Shadows on the Wall: How-To
[Scene: B-ko and C-ko stand behind a table which is littered with a strange collection of craft supplies, beakers, a bubbling distiller, books, a tea set, photo albums, fencing equipment, masks, a clock, a license plate, piles of paper, and a vase of roses. Gir putters about under the table.]
C-ko: Welcome, welcome, one and all, to Creating Your Own Ohtori In Ten Easy Steps! And today's lesson is: how to make your own Rose Bride!
[Applause from B-ko and C-ko.]
C-ko: It's a very simple process, really. First, you must start with an ordinary girl. Any ordinary girl will do! How about you? [Said to B-ko.]
B-ko: Um, well... I'd love to help, but... I'm not an ordinary girl any more. I'm, you know, bad.
Gir: Bad is fun! I like being bad!
B-ko: We know that, Gir.
Gir: I'm gonna sing the doom song now!
B-ko: [Hastily scoops Gir up and carts him offstage under her arm.]
Gir: Doom doom doom doomity dooooooom doom... [fades.]
C-ko: Well, that's a disappointment! Do we have any volunteers from the audience? How about you? [Leaps forward and pulls A-ko onto the shadowscreen by the arm.]
A-ko: Um, I...
C-ko: I'm sure you'll do just fine! You're an ordinary girl, aren't you?
A-ko: Of course I am!
C-ko: Well, there's nothing to be afraid of, the process is guaranteed faux painless. And there's nothing like being a Rose Bride to guarantee popularity!
A-ko: Well... all right... That sounds good. I'd like to be popular.
C-ko: Excellent! Well, the first step is the poisoned apple. [Offers apple to A-ko.]
A-ko: Poisoned? I don't want to eat it if it's poisoned!
C-ko: [Laughs] That's just what it's called, it won't actually kill you.
A-ko: It won't? [Takes the apple] Okay. [Takes a bite] It's too sweet. And bitter. And-- [Puts a hand to her throat.]
C-ko: And the next step is the glass slipper, or the mermaid's shoes.
A-ko: [Tries to say something, but can't.]
C-ko: Hold out your foot for me?
A-ko: [Rather helplessly holds out her foot.]
C-ko: The shoes are a little small, but you'll get used to that. [As she shoves them on A-ko's feet, A-ko's outfit changes to the Rose Bride dress.]
A-ko: [Looks down at herself, then folds her hands in front, demurely.]
C-ko: The last step in making a Rose Bride is the most crucial. The Rose Bride must willingly give over her self, make her soul empty to provide a space for the Sword of Dios to come through. When this happens you know that you have a willing target, a shield to stand between you and the million swords that thirst for the blood of all princes. The easiest way to do this is to cut out her heart.
A-ko: [Looks at C-ko, deeply alarmed.]
C-ko: Of course, you must do this without spilling a drop of blood. [Picks up the Sword of Dios from the clutter on the table and advances on A-ko.]
A-ko: [Backs away.]
C-ko: [Coaxingly, almost in Akio's tones] Don't be afraid. It's necessary. And then everyone will think that you are the most beautiful thing ever.
A-ko: [Hesitates in her movement, looking at C-ko, one hand pressed to her mouth.]
C-ko: Yes, beautiful. Everyone will want you. Everyone will admire you. You will be the focus of all desire.
A-ko: [Pauses, caught by this description.]
C-ko: [Leaps forward, catches A-ko around the waist, and brings the sword down.]
[A black curtain descends.]
