Anime rec: Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo [Sep. 29th, 2008|07:24 pm]
[Tags|]
[Current Mood | happy sigh]

Image from the wikipedia page.

On [info]ravenna_c_tan's recommendation, I watched the 24-episode anime series Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, which is a futuristic version of the classic Dumas story. I loved it. At first I wasn't sure if I was going to make it past the animation style, which uses fixed background patterns for clothing and hair which shift as the characters move; I didn't care for that way back when I first saw it used for a plaid-clad guy in a Bugs Bunny cartoon. But I got used to it, and then it really grew on me. Makes me want to run down to the fabric store and find the loudest paisley I can so that I can do cosplay for it.

The conceit of Gankutsuou is to make the children's generation the main characters, and to focus on the friendship between Monte Cristo and Mercedes's son. It's a lovely, rewardingly angsty retelling. I've seen lots of versions of TCoMC--hell, I even remember the Mr. Magoo version--and so many of them try to change the ending, but I've never seen one that Purposely vague but lightly spoilery discussion below the cut )

And there are lots of pretty men scattered all through it, and it's infinitely slashy. I'm tempted to nominate this fandom in Yuletide. Still not sure if I'm ready for that commitment, though. But I really would like to find fic of at least one particular pairing. *goes hunting doujinshi*

Television show search [Sep. 23rd, 2008|02:10 pm]

[Current Mood | useless, argh]
[Current Music |gankutsuou ep 6]

I'm having no luck with Google or IMDB, so I'm turning to my flist.

Sometime in (I think) the early 80s there was a "Twilight Zone" type of television show (the scary short vignettes sort of thing) that featured this episode: Historical piece, takes place in France, young rogue (probably a thief, I forget) is condemned to death by guillotine. His girlfriend plots to set him free. Tradition says that if the executioner dies, the next man who was to die will be set free instead. The girl sleeps with the official who can tell her what day her lover's scheduled to die, then, armed with that knowledge, sets out to seduce the executioner. The executioner (naturally a lonely pariah) grows exquisite roses; she catches his eye by pretending to be a rose-seller, displaying roses that she has secretly dyed a brilliant color. She pretends to befriend him, has dinner with him at his home, sleeps with him and in the morning (the morning of the execution) poisons his breakfast porridge. (There's a bit where the executioner's housekeeper serves fruit for dessert the night before and the girl says something like, "Thank goodness! When I saw the cake batter I thought we were going to have one of those too-rich desserts." The housekeeper coldly says it wasn't cake batter, it's porridge for monsieur's breakfast tomorrow.) Her lover is jaunty on the scaffold in the town square that morning, knowing the plot. The executioner proves to be of exceptional constitution and actually makes it out of his home and to the square, but collapses. When the condemned man demands to be set free as tradition dictates, the collapsed executioner sees the girl standing over him, who squeaks "Die!" at him under her breath. He understands the whole plot at that moment and with his last strength gets to his feet and to the scaffold, as the condemned man is forced into the guillotine, panicking and screaming (girl also panicking and screaming). The executioner gets as far as raising the guillotine blade, then collapses next to the scaffold. A doctor picks up the executioner's hand to check a pulse, pronounces him dead. "I win! I win!" screams the condemned man from the guillotine. The doctor drops the executioner's hand--which falls, dead weight, upon the release bar for the blade. Shot of the blade just beginning to fall, cut to black.

What the hell was the name of this show/episode?

ETA: Found! Through the grace of [info]bethbethbeth and a little internet persistence on both our parts, it's "Guillotine," an episode of the '81-'82 series Darkroom, hosted by James Coburn. Not on DVD, it appears. Well, I have a place to start looking, at least!

I vote based on two issues: abortion rights and gay marriage. (No candidate is ever anti-economy. That's not even in the equation for me.) I wouldn't call my mood happy, exactly--I wish no one in America was against these two issues--but it relieves me in that I still do not have to be at all indecisive in how to cast my vote.

And that's really all we have control over, isn't it.

I'm deeply happy that I had the honor of participating in [info]merry_smutmas for every one of its years. But it's retired, and so is my participation in exchange fests.

Exchange fests, I learned, aren't really a good format for me: they put an obligation on my shoulders and a list in my lap but they do not provide plotbunnies.

I write by plotbunnies. "I like Harry/Draco" is not a plotbunny. Yeah, I love 'em too, kiddo; got anything else?

