FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Douglas, AZ -- What do the national recognition of Banned Books Week, the Friends of the Douglas Public Library, and the Cochise County Fair have in common? These various community elements will come together at the 2008 Cochise County Fair with the Friday, September 26, and Saturday, September 27, performances of juggler James Reid, Juggler Extraordinaire.
Reid will present his nationally renowned juggling skills in two performances on Friday, and one on Saturday. Following the performances, he will distribute bookmarks promoting awareness of Banned Books Week 2008, which begins on Saturday, September 27.
Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read is observed during the last week of September each year. Observed since 1982, the annual event reminds Americans not to take this precious democratic freedom for granted.
Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to choose or the freedom to express one’s opinion even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular and stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them. After all, intellectual freedom can exist only where these two essential conditions are met.
James Reid, Juggler Extraordinaire has been delighting audiences since he was just eight years old. Only six months after learning how to juggle in Tempe, Arizona, he began his performing career. Now, twenty-six years later, James has traveled throughout Arizona and the rest of the U.S. performing and teaching with Juggling, Yo-Yo, Diabolo (Chinese Yo-Yo) and more. James has performed for thousands at festivals like Tempe Festival of the Arts and Glendale Glitters and wowed audiences in venues like Gammage Auditorium, Chandler Center for the Arts, The University Theatre at Yale, and so many more. James currently resides in Phoenix and performs throughout the country. Now James brings his unique fun to the Cochise County Fair. Current favorites in his show include juggling while eating an apple and spinning a hula-hoop, bowling ball juggling, the sports spectacular, and fire juggling!
Friends of the Douglas Public Library President, Maryelizabeth Hart, said, “We were delighted by the synchronicity of the timing. We had an opportunity to help expand the Cochise County Fair’s entertainment line-up, by bringing James Reid back to Douglas following his very well received performance as part of the Douglas Library's Children's Summer Reading Program. And we had a great opportunity to promote one of our nation’s most important freedoms, intellectual freedom, as Banned Book Week begins.”
City Librarian Victoria Yarbrough commented: “Many people do not realize that such practices -- banning books -- still happen today in many libraries and communities around the country. It is so important not to take our freedoms and rights for granted. Please come into the library to view (and check out!) our display of often-challenged and banned books!”
Celebrate your freedom to read at your local bookstore or library!
