last night [25 Jul 2008|12:19pm]
i drunk dialed my boyfriend from a PAY PHONE.  eight dollars in change and less than a minute of talking later...

[18 Jul 2008|11:46am]

stuff i’ve been doing:

  • marching in gay pride parades
  • coping with not having a cell phone
  • shucking corn, making ice cream and solving puzzles with family in nebraska
  • catching my first fish (a catfish at that!)
  • wishing i had met glen fentiman
  • having nervous breakdowns and locking myself in a room for days
  • long movie marathons with the best caretaker in the world
  • eating brussel sprouts
  • getting promoted to executive
  • waiting to celebrate robin’s birthday
  • waiting to be merry in bodega bay
emotions have been up and down and sideways and i fear it may be beating me, the mixture of planning and fun and anxiety. so i’m swearing off the hard stuff. no more planning if i can help it. which also means please don’t ask me for one. consider me a recovering plan-aholic.

but i’m happy all the while, submerging myself in the inherent and effortless. those are the things that require the least and mean the most.

... .so onward i go.. .

today is the WORST.  i just want to sleep and forget all about it.  and then tomorrow i want to wake up and forget about it.  and then i just want it all to go away on its own but not before magically fixing everything that today has brought.

LA [25 Jun 2008|11:15am]
things i learned from this weekend's trip to los angeles:
  • never underestimate the value of books and comedians on tape
  • always be prepared for valet - ALWAYS
  • never start the evening with a gin and tonic in a place that has a mechanical bull
  • keep your distance from that guy who is so far beyond inappropriate he makes you laugh til you cry
  • make friends with good hosts
  • never let billy shower last despite his claims to be the fastest
  • get the bottomless mimosas – you may not understand the math to calculate its value but you will understand three sheets to the wind
  • buy the reclinable beach chair – your tan and nap will thank you
  • mexican fruit vendors know how to handle las frutas
  • steer clear from the shuttlecock when monica is playing with it
  • watching my boyfriend play in the ocean is like watching a very large child
  • food network is a pretty safe bet for crowd pleasing
  • more restaurants should have 150 brews served in yard-long glasses
  • ROSCOE’S ROSCOE'S ROSCOE'S!  chicken and waffles for breakfast are genius!  snoop was right!  LONG BEACH ROSCOE’S 4 LIFE!
  • it really is a small world
  • justin is my favorite roadtrip partner because he lets me control the radio remote
in other news, my phone is broken and it's been pretty boring.  especially now that i have so much to say to people!

update [06 Jun 2008|01:56am]
i think i'm long overdue for a journal entry and now - at this hour - seems as good a time as any.

so the theme for these months is MAJOR. everything MAJOR. everything bigger and better and richer and poorer MAJOR.

the following issues come to mind:

1. work
2. people leaving san francisco
3. people visiting san francisco
4. vacation
5. time, in general

i: at work, i've been recruited to a cool kids club. i submit things i think are cool, i connect with my cool friends, i keep a video diary of hot and not (i get to keep the camera). but "being cool" is a lot harder than it seems. there's a lot of pressure to deliver an a-ha nugget that provides some insight to understanding our generation of neon and those skinny headbands i pretend to despise. i'm trying to be as honest and true to myself as possible. but i'm finding that difficult when i'm being asked to deliver tangible files on the cool. now i have a week to record my going-ons and i feel compelled to go out and booze it up when all i really want to do is lay in bed with my boyfriend in a beat-up t-shirt and watch roseanne re-runs all day. how's that for content? and who the hell picked me anyway. joke's on them.

i made a powerpoint presentation the other day. on myself. it was tongue-in-check fodder for my team while they discussed my possible promotion. then the big man on campus got wind of it and asked me to PRINT IT OUT for the other powers-that-be at the agency. it was mortifying really. imagine standing there with a powerpoint presentation peppered with pictures of yourself with credits such as setting up the conference call system at the agency and being funny sometimes. it's like when someone asks you to repeat yourself when you've just delivered the punchline. it felt like that ten times over.

so there's also been a lot of whispers around the office. we're getting crowded and fingers are being pointed and feelings are being hurt. the four girls, myself included, formerly known as The Quad will disband in the upcoming weeks and i may be forced to sit next to MY BOSS. now there's a way to ruin my spirit. tomorrow we're throwing a quad party with micheladas. just because we need it. then we're drinking beer out of boots. because that's the agency way.

ii: michella and kevin have officially left san francisco. i cried. and that was just with the slightest bit of acknowledgment on my part as i haven't fully taken in the fact that two of our most beloved friends of all time are now thousands of miles away. kate and eric are leaving in august. leticia maybe next year. justin and i at some point. lucky for us, we're not on any agenda, don't have any force moving us one way or the other, so long as we're still having fun and there are still lucas/ad agency parties to attend.

iii. we've had our share of visitors and they keep on coming. last weekend justin's parents visited which felt very much like my own parents visiting. they called us "their kids." we were especially proud of the "plan" (not to be confused with a schedule) and think they had an exceptional time, which included:

authentic dim sum breakfast
farmer's market
giants baseball game
tour of my house
top of the mark restaurant
TONGA ROOM ftw!
hike in the marin mountains
champagne coves in sonoma
tour of justin's house
view from treasure island
thai dinner
twin peaks view of the city

i was sad to see them go. parents are good for the soul. especially when they hug you and tell you they love you and they aren't even your parents.

