Shadows on the Wall: Roommates
[Scene: a dorm room at Ohtori. A-ko and B-ko are each sitting and doing homework at desks on opposite sides of the room, with their backs to each other.]
A-ko: [Without turning around] I got an A on my essay on the United States that was handed back today. I noticed you weren't in class. Where were you?
B-ko: [Looking down at her book] Out.
A-ko: We did gymnastics in P.E! I really like gymnastics. The coach told me that I would be a shoo-in if I tried out for the team. I apparently have natural talent!
B-ko: [Writing something in her notebook.] Oh.
A-ko: [Turning around in her chair] Some of the other girls and I are starting a club! We've decided to be a fan club, but we're still deciding whose fans to be. Some of us want to be the fan club of the Student Council President, and some of us want to be the fans of the Vice President. We're going to vote on it at our next meeting!
B-ko: Um-hmm.
A-ko: I'm voting for the Student Council President, myself.
B-ko: [Reading again] How... banal.
A-ko: That's not very polite!
B-ko: I know that. Who said that I have to be polite?
A-ko: I thought we were friends!
B-ko: [Stands up] Are we?
A-ko: I have tried so hard to be nice! I tell you all about my day and you haven't a single nice thing to say!
B-ko: [Turns around] I thought friends talked about things together, and took an interest in one another, instead of just telling news and expecting praise.
A-ko: And I thought friends were appreciative!
B-ko: Perhaps we were both wrong.
A-ko: [Stands up] What do you mean? About what?
B-ko: [Hands A-ko a rose] Who our real friends are. I'll see you in the morning. [She leaves the room.]
A-ko: A duel? But why? Just because she doesn't like the Student Council President?
[Scene change. In the lobby of the dorm, B-ko runs into C-ko.]
C-ko: Where are you going? It's after curfew, you know.
B-ko: Oh, I never pay attention to that anymore. I'm going out, to meet a... friend.
C-ko: I see. Well, be careful.
B-ko: Careful? Ha. Who needs that? [Swings jauntily out.]
C-ko: Because I am not sure that he is anyone's friend.
[Outside, the sound of a car motor diminishes in the distance.] ]