The format of the [info]pornish_pixies Fantasy Fests suits me better. Everyone submits plotbunnies, replete with pairings and kinks and most importantly, scenarios, and you look at that list of two hundred storylines ("Harry finds his mum's wedding gown in a trunk and decides to use it to seduce Snape") and you pick and choose the ones that make you say Oh, hell, yes.

Because when I see, "Harry/Remus, Pansy/Hermione, Dumbledore/Grindlewald, Snape/Right Hand; teasing, deep kissing, bondage, double penetration"...I see a list. I don't see a story.

Terminus fun. (Cut-tags are for wusses.) [Aug. 12th, 2008|07:17 pm]

[Current Mood | satisfied]
[Current Music |Takarazuka Flower Troupe Elisabeth]

Home from Terminus. For those of you who don't attend HP cons or SF/fantasy/fandom/etc. conventions in general, when you first go to cons you attend all the programming, and after a few years you go to almost none of the programming and instead you go there in order to hang with your friends and plan your own gathering times. This is my fifth HP convention and, yep, I'm at that point.

There are a few people whose sides I do not physically want to leave--my, "What are you doing next? Yeah, I'll do that too," friends. I'm pretty sure they know who they are. I hope so, anyway. When I start to marvel at the coincidence that these ladies are also the fanauthors I most adore, I remind myself that it probably isn't coincidence, because that's what put me on their track in the first place, sent me running to them in fangirlish glee-squee. But it is fantastic and amazing and probably my share of universe-karma all used up that, yes, they turned out to be just-as-incredible people in person and accepted my worship and seem to like me back just as much. I didn't have them all there this time, but as you can imagine, it makes the time one spends with those who are there all the more precious.

And then there are the people you didn't know as well online but get to know better at the conventions and discover they're fantastic too, and you get clingy to them and start planning meet-ups that don't even involve a convention. Sigh. Fandom is awesome.

Hghlights included:

-Discovering that I have been a fan of [info]ravenna_c_tan's original fiction for the better part of two decades. I didn't know!

-The official-looking sign posted on the mirror in the Quimby's bookstore bathroom that reads something like, "Jesus CHRIST, when you're done, please put the toilet lid down and clean up after yourself. Are you actual animals or WHAT." Something like. Funnier, actually.

-I never get to spend as much time as I like with [info]dementordelta, [info]bethbethbeth, and [info]femmequixotic. They radiate such cool and confidence and and sheer welcoming openness, it leaves me stammering. When [info]bethbethbeth ran into me at the dance, I had such a rush of affection I could not help but drape myself over her in a naughty worshipful display of boogie fever. Which she joined in, most graciously. Beth, you class act, mwah.

-[info]dementordelta's glorious, glorious Snarry trousers. Snarry art heat-transfers all over 'em.

-[info]mijan was dressed in black tie for the dance--cufflinks, fringed white scarf, the works--and radiated elegance. The two of us had a bit of a dance; I blushed just to be under her attention, she had such grace. &hearts

- [info]nimori's creation, The Ultimate Mary Sue Board Game. Collect the affections of six major HP characters and try not to lose them to catfights! There was a board decorated with squid, Deus Ex Machina cards, fairy-winged princess tokens...Which one was my token again--Jasmina Malfoy? Something like that.[info]ziasudra_fic won. *awards her the sparkly tiara*

-Saturday night's dinner actually got everyone fed and happy with yummy steak despite the wait for a table and the closure of the subway line we were supposed to take, thank you, Chicago CTA. A few of us walked back and it was a freakin' gorgeous night. That Michigan-and-Wacker-Drive view at night can't be beat as far as city views go IMHO.

-I think [info]acromantular knows I girlcrushed her a little. I ran into her a whole bunch and she's lovely to begin with and she glams up gorgeous. *waves, ducks and giggles behind hand*

-The number of people who showed up for my "what's Slytherin?" presentation. Awww! I didn't have nearly enough handouts, 'cos I hadn't expected all that many people. And everyone was attentive and pretended they were interested. :D

-Reminiscing about TV shows with [info]lauriegilbert in the pool and discovering we were both huge Studio 60 On the Sunset Strip fans, right down to the "Nevada Day" quotes.

-Anti-highlight: Where did that "McCain picked Rice as his running mate" rumor come from? I didn't realize it was false until this morning.

-Another anti-highlight: the elevators in the hotel had little TVs playing CNN, and [info]dbassassin observed, "Every time I get in the elevators someone else dies." So they were the Death Elevators from that point. Bye, Bernie 'n' Isaac.