many more visitors to come this month. but i'm most excited about visiting monica in LOS ANGELES in a few weekends. it was just about the only way i could convince justin to take a mini-holiday in june.

iv: besides our upcoming LA adventure, we're headed to nebraska for fourth of july and planning a russian river adventure for robs' birthday. i'd like to try for another camping weekend too. and then melissa's visit which marks another fun LAlaladies trip. i'm pushing it but will make room for a summer/fall austin getaway before tubing is put on layaway.

v. there's not enough time. i get home at 9pm, make dinner, wrap up some "life chores" as we call them at the agency and can't bring myself to sleep without having felt a semblance of an actual LIFE. so i stay up til two in the morning blogging about how much of a life i wish i had. makes perfect sense.

/end blog.

oh, p.s., i make a killer banana pudding these days. the key is in the mini wafer.

MAY MAY MAY MAY [24 May 2008|02:33am]
as a sidenote, i've grown a fondness for doubles and quadruples.

on my double-life:

AUSTIN
i was in austin last weekend to watch my little sister graduate COLLEGE. i stayed in her awe-inspiring one bedroom, peppered with things i once owned and things she's acquired over her years of young adulthood. it really aged me but also got me excited about the prospects of a bigger place. please, god, a bigger place.

encounters with friends+family included/involved/indulged in the following: trudy's x2, flying saucer, my sister raising the roof on stage and my shouting 'lookin' good!' in my loudest cheerleader voice, teaching rev about promises, margarita machines and party tents, dancing with my dad again, sex and the city party, finally going to graham's and actually enjoying it, finding out too many shocking and sad secrets, tamales x5000

i LOVED seeing my long lost friends and family and had a really great time in their company. but i have to be honest in saying that austin (the city) disappointed me this visit. it's my fault for not venturing to all new places. but the city seemed... a little less shiny. uh oh.

SAN FRANCISCO
this week has been an emotional one. my body and spirit are exhausted. but we're having fun, aren't we.

LOST finale [09 May 2008|08:42am]
you know what i think they should do for LOST? for the finale or at least towards the end as they’re mounting for this huge reveal… they should stage a REAL LIFE EVENT related to the storyline. so we’d all go to read our news and there would be some cover story about an incident that occurred in the ocean near the mystery island. i haven’t thought it all out yet and there would certainly be legal ramifications, but man, the convergence of mediums--bringing the show to literal life--would be groundbreaking. they’re already moving that needle anyway with the amount of tangent engagement they’re supplying outside of the hour-long show (e.g. the hanso commercials and the webisodes and mystery-revealing e-games). it’s their next, and final, step.

we go to dinner and out comes a trip to vegas and a possible australian getaway. it's like it's not enough that i'm flailing in water with plans, i have to have my head completely submerged and drowning. it's crazy, i'm a little crazy, and i'm absolutely loving my life right now.

last weekend we celebrated kate's last night of single-dom in a lavish affair of dares and drinks and dancing. it went famously. all the girls let loose and seemed to enjoy themselves (and others!). meanwhile, the boys were out smoking cigars and drinking scotch and at the end of the night my boyfriend goes missing. i finally find him, curled up with a blanket in the backseat of his car with no recollection of how he got there. so sexy, that one.

tonight there’s a secret date. and friday and saturday more celebration!

needless to say, i haven’t had a chance to think about my austin trip coming up next weekend. all i know is it will certainly involve a stuffed avocado and a plan for more walk than talk.

we got big sur-ved [23 Apr 2008|11:36am]
one thing is for certain: there’s no salad in camping.

this weekend, ten non-campers headed to big sur for camping, led by a team of two with a cooler the size of antarctica. five tents down “tent row,” most lined with meshing to crumble under the brisk winds of april. we fed meat-eaters and veggie-eaters and almost-vegans and people who like to kick washtub stew into campfires on accident. went hiking, team bouldering, and almost played a game of slosh kickball. people cooking up and hooking up and looking up at stars. our friends tecate, modelo, and little bud too, jon benet, makers mark, miss mimosa and the winos. guitar sock surprises and muchacho the super camp dog. we fell in love with rice krispie treats again and vowed to start a zine. and in the end it was concluded music mediums will converge and more people should play the ukulele.

so two things are for certain really: there’s no salad in camping and there should be plenty more of where that came from.

I read this in an article about what to think about before moving in with someone. It's an incredibly simple notion but I like how it's been put to words.

"Agree to discuss at least four options whenever styles conflict: MY WAY, YOUR WAY, OUR WAY, or BOTH WAYS. For instance, suppose your impoverished childhood taught you to reuse aluminum foil, while your mate's family just threw it away. If you and your partner are pinching pennies, you may decide that reusing is a fabulous idea (your way). If you become prosperous, you may decide to pitch your used foil (his way). If this feels wasteful, you could adopt a new custom by recycling (our way). Or you can simply agree to disagree, giving him permission to toss used bits of foil while you treasure them like the Dead Sea Scrolls (both ways)."

I think I'm historically a "both ways"-er peppered with "our way."
