Amidst scanning and shopping and planning, I really want to head off to Tinseltown to see Sukiyaki Western Django...apparently, it's got Quentin Tarantino narrating bits of it, Japanese actors trying very hard to speak English, and a take on Yojimbo (aka Fistful of Dollars) that's a cross between Wanted, the Matrix and Zatoichi. You have samurais cutting bullets in mid-air with their swords...how can you go wrong with that?

I have been nominated for a Lucie Award for Discovery of the Year as the overall winner in the People category. Claire Martin (she's the one on the right as we picnic on the side of the road while driving through the Napa Valley) is also up for a Lucie Award for Deeper Perspective with her brilliant work on the Vancouver Downtown Eastside. She also placed in several other subcategories. The chances of one of us placing is very very small. The chances of both of us being up for two of the three available statues are approaching lottery probabilities. This year was huge, there were almost 23,000 entries from 124 countries. We will both be planning a trip from the Salton Sea to New York this October to attend the ceremonies. Descriptive text edited by Jhayne Holmes.
You can view the images to my entries here: 2008 lucie awards
Just search for "lung liu" and it will take you directly to them. I am still flabbergasted that I didn't place in the Sports category.

Spent a little bit of time with Tasha earlier this evening - she's the last of my friends to leave and then soon, I'll leave.
( yeah, she's pretty damn awesome )
I'll start heading for San Francisco on the 15th of September to see Alisa, Leah, Sarah, possibly Turtle and Tank if they're available - then to leave for the Salton Sea a few days later.
Then I'll see Claire, whom I miss dearly, and Angel and Venus will be flying down in early October. People will come and go to join our little collective...photographers, musicians, writers, filmmakers..artists all. We'll be exploring the desert sea and creating masterpieces.
Around mid-October, Venus will be joining me for a trip through the Deep South, then North to New York for a couple of days around the 20th where she'll stay with Stephanie and I'll continue on to Montreal to see good friends again and possibly pick up one to go cross the continent back to the Salton Sea. This is the great North American Road Trip that I had dreamed of undergoing since two years ago and now it's happening.
This will be the most amazing trip that I will be going on to this date, with great friends accompanying me every step of the way.
I love you all, and I will tell you so.
EDIT: I am excited about this group of people that will converge on the Salton Sea. It's good food that we cook ourselves at night and campfires and wine. It's music and long talks about life beneath a sky so thick with stars they look like smudges of white painted across the sky. And it's about discussions of art and how it has changed and affected our lives, and it's about photography and everything else that moves us.
EDIT #2: For reasons that will become very obvious in a couple of days, Claire will also be joining Venus and me to New York in mid-October. This is going to be beyond great - all other road trips I will ever take will pale in comparison to this one.

A few months ago, I played tour guide to a Japanese exchange student and long story short, she ended up handing me a $40 gift card for HMV. Any must have CD's I need to buy? Any suggestions? Been listening to Cold Play recently and rather love the sound. The Teaches of Peaches was also a favourite, though it's quite a different sound.

Melo has come and gone and I miss her a little already. Right now I'm finishing up some obligations and preparing for the next stage of my adventures - it'll be a doozy. Natasha, my other favourite girl from Montreal is here and I've been trying to see her as much as I can, but it's not enough. There's just too many places to show her and not enough time. I miss her, too.

Melo and I at Whytecliff Park. Tomorrow, lounging by a mountain lake between Squamish and Whistler, then dinner at the summer night market, then possibly a party.

Zombie Walk 2008
Now for something fun. Zombies attack...in 3D! You'll have to cross your eyes so that the two images coalesce and make sure your head is level or it won't come together properly...maybe a little hard for those who haven't done it before, but well worth the effort. Images behind the cut:

Spent this afternoon with Brett and Shira - just driving places, hanging out and taking pictures. This was the first time I've actually met Shira (friend of a friend who called me when we were in want of someone to photograph). These images by Brett - I did take some film, but they won't be seen for awhile as I gear up for a couple of friends who will be in town shortly.

Someone I've met very very briefly sent me an email and mentioned the word heartbreak and I sort of understand a little about what that is. As I pass from place to place I develop very short and intense relationships...connections that last days or sometimes hours. Little heartbreaks everytime I go and other times this sense of desiring something that can never be fullfilled.
I have been saving a '96 bottle of Dom Perignon (arguably the best vintage in recent decades) for something special, but everytime something great happens and it's time to celebrate, I always wait for something bigger and better to happen. I think I'm going to drink it this year.
Oh yes...before the make-up and fake blood goes on for zombie walk:

Before my trip to Vietnam the end of this year, I'll be spending about 10 weeks on a road trip down to Southern California. The plan is simply to drive down mid-September to the SF Bay Area and spend a few days there, then drive down to the Salton Sea. Will be doing a combination of camping at State Parks and Slab City as well as Bombay Beach...
...the latter half of October will be spent exploring the Deep South - so a road trip within a road trip. I should be back in Vancouver early December. The Salton Sea has always been my favourite camping destination and there will be a load of friends either camping with me for an extended period of time or visiting.
One problem I have yet to solve satisfactorily is toilets. There will be certain spots where no public facilities are available (ie. Slab City) and I need a simple solution. Thought about digging my own latrines, but waste does not decompose quickly in a desert environment so I'm looking into portable solutions such as the PETT which looks promising if slightly expensive. Anyone have any experience with this? I'll entertain any and all suggestions, especially those who have real world experience desert camping.
Anyways...planning on seeing regular friends Leah and Alisa, but if anyone else wants to get together for tea in the SF area, let me know.

I won Second Place in the Berenice Abbott Prize for an Emerging Photographer. Coming so close is almost more disappointing than not placing at all, but I've no doubt that the winner deserves it and this is an extremely competitive international competition.
I think I'm going to go out and photograph some more today...

How are we ever going to be able to top China's opening ceremony here in Vancouver in two years time?
I promised Melo I'd find a way to get her here last week of August and I made it happen. She's a very bad influence on me so I'll probably be partying a lot.
Also, swimming has increased my cardio but not my leg muscles...went for a run last night for about 30 minutes and although I could have kept going heart-wise, my quadriceps were threatening to peel off my femur. I didn't think I was going to be able to walk today, but I managed to limp around okay.
