Shadows on the Wall: Masks
[A-ko, B-ko, and C-ko are all dressed in elaborate ballgowns with domino masks on sticks. A treacly waltz plays in the background.]
A-ko: What a glorious masquerade!
B-ko and C-ko: [in chorus] True! True!
B-ko: Why, I've never seen so many costumes!
C-ko: And so very alike!
A-ko: Why, you can't tell one person from another!
All together: And isn't that the definition of a good party?
[In the background, the shadow of an enormous grandfather clock appears, with the rose sigil traced on its face. Solemnly, it booms twelve times.]
A-ko: Midnight! Time for the unmasking!
B-ko: [removing mask] I'm really... An Edward Gorey character! [Leans slinkily against a giant urn and presses the back of one hand to her forehead.] Oh, the horror of Thursdays!
A-ko: [removing mask] And I'm really... A wicked witch! [Pulls a hood up over her head and glares out from underneath it.]
C-ko: [removing mask] And I'm really... An alien from outer space! [Antennae appear on her head.]
Gir: And I'm really a belly dancer! [Dances madly around the three of them, waving a scarf, and then his head explodes. All three Shadowgirls stare sadly at his remains.]
C-ko: [shakes head] I don't think even tacos will fix that. [Tucks Gir under one arm.]
A-ko: But wait! I'm really [removes mask] a beautiful princess! [A crown appears on her head.]
B-ko: I'm really [removes mask] a famous idol singer! [Produces a microphone and sings.] Only you...
C-ko: [hastily removing mask] I'm really a fantastically popular student! I even have a fan club! [Shadowy people mob her for an autograph.]
A-ko: I'm a brave prince!
B-ko: I'm a grim samurai!
C-ko: I'm a monkey!
[The other two stare at C-ko, who scratches herself and knuckles happily out of the ballroom, dragging Gir (bouncing) on the floor behind her.]
A-ko: She's... weird.
B-ko: Yeah. [Looks at the knee-high pile of masks surrounding them.]
A-ko: So, which are you, really?
B-ko: Oh, that depends. Kashira, kashira!
A-ko: [whispering] Which am I?
Akio's Voice, offstage: That's the most relevant question in the world.
B-ko and A-ko together: Gozanji kashira!!
