15:51: Non-negotiable: SMC players please read
For the third time now I'm finding that members of Sunday Music Club are setting their own dates and themes and announcing them to me after the fact. I'm going to ask one more time that SMC members refrain from doing that and calling the result Sunday Music Club and then inviting all of the same people. That's a pretty shitty thing to do to me and I'm taking it personally. I've been nice about it so far but some people are taking advantage of my lax leadership style to serve their own ends. Now I've had it with this shit and it's going to stop one way or another.
SMC was never a democratic organization. I was not elected - I did the work and people came. It's a benign dictatorship and in my view it needs to stay that way in the interest of getting the work done. Too many cooks spoil the broth. I don't think people realize what's involved in conducting a successful meeting and I'm certain that you don't want to go through all the effort I do.
The themes for SMC are not arbitrary. There will never be a "seven favorite death metal songs" day in my club. Themes are carefully chosen to expose the players to a wide variety of songs, artists and genres. They are intended to stimulate thought and discussion, not only to be easy to pick songs for. The livejournal posts are each branded to make them easier to spot on your friends list and the dates are carefully chosen weeks in advance so that as many people as possible can participate. I supply a quality sound system and I use good equipment to record the results. I carefully transcribe the tracklist which involves looking up anything I can't read (and making a special effort *not* to credit the player with the artist's song) and I edit the the four and a half hour sound file so everyone will sound good and so the volume doesn't fluctuate wildly while you're listening to it. I estimate I spend between one and three hours before and after each SMC to make it happen and to deliver the goods.
I can't control what you do, but if attendance starts to wane because the group has a schism then I will wonder why I'm spending so much time on it and SMC as we currently know it will cease. If you really think you can do better, then fucking do it. If you invite me I will come to your event and be happy that I no longer have to invest my own valuable time in promotion, planning and technical ops.
If you like SMC as it is, then don't fuck with it. I'm asking you nicely - just wait until we can organize a real SMC event or else differentiate yourself signficantly from the event that I've built up. Don't fucking hijack the club. If you don't think it needs a leader then start your own club and throw it to the wind. If you want to make suggestions to improve the club, then I invite your comments - I listen and I do care about your opinions, but at the end of the day someone has to make the executive decisions and that will be me.
Thanks,
Self-declared leader of SMC
