Gratitude [for Bradley, vanquisher of clowns]
Alan is certain that, except in very specific instances (those concerning Denny), gratitude serves no purpose but to make him feel uncomfortable. Gratitude in itself always seems an inadequate reward for any act eliciting it and so Alan’s left with the restless feeling of needing to do something. As though he’s allowing some potential to go to waste.

“In its way, this is just as problematic as sitting there in court and…well, no point in dwelling. Not that I don’t appreciate his help—and therein lies the problem—but the idea of spending any period of time in Brad Chase’s debt…”

“I’m not listening,” his assistant informs him, voice as matter-of-fact as her intermittent tapping of keys. She had not been exaggerating when she informed him of her typing skills.

“And to think, all this time I could’ve been discussing your,”—Alan pauses to pluck a piece of lint from his sleeve—“outfit.”

“Now you have my attention,” she says, shoving her chair back from the desk. “So you know, when I threatened to write you up, I didn’t mean it literally. I already have the paperwork filled out. All it takes is a signature.”

Alan studies her for some brief period of time falling between “a moment” and “sexual harassment,” slight frown creasing his features. Finally, he says, “You’re thorough. I like that.” Before she can reply (but after she opens her mouth to do so, as it’s a rather nice expression) he continues, “I’ll be out of the office for an hour or two, Melissa, so please take the opportunity to bask in your freedom from the oppression of the male gaze.”

As she watches him set off toward Brad’s office, she mutters under her breath, “I knew there was something going on between the two of you.”

Alan raps smartly on the door to Brad’s office, unsure whether he wants to be interrupting anything or not, but pleased to have formulated a plan to dispense with the gratitude once and for all.

"I know". Bradley chuckled into the phone. "Forty-four and afraid of clowns." Smith, his Navy Seal buddy, questioned: "Clones?" Brad heard a rap. "Hold on a sec. Enter". Alan. Brad harbored an unfamiliar twinge for an instant, then discarded it like Judge Cooper discarded Garrett.

"Whatdayawant?"

"Brad," Alan greets with a nod, still feeling some residual vulnerability in the other man's presence. Hopefully that'll be banished along with the gratitude.

He steps into the office, lingering near the still-ajar door. "I'd like a word."

A word or a thousand, though Brad should know that already.

"Indomitable." Brad ended his call, studied Alan and pursed his lips. He appeared unsettled, hunched, diminished - an impression Brad recognized during the Zozo case. Unconsciously, Brad's dominance seemed to fill in the vacuum. He stood and motioned to the couch. "You did good, Alan."

Alan shut the door with exacting care and, ignoring the invitation to sit, moved to stand before Brad's desk. "Curious as it may sound, I didn't come here in search of validation." Not that it hadn't been nice, if a touch condescending.

"I realize--you've made it abundantly clear--that you don't approve of my legal ethics or my politics or even my continued existence, but in spite of all that..." Alan paused. "In spite of all that, you offered me guidance and support at a time when I did need it, and...your actions were a great tribute to your abilities as a leader."

He took a breath; let it out as a sigh. When he spoke again it was in more whimsical tones. "In light of this, I feel obliged to present you with some small token of my appreciation. A hooker was the obvious choice, given the dismal state of your personal life, but then I got to thinking that since you'd aided me in overcoming a...phobia of mine, perhaps I ought to repay you in kind. The question, then, is what are you afraid of?"

Alan smiled, bright and genuine. "The answer is simple: being seen with me in public." Picking up his briefcase, he strode to the door before turning to look at Brad. "Are you coming?"

Alan's initial regard caused Brad to move one step back, as if the soft-spoken tribute had a physical force. He camouflaged his imbalance by walking around the far side of his desk, a marine in motion. Nonetheless, he anchored those words inside for later consideration. As much as he disapproved at how Alan practiced law - and teamwork - a nod from Alan was...

He discarded validating as soon as he heard the breathy way Alan said hooker.

"I do not." He clutched the corner of his desk for support. He considered shoving Alan, except that would require he approach him. Best to expand on the schoolyard denial. "I'm not afraid of you." Well done, Brad.

Alan halted. He'd expected Brad to either accompany him unquestioningly or flat-out refuse. This uncomfortable shifting from foot to foot, the unwillingness to venture from his desk, was unexpected. It would have been amusing, too, if Alan's own conduct during the trial hadn't been so fresh in his mind and so embarrassingly similar.

"Good," he said, smiling encouragingly. "I trust you're likewise unafraid of my driving."

What finally made him approach was not curiosity. That's too pedestrian and implies interest. Brad was an investigator. Labeling it research, he shoved his hands in his pockets and shrugged.

"Will this involve cuffs and a ransom note?"

"Well, that wasn't the plan, but if you give me time to run to my desk I can rummage up one of the two," Alan offered brightly.

"Brad, this is a gesture of goodwill. Is there a reason it's causing you more anguish than my various illicit activities?"

Anguish was not a good word to throw at Brad. He'd seen men cut in half by mines. Alan was just a guy with a penchant for bright ties. Brad contemplated if he's somehow gone soft after twelve years as a litigator with good grooming.

He hated Alan to see his hand, so he employed his poker face.

"Not a problem. Let's roll."

Brad strode purposefully past him, keeping his eyes on Alan's unnerving smile, his own furrow in place. He didn't halt until he got to the elevator, then turned. Several paralegals and associates had stopped, staring at the twosome.

"I think they're expecting a rematch." He felt a sympathy twitch in the middle of his back where Sugar Ray Schmidt thwonked him.

