Shadows on the Wall: In Which a Distinct Lack of Snow Is Noted
[Scene: The UFO swings onscreen, narrowly misses the tower, and settles on a school rooftop. Track 11 ("Alien Girl") starts to play as the scene switches to the school courtyard. A-ko, B-ko, and C-ko stand around carrying suitcases. Gir has a large pile of boxes, and several strings of beads, plastic leis, and other assorted gimcracks around his neck.]
B-ko: Well, here we are. Let's go and get settled, shall we?
C-ko: I'm heading off to my place, and then I'm going dancing. Don't wait up!
Gir: Ooooh, dancing! [Runs after C-ko; a small stuffed duck bounces in his wake.]
A-ko: I'm going to drop off this library book first.
[In front of the library.]
B-ko: That's odd, it's the middle of the day, but...
A-ko: [Rattles the door handle of the library] Why is it locked?!?!?
B-ko: Looks like it's closed.
A-ko: It's not a weekend! [Peers through the glass window of the door, shading her eyes.]
B-ko: [Examines the sign] This says that the library is closed until further notice except to the Student Council and people they authorize.
A-ko: How am I supposed to return this, then??!?! [Holds up her library book.]
B-ko: Book drop? [They peer in all directions.]
A-ko: Here it is! [Looking closer] It's... it's nailed shut.
B-ko: [Reading from the notice] "Library patrons must fill out a form from the Student Council and face charges if they wish to return any overdue materials."
A-ko: It's not overdue yet!
B-ko: I'm not sure that matters to them.
A-ko: I don't understand this. What happened to the idea of using a library for library things?
B-ko: And where are all the librarians?
A-ko: Ou sont les neiges d'antan?
[A-ko and B-ko stand with suitcases in front of a Victorian-looking building that looks suspiciously like the one that Utena stayed in during her first year.]
B-ko: Where's our room?
A-ko: Room? Room? Where's our dorm? It used to be right here!
B-ko: Did they tear it down?
A-ko: Awfully fast work for an academic budget.
B-ko: And where are they planning to house people? This building looks pretty empty. Where are the students? Did they just turn the students out into the streets?
A-ko: Ou sont les neiges d'antan?
[In front of a building with tall, narrow windows.]
C-ko: You guys aren't going to believe this--
B-ko: Is your lab missing?
C-ko: Missing?!? No, they're turned it into a morgue, of all things. I hope they forget to feed the carnivorous plants.
A-ko: A morgue? But your lab is in--
C-ko: The science building, I know. But all the classrooms are gone. It's all empty now, and there's a supply of coffins and stuff.
A-ko: Coffins?
C-ko: Yep.
B-ko: But what about the people who taught in that building? If it's empty, where did all the teachers go?
A-ko: Ou sont les neiges d'antan?
[A-ko, B-ko, and C-ko sit in an row on the edge of a stone bench. The wall behind them has a rose motif.]
C-ko: [Glumly] I never even got to use the pit of flames I built in the sub-basement.
B-ko: Everything's vanishing. All the stuff we used to have. It feels wrong.
A-ko: It's like the walls are pressing in on us.
C-ko: We could just get in the UFO and go.
[All three look up at the rooftop where, presumably, the UFO is parked.]
B-ko: No, I want to know why this is happening.
C-ko: It's weird, but it feels like this has all happened before.
A-ko: [Slowly] Yes... yes, it does, doesn't it?
[Then she recites, as though trying to remember]
Prince, n'enquerez de sepmaine
Ou elles sont, ne de cest an,
Qu'a ce reffrain ne vous remaine:
Mais ou sont les neiges d'antan?
B-ko: Snow melted does not return, but it does seem as though we might be able to get the library re-opened.
C-ko: After all, we're got Gir on our side.
A-ko: I wonder who they're got on their side?
