sentance to a command to suck my nipples. Since then I'm very leery of forgetting accents! I'll even do something uns^ightly [like that!] if I have to.

Saluton!