-At one point I heard this utterly gorgeous music from the lobby piano. Turned out to be a Wizard Wrock duo called RiddleTM, performing a lovely wrenching Harry-lamenting-Sirius number. They have a MySpace page and an album and streaming audio and all, and the music featured on the page is quite nice, but the experience of the solo acoustic piano that I heard pounding out there in the lobby can't be matched by mere electronic arrangement. I guess that will have to remain a wistful memory. *goes to their myspace page and replays Beyond the Veil a few times anyway*

- Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha we got a handful of the uninitiated to watch the first two eps of Death Note. It was like a birthday present for me. Fifteen or so of us piled on and around the lounge sofa, watching on the laptop, the ones who had seen it watching the reactions of the ones who hadn't. And everyone was fixed. [info]titti came by looking for us and at first thought everyone had left because the area had become so quiet! Ah ha ha ha. [info]femmequixotic, thank you thank you for being open to the suggestion, 'cos it was your "Sure, show it to me" that made it all happen. Smooooch.

(There was also the disagreement with [info]reddwarfer as to why she wouldn't let me take her new Light Yagami/Ryuk wallscroll back to the hotel and take a nap with it. It would just have been SLEEP. It wouldn't really have been infidelity, honest.)

-Showed a few people my other other obsession, the musical Elisabeth (You come for the slash, you stay for the music. And the Takarazuka troupe too). They liked! I should have some mp3s to share soon, for those of you who are keen. ^_^

Terminus in a couple of days, yay! I was actually just in Chicago a couple of weeks ago, so my list of non-fan things I want to accomplish is short. And everything involves food and everything's within walking distance.

-Weber Grill. This was a great casual restaurant, with terrific steaks and burgers, a menu with a lot of variety, and one of the best chocolate malts I've ever had. And not too expensive! Reasonable prices and great steak don't always show up together. I'm not making any big group dinner plans because there are enough planned events as it is, but I'll be hitting this place for dinner at least once, if anyone would like to join me.

-Vosges Chocolates. My favorite of their bars all involve salt. I think I've eaten everything I brought home. Must get more truffles. Mmmmmm.

-Chicago-style pizza. This might be good for carry-out. I love Uno's but I can get Uno's where I live, so, more likely it'll be Gino's East or Giordano's. Or whatever else pops up within walking distance and sounds yummy.

-Argo Tea. Like Starbucks for tea. Creamy sweet tea drinks, both cold and hot.

-Wow Bao. Chinese steamed buns and other goodies. Great for portable food. Their homemade pomegranate ginger ale is fantastic.

[Current Music |antique bakery]

Saw the trailer proper; yes, it looks pretty (Dumbledore's head not withstanding). I'm expecting to like the film; I see many opportunities for these final three films to repair the weaknesses in the final two books.

I would like to make a clever analogy that explains why HBP disappoints me, like, perhaps, "HBP is The Magician's Nephew of the series." Except it's not true. I liked The Magician's Nephew quite a bit, even if it introduces us to characters we don't know--or that we think we don't know, until later--because it's an active tale, not an expository one. It doesn't give me the sense of "You couldn't have explained this in two pages? You couldn't have explained this in two pages four books ago?" that HBP does. Pensieve exposition is still exposition.

The trailer really brings home how little--how little of importance, anyway--Harry has to do in this book.

I feel I will be left out if I don't say something about Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog, since everyone else has. I thought it was delightful and that Joss Whedon will be sinning against the universe if he doesn't write an honest-to-god full length musical of some kind some day. I still think the Buffy musical is one of the best musical scores written in decades (and I'd never seen any Buffy at all before I saw that episode). Dr. Horrible's score did its darned best to be a worthy follow-up. I need to get my hands on the audio and play it bunches.

I discovered that numerous posts on my flist said they liked part III less than they liked the first two parts, and at first I agreed. But when I read their reasons why, I was surprised, because it seems the reason for most is that they didn't like a particular plot element. Me, I loved the plot--what bothered me is that it seemed incomplete. At fade-to-black, I was left saying, "Wait--and THEN?" Feels to me like the character's emotional journey is waiting to be completed. Anyone else love the plot but feel the ending came too abruptly?

Honestly? You want to engage me and make me believe you've ramped up the story? Stop effing shoving "ultimate," "supreme," and "maximum" into every other sentence. Oh, and "destiny." SURPRISE ME. ENGAGE ME. STOP TELLING ME HOW MUCH I SHOULD BE ENGAGED.