Brad kept his eyes on the shops passing by his window. He lowered his voice, speaking deliberately. "I comply with the grooming standards instilled a long time ago. There's nothing wrong with my hair." He turned slightly, just so the side mirror was in view. "Got that, shaggy?"

Alan had now begun to actively scan their surroundings. He wasn't terribly familiar with their destination, but the rows of quaint shops lining the street seemed a step in the right direction.

"A long time ago," he agreed. "Anywhere from the 1950s to mid-cretaceous."

"Watch it, pops." The cadence of their bickering was the only thing familiar to Brad during this strange afternoon. He sifted again - how long had they been driving? - and thought about the work waiting for him back at the office. *vaguely* "Did Judge Hingham ever - " He glanced quickly at the imperialistic profile and decided to abide by the imposed code of silence. "Forget it."

"Did Judge Hingham ever what?" Alan asked neutrally.

"Ah." After a quick glance this way and that, he swiveled the car around in a U turn and pulled into a spot on the side of the street. "Here we are. I had to be sure we weren't being followed."

In front of them was an antiques shop, a florist, and a pet store.

Brad grasped the door handle and rolled his eyes at Alan's illegal maneuver. "Blinkers. Solid yellow lines. Civil infraction." Alan was ignoring him, slightly bent and peering up at the signage. "Followed?" Brad glanced in the back seat, half expecting to see a clown face mask and one of Denny's pistols. He turned his attention to the shops - the pet store was intriguing - and chuckled through his words: "Are we here to find you a date?"

"If that had been the objective," Alan said, checking for incoming traffic and then getting out of the car, "I'd have stopped at the corner of--oh." He waited for Brad to disembark from the vehicle and smirked over the roof at him. "You were making a joke. Next time you'll want to warn me in advance."

Brad leveled a look at his smug abductor.

Truth be told, Brad hated being in the dark about Alan's mission. He hated being toyed with - sure that's exactly why Alan did it. The dig got to him. He slammed the door and purposefully strode down the sidewalk, ignoring the likely destinations. If Alan had something in mind, it was past time to reveal it.

Always one to have his priorities in order (not necessarily the most logical order, but order nonetheless), Alan made sure to lock the car before hurrying to catch up with Brad. It wasn't as though the other man had anywhere to go--he needed Alan for the ride back--but the sudden display of resentment had caught Alan off-guard. He'd expected reluctance at leaving the office, certainly at getting into the car, but...

All right. He hadn't really expected to get this far. "May I ask where we're going?" Alan said, finally catching up with him.

"Brace yourself. You're beginning to sound like me."

Brad made a quick turn into the second Starbucks he passed on the block, Alan narrowly missing his shoulder. The insanely young counter staff chirped a welcome, Brad shutting down the very idea of small talk by barking 'Black coffee'.

Short of ignoring the man who had followed him in, Brad fell back on his most defining trait: being direct. "I don't like this. Tell me what we're doing here. Now."

Alan nodded distractedly and tilted his head back to survey the menu before ordering a decaf grande two pump cinnamon, two pump almond soy latte with a dollop of whipped cream on top. "I don't actually drink it," he said to Brad, "I just like ordering something that necessitates filling in all the boxes on the side of the cup."

He paid, tossing his change into the tip jar, then circled around to the counter where he was to pick up his drink. "As for what we're doing here, you're the one who practically hauled me inside. You tell me."

For maximum effect, he needed a beverage to sip nonchalantly. Perhaps he should've ordered something he intended to drink.

"I'm here because it's too early for alcohol." Brad was sure an Off Shore Shark Bite would be waiting for him at the 21st Amendment precisely at 6. He was halfway through his coffee, watching Shore examine the side of his cup, remove the lid and poke delicately at the flecked foam. "Careful, there, Wolfgang. That stuff'll kill you."

Fortified with hot caffeine and the bonus of Alan following him, Brad hazarded a half-grin - just the left side of his mouth framed with a dimple.

"Listen. I wanna tell you something. I'm gonna be straight with you. The reason I challenged you to stand and deliver is because that thing you had? It's a weakness. I don't like weakness." Brad paused for Alan's condescending comeback, but he was simply listening. "I appreciate your need to balance the scales, but you don't have to do anything. You told me you wanted to repay in kind. Then do this."

Brad stopped. Exposing his own weakness to someone likely to publish it in the firms newsletter was tantamount to giving his effectiveness with the other associates a firm shove off the top of the John Hancock Tower. He may be asking the impossible.

"Tell me what you honestly think my weakness is - and how I should overcome it. Diplomatically, Alan."

I can only wonder if Alan told Brad the truth. Brad is a nice guy, but his problems stem more from personal relationships than what he does in the courtroom.

By the way Alan, you can try on MY legal briefs anytime you wish. That should stop you thinking about clowns.

ooc (out of character, if I may):

Alan wasn't so much answering Brad's question as taking issue with it. Asking someone--especially someone like Alan, who, while perceptive, doesn't know Brad very well and hasn't expressed any desire to know him--to pin down your single greatest weakness is just so simplistic. Sure, if you're talking about something like tennis it's easy enough to say, "okay, my problem is my backhand" but when you're discussing life in general...Brad's lucky Alan didn't laugh at him outright. However, the fact that Brad even asked the question does say something about his mode of thought, which is certainly problematic. You can't expect to get the right answers if you go around asking the wrong questions. So I don't see truth playing into it so much--it's not really a question that can be answered. It certainly isn't one Alan's qualified to answer.

And duly noted. Alan appreciates the thought.