*looks at all the squee on flist* I guess I'm the only one who thought it was 45 minutes of "hey Mom, watch me watch me watch me watch me" tell-not-show, huh.

Re: Potential pool closure at the Hilton Chicago during Terminus:

I spoke with a very nice person at the Hilton's Health Club who said that in the past day or two, it appears that the time of renovation may be delayed until September. This is not final or official but it is appearing more likely (this is because of unspecific changes encountered in the last day or two). In any case, she reassured me that the hotel next door (or it may have been across the street, but it any case it is right there by the hotel) will accommodate guests at their pool during the time of renovation.

You know what I discovered this morning?

This icon that I made for Team Dragon for Snarry Games:

...I had no idea that the character I was quoting (from Rocky Number...Whatever*) was named Drago. I love inadvertent serendipity. ^_^

(*Yes, I know it's Rocky IV, but who cares.)

[Current Music |oh, great, the kid from the omen's being born next door]

I've watched the first episode of Death Note with the English dub, to see if the dub was enjoyable, 'cos I love this series so much I'd like to experience it every way available. I think it's well done, but I'm not so happy with Ryuk's voice. Not that the actor isn't good, it just makes Ryuk a different guy. Japanese-voice Ryuk sounds like the kind of lazy good-for-nothing friend of yours that lies on your sofa eating your Cheetos and watching your cable, but you let him hang around because he's fun to play Gran Turismo with and he never asks you when you're gonna clean the place up. English-voice Ryuk, on the other hand, is not a friend but he's this guy a friend of a friend of yours knows, and you never ever hang out with him because they say he has mob ties and drives around with three shotguns and a drum of kerosene in his car trunk, and you only call him if you have to get rid of a body, and he says, "I'll meet you at ninth and Gateridge; bring fifty feet of garden hose and $8000," and while you're still saying, "Where the f**k am I gonna get $8000 and garden hose at this time of night?" he's already hung up on you and is heading over.

So, um, yeah. Different.

[Current Music |on to 19!]

Just finished episode 18 of Death Note. Okay, every time this show has started to go in a a direction that made me say, "Oh, no--no, don't go there--don't let this be--" it one-eighties by the end of the episode and I'm all "Oh, JOY, thank you." And here I am at this point, and I'm trying to remember that the series hasn't failed me yet. It'll all one-eighty again...soon, right? She'll hold together. Hear me, baby? Hold together!

*hopes*

[Current Music |not episode 8, not yet. want to absorb and FEEL.]

Fired, every last one of you, FIRED, for not telling me to sit down and watch the sublimity that is Death Note. You made me wait until I stumbled across the premise for myself. You all suck. This show is full of so much clever my brain cannot process. Eeeeeeee. I just watched episode 7--the one that takes place almost entirely on the street and is kind of real-timey, a la 24?--and I'm frozen from going on, frozen, because it was so freaking perfect I almost want the series to end right there. You people with your Supernatural and your Stargate Atlantis--bah, I tell you, bah! *writes down entire flist's names on Death Note*

I did somehow make time in the middle of mainlining Death Note to watch the latest Doctor Who, "Midnight." Exactly the kind of story that deserves to be a one-shot, yay for spot-on pacing. I was very happy that my first suspicions of "Wait...don't tell me it will all turn out to be--" were unfounded, and yes, images of the Doctor's face during that scene will be etched on my retinas whilst in the throes of sexual joy in the future. As if you doubted.

[Current Music |or maybe Bigmouth Strikes Again?]

Eee, I love this meme. Ganked from [info]jenna_thorn and [info]cluegirl.

You are in a mall when the zombies attack. You have:
1. one weapon.
2. one song blasting on the speakers.
3. one famous person to fight alongside you.

Weapon can be real or fictional, you may assume endless ammo if applicable. Person can be real or fictional.

1. I don't know guns, but I want one of those that you have to hold with both hands at the level of your hips and pump between shots because the shells are so freaking powerful that they blow whatever's hit by them into the next room.

2. Black Sabbath, "Iron Man." Unless I were going for Tarantino-esque irony, in which case I'd take some Morrissey, probably "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful." (Though "You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side" would be genuinely awesome zombie-killing music.)

3. John McClane.

I love all the music choices people have been selecting for this--Ballroom Blitz, O Fortuna... I think we should make a playlist. "Music to Kill Zombies By." We could have it ready by June 13th, this year's
